Influence of Annealing on the Optical and Scintillation Properties of CaWO Single Crystals
We investigate the influence of oxygen annealing on the room temperature
optical and scintillation properties of CaWO single crystals that are being
produced for direct Dark Matter search experiments. The applied annealing
procedure reduces the absorption coefficient at the peak position of the
scintillation spectrum ( nm) by a factor of and leads to an
even larger reduction of the scattering coefficient. Furthermore, the annealing
has no significant influence on the \emph{intrinsic} light yield. An additional
absorption occurring at nm suggests the formation of O hole
centers. Light-yield measurements at room temperature where one crystal surface
was mechanically roughened showed an increase of the \emph{measured} light
yield by and an improvement of the energy resolution at 59.5 keV by
for the annealed crystal. We ascribe this result to the reduction of
the absorption coefficient while the surface roughening is needed to compensate
for the also observed reduction of the scattering coefficient after annealing
Application of an Error Correction Model in Assessment and Forecasting of Energy Consumption in the European Union
In the following framework, efforts of building a model of energy consumption with regard to basic macroeconomic factors such as gross domestic product (GDP), consumer price index (CPI), and demographic variables, have been undertaken. Above-mentioned model, thanks to an error correction mechanism enables to indicate short- and long-term relations between analyzed variables.The spatial and time sample which was chosen for the research, includes data from 1980 – 2005 from the European Union countries. The application of such cross sample and decomposition of absolute term, enables to indicate certain general regularities in analyzed phenomenon, and also typical of particular countries. From empirical point of view, the created model can be used in preparation of simulations and forecasts with planned energy consumption on the national and international level.Предпринята попытка построения модели потребления энергии с учетом макроэкономических факторов, таких как ВВП, индекс цен потребителя, и демографических данных. Предлагаемая модель позволяет с помощью механизма коррекции ошибок определить кратко- и долгосрочные отношения между анализируемыми переменными. Использована пространственно-временная выборка данных с 1980 по 2005 г. по странам Европейского Союза. Применение такой перекрестной выборки и разбиение временного периода позволяет определить некоторые общие закономерности анализируемых явлений, а также закономерности, типичные для определенных стран. Созданная модель может быть использована для подготовки процедур моделирования и прогнозирования планируемого энергопотребления на национальном и международном уровнях.Здійснено спробу побудувати модель споживання енергії з урахуванням макроекономічних факторів, таких як ВВП, індекс цін споживача, та демографічних даних. Запропонована модель дозволяє за допомогою механізму виправлення похибок визначити коротко- і довгострокові стосунки між змінними, що аналізуються. Використано просторово-часову вибірку даних з 1980 по 2005 р. по країнам Європейського Союзу. Застосування такої перехресної вибірки та розкладання часового періоду дозволяє визначити деякі загальні закономірності явища, що аналізується, а також закономірності, типові для визначених країн. Розроблену модель можна використовувати для підготовки процедур моделювання та прогнозування енергоспоживання, що планується, на національному та міжнародному рівнях
A descriptive analysis of relations between parents' self-reported smoking behavior and infants' daily exposure to environmental tobacco smoke
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The aims of the present study were to examine relations between parents' self-reported smoking behavior and infants' daily exposure to environmental tobacco smoke, as assessed by urinary cotinine-to-creatinine ratio (CCR), and to describe the CCR over seven days among infants at home.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A convenience sample of 27 households was drawn. Each household had to have at least one daily tobacco smoker and one child up to three years of age. Over a seven-day period, urine samples were obtained from the child daily. To examine relations between parents' self-reported smoking and infants' daily CCR, generalized estimating equation (GEE) analysis was used.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The data revealed that infants from households with indoor smoking had higher CCRs than infants in households with outdoor smoking. CCRs were higher in girls than in boys. Older infants had lower CCRs than younger infants. Smoking outside the home versus inside the home, infant's gender, and infants' age accounted for 68% of the variance in CCR in a GEE data analysis model. No increase or decrease of CCR over time was found.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The findings suggest that parents' self-reported smoking indoors at home versus outdoors is predictive of CCR among infants three and younger. Higher CCR concentrations in girls' urine need further examination. Furthermore, significant fluctuations in daily CCR were not apparent in infants over a seven-day time period.</p
What are the beliefs of pediatricians and dietitians regarding complementary food introduction to prevent allergy?
