Numerical considerations in spectral multidomain methods for BiGlobal instability analysis of open cavity configurations

    Get PDF
A novel approach for the solution of the viscous incompresible and/or compressible BiGlobal eigenvalue problems (EVP) in complex open cavity domains is discussed. The algorithm is based on spectral multidomain spatial discretization, decomposing space into rectangular subdomains which are resolved by spectral collocation based on Chebyshev polynomials. The eigenvalue problem is solved by Krylov subspace iteration. Here particular emphasis is placed on aspects of the parallel developments that have been necessary, on account of the high computing demands placed on the solver, as ever more complex “T-store” configurations are addressed

Pressure Bifurcation Phenomenon on Supersonic Blowing Trailing Edges

Turbine blades operating in transonic-supersonic regime develop a complex shock wave system at the trailing edge, a phenomenon that leads to unfavorable pressure perturbations downstream and can interact with other turbine stages. Understanding the fluid behavior of the area adjacent to the trailing edge is essential in order to determine the parameters that have influence on these pressure fluctuations. Colder flow, bled from the high-pressure compressor, is often purged at the trailing edge to cool the thin blade edges, affecting the flow behavior and modulating the intensity and angle of the shock waves system. However, this purge flow can sometimes generate non-symmetrical configurations due to a pressure difference that is provoked by the injected flow. In this work, a combination of RANS simulations and global stability analysis is employed to explain the physical reasons of this flow bifurcation. Analyzing the features that naturally appear in the flow and become dominant for some value of the parameters involved in the problem, an anti-symmetrical global mode, related to the sudden geometrical expansion of the trailing edge slot, is identified as the main mechanism that forces the changes in the flow topology.Comment: Submitted to AIAA Journa

Application of electrodialysis for the treatment of almond industry wastewater

    Get PDF
In this work, electrodialysis has been proved to be a suitable technique for decreasing the conductivity of a real wastewater from an almond industry, which has been previously treated by electrocoagulation (EC) and electrooxidation (EO). A seven-cell electrodialyzer, with total active membrane area of 1400 cm2, was employed and several parameters, as the limiting current density, were determined. A method for measuring voltage across the membranes was developed, in order to control membrane fouling. The method consisted of capillaries inserted into the solution compartments and connected to a high impedance voltmeter. A study of the reuse of the concentrate solution was made, and it was stated that it can be concentrated 10 times. The treatment of the wastewater was performed at different voltages (7–16 V) to reach values of conductivity of the diluate of 0.5 mS cm−1. After that, the scaling up to a pre-industrial scale was performed by using a 70-cell electrodialyzer, with total active membrane area of 3.5 m2. The process was performed by applying voltages of 20–70 V and a final conductivity of the diluate of 0.5 mS cm−1 was achieved. The electric energy consumption was calculated in every case

Electrochemical treatment of wastewater from almond industry using DSA-type anodes: direct connection to a PV generator

Food industries such as almond industry generate large volumes of wastewater in their processes and common techniques are not always efficient for treating this kind of effluents. In this work, the feasibility of a treatment for pollutants removal of a real industrial wastewater by electrochemical oxidation s studied at laboratory scale and then scaled-up to pre-industrial scale. The first stage of the work was performed at laboratory scale, using a 63 cm2 cell, where different anodes (Ti/Pt, and DSA anodes (Ti/RuO2 and Ti/IrO2)) and the optimal experimental conditions (pH, current density, temperature and [Cl-]) were studied and established. By using a DSA-Cl2 anode (Ti/RuO2), pH 9, j = 50 mA cm-2, [Cl-] = 2000 mg L-1 and room temperature, chemical oxygen demand (COD) was removed up to 75% and results show that electrooxidation can remove organic pollutants. In the second stage the scaling-up of the process from laboratory to pre-industrial scale was performed, by using a 3300cm2 cell. The electrochemical reactor was finally powered by a photovoltaic generator directly connected, in order to operate by using a renewable energy and a COD elimination of 80% was achieved

Years of sunlight exposure and cataract: a case-control study in a Mediterranean population.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to investigate the relation between sunlight exposure and risk of cataract. METHODS: We carried out a frequency-matched case-control study of 343 cases and 334 controls attending an ophthalmology outpatient clinic at a primary health-care center in a small town near Valencia, Spain. All cases were diagnosed as having a cataract in at least one eye based on the Lens Opacification Classification system (LOCS II). Controls had no opacities in either eye. All cases and controls were interviewed for information on outdoor exposure, "usual" diet, history of severe episodes of diarrhea illness, life-style factors and medical and socio-demographic variables. Blood antioxidant vitamin levels were also analyzed. We used logistic regression models to estimate sex and age-adjusted odds ratios (ORs) by quintiles of years of occupational outdoor exposure, adjusting for potential confounders such as smoking, alcohol consumption, serum antioxidants and education. RESULTS: No association was found between years of outdoor exposure and risk of cataract. However, exploratory analyses suggested a positive association between years of outdoor exposure at younger ages and risk of nuclear cataract later in life. CONCLUSION: Our study does not support an association with cataract and sunlight exposure over adult life

Identification of dynamic parameters in vehicle suspension systems

    Get PDF
Abstract This work presents the identification of dynamic parameters in automotive vehicles. In order to develop the identification problem, a dynamic model is obtained for the front suspension of a race car. Two new dynamic models are developed, the first of which is based on the Singular Value Decomposition (SVD), while the second comprises two consecutive steps: elimination of less contributive parameters and application of a SVD method. Finally, both models are analyzed and validated by means of data cross-referencing for new trajectories other than those used during the identification process. The model obtained using the elimination reproduces the dynamic behavior with very good approximation even with the inclusion of errors, so it is presented as the most viable methodology for obtaining base parameters

The impact of location on housing prices: applying the Artificial Neural Network Model as an analytical tool.

The location of a residential property in a city directly affects its market price. Each location represents different values in variables such as accessibility, neighbourhood, traffic, socio-economic level and proximity to green areas, among others. In addition, that location has an influence on the choice and on the offer price of each residential property. The development of artificial intelligence, allows us to use alternative tools to the traditional methods of econometric modelling. This has led us to conduct a study of the residential property market in the city of Valencia (Spain). In this study, we will attempt to explain the aspects that determine the demand for housing and the behaviour of prices in the urban space. We used an artificial neutral network as a price forecasting tool, since this system shows a considerable improvement in the accuracy of ratings over traditional models. With the help of this system, we attempted to quantify the impact on residential property prices of issues such as accessibility, level of service standards of public utilities, quality of urban planning, environmental surroundings and other locational aspects.
