404 King Street: The Charleston County Library and Modern Architecture in Charleston

    Get PDF
This thesis examines the development and construction of the Charleston County Library at 404 King Street in Charleston, South Carolina. The research and analysis of this site provides a case study for the development and treatment of the Modern style in downtown Charleston. Significant aspects of this include evaluation of the community\u27s input and reaction to development of the site, and reactions to its completion and opening. This begins with an overview of the development of the Modern style in America and American library design, and how this translates into South Carolina. Then the influences of these larger communities on the design for the Charleston County Library are studied. Concluding the research is an effort to highlight the structures significance in Charleston, while creating a reference point for a conversation on the role of the recent past and evaluating mid-century architecture

COMMUNITY SUPPORTED AGRICULTURE VALUES: A COMPARISON ACROSS GROUPS

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) programs offer consumers the chance to share the risk with farming operations while gaining access to fresh, local foods. While research on CSA shareholder values such as share affordability or the local impact of participation has been conducted in the past decade and beyond, less attention has been paid to direct value-mapping of the shareholders themselves. This research seeks to determine consumer values around the CSA purchasing decision using the Best-Worst Scaling Approach. Based on a focus group discussion with CSA shareholders in a university wellness voucher program, we used affinity diagramming to develop a list of eleven values. A subsequent survey of 197 University of Kentucky employees registering for the program in 2022 was developed, revealing that for those with CSA experience, the quality of produce and the local impact of their CSA purchasing decision are among the most important attributes, whereas those who chose not to purchase a CSA share most value food affordability. The goal of this research is to open new avenues for CSA administrators to promote CSA programs by targeting priority value clusters and thereby increase the program impact

Primary Care Behavioral Health Consultation Reduces Depression Levels Among Mood-Disordered Patients

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of behavioral health consultative services on levels of depressive symptoms in patients diagnosed with a mood disorder. Two-hundred fifty-one patients with a form of mood disorder completed the PHQ-9 screening tool for depression both before and after a treatment period lasting an average of three months, during which patients received behavioral health consultation services. Results showed that 49.8% of patients participating in this integrated behavioral health care program experienced improvements of at least 50% in PHQ-9 scores from pre- to post-test. Improvements in PHQ-9 scores of at least a five points from pre-to post-test were experienced by 80.5% of participants. At least some improvement in PHQ-9 scores from pre- to post-test was observed in 94.8% of patients with a mood disorder. Improvement in PHQ-9 scores was not significantly correlated with the number of behavioral or medical visits made during the intervention period. The degree of improvement in PHQ-9 scores seen in persons receiving psychotropic medication during the program period did not differ significantly from that of persons not receiving psychotropic medication. The number of medical visits decreased significantly during receipt of behavioral health consultation services

Consequences of Hyperoxia and the Toxicity of Oxygen in the Lung

Oxygen (O2) is life essential but as a drug has a maximum positive biological benefit and accompanying toxicity effects. Oxygen is therapeutic for treatment of hypoxemia and hypoxia associated with many pathological processes. Pathophysiological processes are associated with increased levels of hyperoxia-induced reactive O2 species (ROS) which may readily react with surrounding biological tissues, damaging lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids. Protective antioxidant defenses can become overwhelmed with ROS leading to oxidative stress. Activated alveolar capillary endothelium is characterized by increased adhesiveness causing accumulation of cell populations such as neutrophils, which are a source of ROS. Increased levels of ROS cause hyperpermeability, coagulopathy, and collagen deposition as well as other irreversible changes occurring within the alveolar space. In hyperoxia, multiple signaling pathways determine the pulmonary cellular response: apoptosis, necrosis, or repair. Understanding the effects of O2 administration is important to prevent inadvertent alveolar damage caused by hyperoxia in patients requiring supplemental oxygenation

Analysis of some compliance calibration data for chevron-notch bar and rod specimens

A set of equations describing certain fracture mechanics parameters for chevron-notch bar and rod specimens are presented. They are developed by fitting earlier compliance calibration data. The difficulty in determining the minimum stress intensity coefficient and the critical crack length is discussed

The theory of a solar sail is introduced and a simple model of a 1000m2 solar sail weighing 2000kg launched from near the Earth is considered. It is found that the solar sail can reach a speed of 26km s-1 in 6.33 years but beyond that acceleration is very small, making a solar sail viable for exploring the edge of the solar system

When playing the popular casino game Blackjack, the odds of getting a “blackjack†are quite low. The online gambling industry is growing rapidly, so when playing Blackjack online and the computer manages to win by getting multiple blackjacks in a row, was it due to “luck†or was the computer program cheating

The paper looks at the claim that Earth is unique in the sense that the Moon appears to be almost exactly the same size as the Sun when looking up from the surface of the Earth. The paper investigates other moons in the solar system and the size they, and the Sun, appear to be from the surface of the planets the moons orbit. It is found that the Earth is indeed unique in having a moon that is “perfectly†sized to cause a total eclipse