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The timing of complementary food introduction is controversial. Providing information on the timing of dietary introduction is crucial to the primary prevention of food allergy. The American Academy of Pediatrics offers dietary recommendations that were updated in 2008.</p> <p>Objective</p> <p>Identify the recommendations that general pediatricians and registered dietitians provide to parents and delineate any differences in counselling.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A 9-item survey was distributed to pediatricians and dietitians online and by mail. Information on practitioner type, gender, length of practice and specific recommendations regarding complementary food introduction and exposure was collected.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>181 surveys were returned with a 54% response rate from pediatricians. It was not possible to calculate a meaningful dietitian response rate due to overlapping email databases. 52.5% of all respondents were pediatricians and 45.9% were dietitians. The majority of pediatricians and dietitians advise mothers that peanut abstinence during pregnancy and lactation is unnecessary. Dietitians were more likely to counsel mothers to breastfeed their infants to prevent development of atopic dermatitis than pediatricians. Hydrolyzed formulas for infants at risk of developing allergy were the top choice of formula amongst both practitioners. For food allergy prevention, pediatricians were more likely to recommend delayed introduction of peanut and egg, while most dietitians recommended no delay in allergenic food introduction.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>In the prophylaxis of food allergy, pediatricians are less aware than dietitians of the current recommendation that there is no benefit in delaying allergenic food introduction beyond 4 to 6 months. More dietitians than pediatricians believe that breastfeeding decreases the risk of atopic dermatitis. Practitioners may benefit from increased awareness of current guidelines.</p
"Rehabilitation schools for scoliosis" thematic series: describing the methods and results
The Scoliosis Rehabilitation model begins with the correct diagnosis and evaluation of the patient, to make treatment decisions oriented to the patient. The treatment is based on observation, education, scoliosis specific exercises, and bracing. The state of research in the field of conservative treatment is insufficient. There is some evidence supporting scoliosis specific exercises as a part of the rehabilitation treatment, however, the evidence is poor and the different methods are not known by most of the scientific community. The only way to improve the knowledge and understanding of the different physiotherapy methodologies (specific exercises), integrated into the whole rehabilitation program, is to establish a single and comprehensive source of information about it. This is what the SCOLIOSIS Journal is going to do through the "Rehabilitation Schools for Scoliosis" Thematic Series, where technical papers coming from the different schools will be published

Antibody Recognition of Cancer-Related Gangliosides and Their Mimics Investigated Using in silico Site Mapping
Modified gangliosides may be overexpressed in certain types of cancer, thus, they are considered a valuable target in cancer immunotherapy. Structural knowledge of their interaction with antibodies is currently limited, due to the large size and high flexibility of these ligands. In this study, we apply our previously developed site mapping technique to investigate the recognition of cancer-related gangliosides by anti-ganglioside antibodies. The results reveal a potential ganglioside-binding motif in the four antibodies studied, suggesting the possibility of structural convergence in the anti-ganglioside immune response. The structural basis of the recognition of ganglioside-mimetic peptides is also investigated using site mapping and compared to ganglioside recognition. The peptides are shown to act as structural mimics of gangliosides by interacting with many of the same binding site residues as the cognate carbohydrate epitopes. These studies provide important clues as to the structural basis of immunological mimicry of carbohydrates
cis-Expression QTL Analysis of Established Colorectal Cancer Risk Variants in Colon Tumors and Adjacent Normal Tissue
Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified 19 risk variants associated with colorectal cancer. As most of these risk variants reside outside the coding regions of genes, we conducted cis-expression quantitative trait loci (cis-eQTL) analyses to investigate possible regulatory functions on the expression of neighboring genes. Forty microsatellite stable and CpG island methylator phenotype-negative colorectal tumors and paired adjacent normal colon tissues were used for genome-wide SNP and gene expression profiling. We found that three risk variants (rs10795668, rs4444235 and rs9929218, using near perfect proxies rs706771, rs11623717 and rs2059252, respectively) were significantly associated (FDR q-value ≤0.05) with expression levels of nearby genes (<2 Mb up- or down-stream). We observed an association between the low colorectal cancer risk allele (A) for rs10795668 at 10p14 and increased expression of ATP5C1 (q = 0.024) and between the colorectal cancer high risk allele (C) for rs4444235 at 14q22.2 and increased expression of DLGAP5 (q = 0.041), both in tumor samples. The colorectal cancer low risk allele (A) for rs9929218 at 16q22.1 was associated with a significant decrease in expression of both NOL3 (q = 0.017) and DDX28 (q = 0.046) in the adjacent normal colon tissue samples. Of the four genes, DLGAP5 and NOL3 have been previously reported to play a role in colon carcinogenesis and ATP5C1 and DDX28 are mitochondrial proteins involved in cellular metabolism and division, respectively. The combination of GWAS findings, prior functional studies, and the cis-eQTL analyses described here suggest putative functional activities for three of the colorectal cancer GWAS identified risk loci as regulating the expression of neighboring genes
