Pravilnim zbrinjavanjem ozljeda potkoljenice ublažavamo bol, te smanjujemo učestalost nastanka ozbiljnih komplikacija i invaliditeta. Oko 15 % svih ozljeda nastaje upravo na području potkoljenice, a prijelomi kostiju potkoljenice spadaju u najčešće prijelome dugih kosti. Proper care for lower leg injuries relieves pain, and reduces the incidence of serious complications and disability. About 15% of all injuries occur in the lower leg area, and fractures of the lower leg are the most common fractures of long bones. In outpatient conditions, care is focused on proper immobilization of the injured part by placing a suitable splint. The main goal of this paper is to determine the frequency of lower leg injuries, considering the total number of interventions of the prehospital emergency medical service. This research was carried out as a retrospective analysis of the database from the "e-Hitna" IT system of the Institute of emergency medicine of Karlovac County. The research included all patients over the age of 18 who, in the period from January 1, 2022 to December 31, 2022 were treated for lower leg injuries by the EMTs of the Institute of Emergency Medicine of the Karlovac County. Exclusion criteria were patients under 18 years of age and patients examined in an outpatient clinic. For all participants, the following were analyzed: age, sex, type of lower leg injury and mechanism of injury. The research included a total of 166 patients, who had a total of 173 lower leg injuries. The results obtained of this research show that the frequency of injuries of the lower leg in relation to the total number of interventions of the outpatient emergency medical service is 2% . The results also proved that the most common mechanism of lower leg injuries is falls, and that there is no significant difference in the frequency of lower leg injuries with respect to gender

Bee pollen powder as a functional ingredient in frankfurters

No full text
The objective of this study was to determine whether the addition of different pollen powder concentrations (0.0, 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 g/100 g) to frankfurters had an influence on antioxidant potential and oxidative changes during storage, without detrimental effect on the quality of sausages. After cold storage of frankfurters, significant (P < 0.05) reductions of psychrotrophic bacteria populations were achieved with higher amounts of pollen (1.0 and 1.5 g/100 g). Good antioxidant properties and maintained TBARS values were accomplished by incorporating pollen into the frankfurters. In terms of quality parameters, statistically significant changes were obtained regarding the color, but sensory characteristics of the products were not disturbed. Also, the incorporation of pollen did not cause changes in terms of texture profile analyses of frankfurters. It can be concluded that the natural component, bee pollen powder, can be used as an antioxidant in frankfurter formulations, but further research is needed to estimate whether it can be an adequate replacement for synthetic antioxidants

Children and English as a foreign language

It is not often that there is a need to publish a book made up of chapters selected from three previously published books. The Croatian national research project Investigating learning and acquisition of foreign languages at an early school age (led by Mirjana Vilke) and its sequel Investigating learning and acquisition of foreign languages in primary school (led by Yvonne Vrhovac), with their unique experimental longitudinal design and involving four foreign languages, caught attention of the international audience from the very start. The interest has continued to this day. With the growing importance of English as a modern lingua franca teaching English to young learners has spread to practically all parts of the world. This global change, combined with a lack of systematic studies into early language learning in the formal setting, has made findings such as those of the Croatian research highly valuable. The three volumes describing early learning and teaching of English as a foreign language to Croatian young learners from which the chapters in this book were selected – all called Children and foreign languages – were published in 1993, 1995 and 2001, respectively. What is quite unique to the three volumes, and to the present book, is that they offer an in-depth view into early teaching and learning of English from two perspectives: the researchers’ perspective and the teachers’ perspective. It is not often that there is a need to publish a book made up of chapters selected from three previously published books.
