Objective: Baker’s cyst (BC) is also known as popliteal cyst. To evaluate its effect on intra-articular pathology, it is important to have the exact volume of the cyst. As BC may change its shape due to mass effect of the surrounding anatomic structures, it is difficult to measure the exact volume of BC. This study examined the relationship between three-dimensionally measured BC volume and symptomatic intra-articular knee pathologies. Materials and Methods: The magnetic resonance (MR) images of 45 patients with symptomatic knees were retrospectively examined. The BC volumes were measured via volumetric analysis. The joint effusion was examined in the sagittal plane in T2-proton density-weighted images. The medial plicae were assessed in accordance with the modified Sakakibara classification. Using the MR images, the meniscuses were classified in accordance with the meniscus rupture classification of Stoller et al. The cartilaginous lesions were analyzed using an MR grading system. In this study, correlations between the following measures were analyzed: BC volume and effusion level, medial plica presence, medial femoral condyle, medial tibial condyle, lateral femoral condyle and lateral tibial condyle cartilage degeneration, and medial meniscus anterior horn, medial meniscus posterior horn, lateral meniscus anterior and posterior horn ruptures. Results: Cartilage degeneration, medial plicae, increase in intra-articular effusion, and increase in the BC volume were found to be statistically significant (p<0.01). Conclusion: Cartilage degeneration, medial plicae, and increase in intra-articular effusion may increase the BC volume. We believe that this study may contribute to clinicians in understanding the relationship between BC volume changes and pathologies causing intra-articular knee symptoms

AbstractThe contribution of Turkic tribes into the world development caravan was spoken about much this century. There are many sources about that the traces of brave soldiers of Turkic Kaganate inhabited in the Central Asia reached China, Europe, and India. One of them is English eposes with Turkic motives. There have been many talks about Turkic motives in English eposes. It is not because of the current ideas concerning the Turkic source; it is often used in the works of the last century ethnographer- writers. Turkic tribes from the steppe were called barbarous by European people from the wooden territory, the idea confirming the exception of the absence of nomadic civilization was privileged in the developed Europe. Nevertheless, in the history of English literature this heroic epos has an important role. The author of it was people, written in the ancient English-Saxon language; the origin of the work had been kept for centuries, but it was eliminated by the enormous fire in London.Used methods: comparative, applied, historical and integrative

Objectives: In our study, we tried to investigate the determinants of women’s choices about contraception with the aim of discovering whether or not there is a difference in their preferences before and after consultation with a gynaecologist. Material and methods: A total of 1058 women were enrolled. They were given detailed information regarding contraception and contraceptive methods. Subsequently, a survey which was made of 21 questions was administered. Results: Contraceptive counselling significantly changed the contraceptive choice of women. However, influences from social media and friends, their partners and religious belief affected their contraceptive choices. Significant differences in contraceptive choice were observed when women were categorized according to their marital status, education level, household income, age, and number of children. Conclusions: Although contraceptive counselling influenced Turkish women’s choices, there were still other determinants like social media and input from outside sources such as clerics and husbands, which should be overcome

Rare earth element scandium mitigates the chromium toxicity in Lemna minor by regulating photosynthetic performance, hormonal balance and antioxidant machinery

MakaleWOS:000904949200001PubMed ID: 36379288Chromium (Cr) toxicity is a serious problem that threatens the health of living organisms and especially agricultural production. The presence of excess Cr leads to biomass loss by causing the imbalance of biochemical metabolism and inhibiting photosynthetic activity. A new critical approach to cope with Cr toxicity is the use of the rare earth elements (REEs) as an antioxidant defence system enhancer in plants. However, the effect of scandium (Sc), which is one of the REEs, is not clear enough in Lemna minor exposed to Cr toxicity. For this purpose, the photosynthetic and biochemical effects of scandium (50 μM and 200 μM Sc) treatments were investigated in Lemna minor under Cr stress (100 μM, 200 μM and 500 μM Cr). Parameters related to photosynthesis (Fv/Fm, Fv/Fo) were suppressed under Cr stress. Stress altered antioxidant enzymes activities and hormone contents. Sc applications against stress increased the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), NADPH oxidase (NOX), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), lutathione reductase (GR), monodehydroascorbate reductase (MDHAR), and glutathione S-transferase (GST). In addition to the antioxidant system, the contents of indole-3- acetic acid (IAA), abscisic acid (ABA) and jasmonic acid (JA) were also rearranged. However, in all treatment groups, with the provision of ascorbate (AsA) regeneration and effective hormone signaling, reactive oxygen species (ROS) retention which result in high hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) content and lipid peroxidation (TBARS) were effectively removed. Sc promoted the maintenance of cellular redox state by regulating antioxidant pathways included in the AsA-GSH cycle. Our results showed that Sc has great potential to confer tolerance to duckweed by reducing Cr induced oxidative damage, protecting the biochemical reactions of photosynthesis, and improving hormone signaling.Selcuk University Scientific Research Projects Coordinating Offic

Assessment of ventricular and left atrial mechanical functions, atrial electromechanical delay and P wave dispersion in patients with scleroderma

Get PDF
Background: The aim of this study was to investigate ventricular functions and left atrial (LA) mechanical functions, atrial electromechanical coupling, and P wave dispersion in scleroderma patients. Methods: Twenty-six patients with scleroderma and twenty-four controls were included. Left and right ventricular (LV and RV) functions were evaluated using conventional echocardiography and tissue Doppler imaging (TDI). LA volumes were measured using the biplane area- -length method and LA mechanical function parameters were calculated. Inter-intraatrial electromechanical delays were measured by TDI. P wave dispersion was calculated by 12-lead electrocardiograms. Results: LV myocardial performance indices (MPI) and RV MPI were higher in patients with scleroderma (p = 0.000, p = 0.000, respectively) while LA passive emptying fraction was decreased and LA active emptying fraction was increased (p = 0.051, p = 0.000, respectively). P wave dispersion and inter-intraatrial electromechanical delay were significantly higher in patients with scleroderma (25 [10–60] vs 20 [0–30], p = 0.000, 16.50 [7.28–26.38] vs 9.44 [3.79–15.78] and 11.33 [4.88–16.06] vs 4.00 [0–12.90], p < 0.05, respectively). Interatrial electromechanical delay was negatively correlated with LV E wave, (p = 0.018). LV E wave was demonstrated to be a factor independent of the interatrial electromechanical delay (R2 = = 0.270, b = –0.52, p = 0.013). Conclusions: This study showed that in scleroderma patients, global functions of LV, RV and mechanical functions of LA were impaired, intra-interatrial electromechanical delays were prolonged and P wave dispersion was higher. LV E wave was demonstrated to be a factor that is independent of the interatrial electromechanical delay. Reduced LV E wave may also give additional information on the process of risk stratification of atrial fibrillation. (Cardiol J 2011; 18, 3: 261–269
