    Evolution of Magnetism in Single-Crystal Honeycomb Iridates

    We report the successful synthesis of single-crystals of the layered iridate, (Na1−x_{1-x}Lix_{x})2_2IrO3_3, 0≤x≤0.90\leq x \leq 0.9, and a thorough study of its structural, magnetic, thermal and transport properties. The new compound allows a controlled interpolation between Na2_2IrO3_3 and Li2_2IrO3_3, while maintaing the novel quantum magnetism of the honeycomb Ir4+^{4+} planes. The measured phase diagram demonstrates a dramatic suppression of the N\'eel temperature, TNT_N, at intermediate xx suggesting that the magnetic order in Na2_2IrO3_3 and Li2_2IrO3_3 are distinct, and that at x≈0.7x\approx 0.7, the compound is close to a magnetically disordered phase that has been sought after in Na2_2IrO3_3 and Li2_2IrO3_3. By analyzing our magnetic data with a simple theoretical model we also show that the trigonal splitting, on the Ir4+^{4+} ions changes sign from Na2_2IrO3_3 and Li2_2IrO3_3, and the honeycomb iridates are in the strong spin-orbit coupling regime, controlled by \jeff=1/2 moments.Comment: updated version with more dat

    The influence of electric field on the microstructure of nc-Si:H films produced by RF magnetron sputtering

    Hydrogenated nanocrystalline silicon thin films were prepared by RF magnetron sputtering. Different bias fields (no bias–no ground, grounded and negative bias) were applied to the substrate. The effect of the ion bombardment on the structure, chemical composition and optical property were studied by Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Rutherford backscattering (RBS) and optical transmission spectroscopy. The deposition rate and the optical bandgap decrease as the bias voltage increases from 0 to -50 V. The structural characterization indicates that compressive stress is developed in plane and tensile stress is induced in the growth direction.     Evaluation of the curvature ductility ratio of a circular cross-section of concrete reinforced with GFRP bars

    The present study deals with the use of fiberglass reinforced polymer bars (GFRP) as a replacement for the common steel of a reinforced concrete circular pile, in order to avoid the corrosion of durability of reinforcing bars and thus improve them. The comparative analysis was carried out between a pile reinforced with GFRP and another with steel, where the ductility was evaluated by obtaining moment-curvature diagram. As a result, said idealized moment-curvature diagrams and ductility indices are presented, concluding the ductility of the section reinforced with GFRP in 20% more than that of steel

    Design of an Advanced Layered Composite for Energy Dissipation using a 3D-Lattice of Micro Compliant Mechanism

    This work introduces a new Advanced Layered Composite (ALC) design that redirects impact load through the action of a lattice of 3D printed micro-compliant mechanisms. The first layer directly comes in contact with the impacting body and its function is to prevent an intrusion of the impacting body and uniformly distribute the impact forces over a large area. This layer can be made from fiber woven composites imbibed in the polymer matrix or from metals. The third layer is to serve a purpose of establishing contact between the protective structure and body to be protected. It can be a cushioning material or a hard metal depending on the application. The second layer is a compliant buffer zone (CBZ) which is sandwiched between two other layers is responsible for the dampening of most of the impact energy. The compliant buffer zone, comprised by the lattice of micro-compliant mechanism, is designed using topology optimization to dynamically respond by distributing localized impact in the normal direction into a distributed load in the radial direction (perpendicular to the normal direction). The compliant buffer zone depicts a large radial deformation in the middle but not on the surface, which only moves in the normal direction. The effect is a significant reduction of the interfacial shear stress with two adjacent layered phases. A low interfacial shear stress translates into a reduced delamination. The ALC’s response to the impact is tested by using dynamic finite element analysis. The proposed ALC design is intended to be used for the design of protective devices such as helmets and crashworthy components in vehicle structures

    Broadband VLA Spectral Line Survey of a Sample of Ionized Jet Candidates

    The study of the interaction between ionized jets, molecular outflows and their environments is critical to understanding high-mass star formation, especially because jets and outflows are thought to be key in the transfer of angular momentum outwards from accretion disks. We report a low-spectral resolution VLA survey for hydrogen radio recombination lines, OH, NH3_3, and CH3_3OH lines toward a sample of 58 high-mass star forming regions that contain numerous ionized jet candidates. The observations are from a survey designed to detect radio continuum; the novel aspect of this work is to search for spectral lines in broadband VLA data (we provide the script developed in this work to facilitate exploration of other datasets). We report detection of 25 \,GHz CH3_3OH transitions toward ten sources; five of them also show NH3_3 emission. We found that most of the sources detected in CH3_3OH and NH3_3 have been classified as ionized jets or jet candidates and that the emission lines are coincident with, or very near (≲0.1\lesssim 0.1 pc) these sources, hence, these molecular lines could be used as probes of the environment near the launching site of jets/outflows. No radio recombination lines were detected, but we found that the RMS noise of stacked spectra decreases following the radiometer equation. Therefore, detecting radio recombination lines in a sample of brighter free-free continuum sources should be possible. This work demonstrates the potential of broadband VLA continuum observations as low-resolution spectral line scans.Comment: 38 pages, 19 figures.
