[English]:This volume contains the correspondence of Giuseppe De Blasiis (1832-1914), the first History professor of the Neapolitan University. In his leading role as a 19th century Italian Historiographer, he was responsible for the scientific structure of the Neapolitan Society of National History, of which he was a founding member and later president. His studies on Medieval History, without forgetting those he carried out on the modern age, as well as his vast knowledge of the documentary and bibliographical sources from Naples, made him a privileged spokesman for anyone who wanted to approach the history of southern continental Italy./ [Italiano]: In questo volume è ricostruito il carteggio di Giuseppe De Blasiis (1832-1914), primo professore di Storia dell’ateneo napoletano.
[English]: The Neapolitan Society of Homeland History was created in 1875 through the will of some Neapolitan politicians and scholars, who borrowed its structure from previously established historical societies. Like the other Italian institutions, the Neapolitan association was also primarily interested in the publication of sources, the defense of autonomy, and the attempt to reconcile the smaller and the larger nation. The objective was twofold: to reinforce the ties between the local people and the Savoy dynasty, and to underline, through historical memory, the local contribution made to the process of nation building. Through the biographical reconstruction of some members of the Neapolitan historical society, it is well understood that nothing that happened in the city took place far from the institution; from the control of public instruction to the protection of monuments, to the administration of charity organizations. Although there were already some prestigious cultural associations, the historical society knew how to create a wide network of relationships, thanks to the policy of open membership and a fairly accessible membership fee. The events which took place at this institution, reconstructed here from its founding to 1946, through previously unpublished documentary sources and a full bibliography, are thus useful for those who wish to learn about the cultural dynamics of southern continental Italy and the period following the Unification / [Italiano]: La SocietĂ Napoletana di Storia Patria fu creata nel 1875 per volontĂ di alcuni politici e studiosi napoletani, mutuando la sua struttura dalle societĂ storiche giĂ sorte.
Combination of Renin-Angiotensin System Polymorphisms Is Associated With Altered Renal Sodium Handling and Hypertension
Genes of the renin-angiotensin–aldosterone system (RAAS) are natural candidates for sodium homeostasis and blood pressure regulation. To investigate the effect of a combination of polymorphisms of RAAS genes on renal sodium handling and blood pressure, 918 participants to the Olivetti Heart Study were genotyped for the following polymorphisms: I/D of angiotensin converting enzyme (
ACE
), M235T of angiotensinogen (
AGT
), A1166C of angiotensin II type-1 receptor (
AT1R
), and C-344T of aldosterone synthase (
CYP11B2
). The segmental renal sodium handling was evaluated by the fractional excretions of exogenous lithium (FE-Li), uric acid (FE-UA), and sodium (FE-Na). Twenty-eight carriers of triple homozygosity for M (
AGT
), A (
AT1R
), and C (
CYP11B2
) in the presence of the D allele of
ACE
(DD/ID) showed lower FE-Li (20.0%±5.9% versus 25.0%±7.5%;
P
=0.004; mean±
s
D), FE-UA (6.3%±2.0% versus 8.2%±2.7%;
P
=0.001), and FE-Na (0.96%±0.41% versus 1.22%±0.61%;
P
=0.004) as compared with all other allelic combinations (n=890), independently from age and body mass, suggesting an enhanced rate of proximal tubular sodium reabsorption. The carriers of the MM, AA, CC, DD/ID combination showed a substantially higher probability of being hypertensive (OR: 3.4 [(99% CI: 1.1 to 10.1]), independently of age and body mass. This relatively rare combination of allelic variants of candidate genes of the RAAS is associated with a significant alteration in proximal renal sodium handling and with higher risk of hypertension, suggesting that a combination of polymorphic variants at different candidate loci may affect phenotypic expression even in the absence of detectable effects of each variant at any single locus

Maria Nallino (1908-1974) and the Birth of Arabic and Islamic studies at Ca’ Foscari
This essay, based on bibliographic and archival material, focuses on the academic figure Maria Nallino, a scholar whose voluminous body of work ranges from classicism to modernity with equal fluency and expertise. Daughter of the famous Orientalist Carlo Alfonso Nallino (1872-1938), whose work she gathered and actively promoted, her arrival at Ca’ Foscari (1962) inaugurated Arabic and Islamic studies in Venice
