    Fusarium species and mycotoxin profiles on commercial maize hybrids in Germany

    Abstract High year-to-year variability in the incidence of Fusarium spp. and mycotoxin contamination was observed in a two-year survey investigating the impact of maize ear rot in 84 field samples from Germany. Fusarium verticillioides, F. graminearum, and F. proliferatum were the predominant species infecting maize kernels in 2006, whereas in 2007 the most frequently isolated species were F. graminearum, F. cerealis and F. subglutinans. Fourteen Fusariumrelated mycotoxins were detected as contaminants of maize kernels analyzed by a multi-mycotoxin determination method. In 2006, a growth season characterized by high temperature and low rainfall during anthesis and early grain filling, 75% of the maize samples were contaminated with deoxynivalenol, 34% with fumonisins and 27% with zearalenone. In 2007, characterized by moderate temperatures and frequent rainfall during the entire growth season, none of the 40 maize samples had quantifiable levels of fumonisins while deoxynivalenol and zearalenone were detected in 90% and 93% of the fields, respectively. In addition, 3-acetyldeoxynivalenol, 15-acetyldeoxnivalenol, moniliformin, beauvericin, nivalenol and enniatin B were detected as common contaminants produced in both growing seasons. The results demonstrate a significant mycotoxin contamination associated with maize ear rots in Germany and indicate, with regard to anticipated climate change, that fumonisins-producing species already present in German maize production may become more important.     Effect of environmental conditions on plant growth regulator activity of fungicidal seed treatments of barley

    The triazole fungicide triadimenol is known to have plant growth regulator (PGR) activity in cereals when applied as a seed dressing. The effect of environmental conditions on PGR activity of triadimenol, other triazoles (flutriafol, prothioconazole, tebuconazole), the benzimidazole fuberidazole, imidazoles (imazalil, prochloraz), and the strobilurin fluoxastrobin on barley (Hordeum vulgare) was investigated using commercial seed dressings also including pyrimethanil (anilinopyrimidine) and triazoxide (benzotriazine), under controlled conditions. Irrespective of temperature or soil water content (SWC) triazole-containing seed treatments had a significant effect on the time and rate of plant emergence. Both triadimenolcontaining products significantly reduced the length of subcrown internodes and resulted in reduced shoot length three weeks after sowing. Growth suppression was stronger under optimal environmental conditions (17 to 19°C, 60 % SWC). Under suboptimal conditions – 9 to 10°C and 40 % SWC, respectively – no differences in shoot length were detected five weeks after sowing, whereas under optimal conditions plant growth retardation was still significant. The flutriafol-containing product partly inhibited shoot elongation, but never affected dry mass accumulation and root growth. The strobilurin-containing seed dressing had no marked plant growth activities on seedling emergence, shoot length and subcrown internode, but slightly stimulated root growth under all environmental conditions. The results indicate varying PGR activities of triazole seed dressings in response to mixing partner and growth conditions and suggest an increased stress tolerance of seedlings treated with triadimenol, enabling barley to better cope with suboptimal environmental conditions

    Screening for affective dysregulation in school-aged children: relationship with comprehensive measures of affective dysregulation and related mental disorders

    Affective dysregulation (AD) is characterized by irritability, severe temper outbursts, anger, and unpredictable mood swings, and is typically classified as a transdiagnostic entity. A reliable and valid measure is needed to adequately identify children at risk of AD. This study sought to validate a parent-rated screening questionnaire, which is part of the comprehensive Diagnostic Tool for Affective Dysregulation in Children (DADYS-Screen), by analyzing relationships with comprehensive measures of AD and related mental disorders in a community sample of children with and without AD. The sample comprised 1114 children aged 8–12 years and their parents. We used clinical, parent, and child ratings for our analyses. Across all raters, the DADYS-Screen showed large correlations with comprehensive measures of AD. As expected, correlations were stronger for measures of externalizing symptoms than for measures of internalizing symptoms. Moreover, we found negative associations with emotion regulation strategies and health-related quality of life. In receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analyses, the DADYS-Screen adequately identified children with AD and provided an optimal cut-off. We conclude that the DADYS-Screen appears to be a reliable and valid measure to identify school-aged children at risk of AD

    Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on children with and without affective dysregulation and their families

    Analyzing COVID-19-related stress in children with affective dysregulation (AD) seems especially interesting, as these children typically show heightened reactivity to potential stressors and an increased use of maladaptive emotion regulation strategies. Children in out-of-home care often show similar characteristics to those with AD. Since COVID-19 has led to interruptions in psychotherapy for children with mental health problems and to potentially reduced resources to implement treatment strategies in daily life in families or in out-of-home care, these children might show a particularly strong increase in stress levels. In this study, 512 families of children without AD and 269 families of children with AD reported on COVID-19-related stress. The sample comprised screened community, clinical, and out-of-home care samples. Sociodemographic factors, characteristics of child and caregiver before the pandemic, and perceived change in external conditions due to the pandemic were examined as potential risk or protective factors. Interestingly, only small differences emerged between families of children with and without AD or between subsamples: families of children with AD and families in out-of-home care were affected slightly more, but in few domains. Improvements and deteriorations in treatment-related effects balanced each other out. Overall, the most stable and strongest risk factor for COVID-19-related stress was perceived negative change in external conditions—particularly family conditions and leisure options. Additionally, caregiver characteristics emerged as risk factors across most models. Actions to support families during the pandemic should, therefore, facilitate external conditions and focus on caregiver characteristic to reduce familial COVID-19-related stress.     The polarization observables T, P, and H and their impact on Îłp→pπ0\gamma p \to p\pi^0 multipoles

    Data on the polarization observables T, P, and H for the reaction Îłp→pπ0\gamma p\to p\pi^0 are reported. Compared to earlier data from other experiments, our data are more precise and extend the covered range in energy and angle substantially. The results were extracted from azimuthal asymmetries measured using a transversely polarized target and linearly polarized photons. The data were taken at the Bonn electron stretcher accelerator ELSA with the CBELSA/TAPS detector. Within the Bonn-Gatchina partial wave analysis, the new polarization data lead to a significant narrowing of the error band for the multipoles for neutral-pion photoproduction

    What contributes to patient and parent satisfaction with medication in the treatment of children with ADHD? A report on the development of a new rating scale

    Satisfaction with medication is important in the evaluation of overall treatment outcome. There is a lack of consistent and validated rating scales for satisfaction with medication in ADHD, therefore comparison across studies is difficult. Here, we analyse the psychometric properties of the satisfaction with medication scale (SAMS), a new item-based questionnaire that assesses satisfaction with ADHD medication. Furthermore, we evaluate the predictive effect of ADHD symptoms and quality of life (QoL) on satisfaction. Data on satisfaction with Equasym XL¼ (methylphenidate) were collected in the OBSEER study using the parent (SAMS-P, n = 589) and patient (SAMS-S, n = 552) versions of the SAMS questionnaire. Internal consistency, item-total and cross-informant correlations, and the stability of satisfaction ratings over time were assessed. Satisfaction with medication scores were then correlated with ratings of ADHD symptoms and QoL. Rates of overall satisfaction with Equasym XL¼ among parents and children were high (>70%), as was internal consistency for both SAMS-P and SAMS-S (Cronbach’s alpha > 0.9). Similarly, item-total correlations were high (r = 0.71–0.90) for SAMS-P and medium–high (r = 0.57–0.77) for SAMS-S. Cross-informant correlations and the stability of satisfaction ratings were moderate (r = 0.54–0.59 and 0.48–0.60, respectively). ADHD symptom and QoL ratings were significantly negative and positive predictors of satisfaction, explaining 36–52% of satisfaction variance at the final visit. The results show that parent and patient satisfaction was high and could be assessed reliably with the new SAMS questionnaire. Parent and patient ratings were moderately correlated, and symptom severity, functional impairment and QoL were the most significant predictors of satisfaction

    Media Reporting and Business Cycles: Empirical Evidence based on News Data

    Recent literature suggests that news shocks could be an important driver of economic cycles. In this article, we use a direct measure of news sentiment derived from media reports. This allows us to examine whether innovations in the reporting tone correlate with changes in the assessment and expectations of the business situation as reported by firms in the German manufacturing sector. We fi nd that innovations in news reporting affect business expectations, even when conditioning on the current business situation and industrial production. The dynamics of the empirical model con rm theoretical predictions that news innovations affect real variables such as production via changes in expectations. Looking at individual sectors within manufacturing, we fi nd that macroeconomic news is at least as important for business expectations as sector-spefici c news. This is consistent with the existence of information complementarities across sectors

    Gestational age-dependent fetal fluid dynamics in the ovine developmental model: establishment of surrogate markers for the differentiation of stem cell origin

    The ovine developmental model represents the standard in vivo model for studies involving maternofetal physiology, amniotic fluid (AF) research, and fetal cell therapy prior to human clinical use. Although being close to the human fetal anatomy, 2 separate extraembryonic fluid compartments remain during gestation, known as the amnion and the allantois. A clear distinction between AF versus allantoic fluid (AL) is therefore indispensable for correct scientific conclusions with regard to human translation. In the presented study, the biochemical composition of AF and AL was evaluated in ovine gravid uteri postmortem (n = 31) over the entire gestation. Four parameters, consisting of Na+, Cl-, Mg2+, and total protein, have been found to allow for specific discrimination of the 2 fetal fluids at all gestational phases and therefore as potential surrogate parameters for gestational age. In addition, volumetric changes of the developing fetus and the 2 fetal fluid cavities were analyzed by contrast-enhanced computed tomography (n = 12). AF showed a significant, linear volumetric increase over gestation, whereas AL volume maintained relatively static independent of gestational age. These results serve as a basis for future studies by providing surrogate markers enabling a reliable distinction of isolated fetal fluids and contained cells in the ovine developmental model over the entire gestation
