Challenges for Science and Mathematics Faculty

The increased science and mathematics teacher licensure requirements for K-8 teachers are clearly necessary to prepare teachers to appropriately teach the new Virginia SOLs [1]; The expectations of a program equivalent to 12 hours of science and 12 hours of mathematics for the PreK-6 endorsement and the 21 hours each of math and science to teach middle school math and science must be chosen very carefully indeed if future teachers are to be prepared to teach the specific SOL content, as well as practical applications and the use of appropriate technology“. Most Virginia colleges and universities are not currently offering the appropriate courses nor the courses taught in the appropriate manner to meet new licensure requirements. Both interdisciplinary courses and interdisciplinary degree programs may be required

    Hole cutter

    Get PDF
An adjustable hole cutter is described for use in forming circular openings in workpieces. The hole cutter is characterized by a mount of a substantially planar configuration, positionable into a plane paralleling the working plane of a selected workpiece. It also contains a shaft for imparting rotary motion to the mount about an axis of rotation normally related to the working plane, a plurality of stabilizing struts for resiliently supporting the mount in parallelism with the working plane as rotary motion is imparted thereto, a drill bit for drilling a pilot hole concentric with the axis of rotation, and an elongated cutting tool adjustably seated within a radially extended slot

Does understanding individuals require idiographic judgement?

    Get PDF
Idiographic understanding has been proposed as a response to concern that criteriological diagnosis cannot capture the nature of human individuality. It can seem that understanding individuals requires, instead, a distinct form of ‘individualised’ judgement and this claim receives endorsement by the inventor of the term ‘idiographic’, Wilhelm Windelband. I argue, however, that none of the options for specifying a model of individualised judgement, to explain what idiographic judgement might be, will work. I suggest, at the end, that narrative, rather than idiographic, understanding is a more promising response to the limitations of criteriological diagnosis

Using the Twentieth Century Reanalysis to assess climate variability for the European wind industry

We characterise the long-term variability of European near-surface wind speeds using 142 years of data from the Twentieth Century Reanalysis (20CR), and consider the potential of such long-baseline climate data sets for wind energy applications. The low resolution of the 20CR would severely restrict its use on its own for wind farm site-screening. We therefore perform a simple statistical calibration to link it to the higher-resolution ERA-Interim data set (ERAI), such that the adjusted 20CR data has the same wind speed distribution at each location as ERAI during their common period. Using this corrected 20CR data set, wind speeds and variability are characterised in terms of the long-term mean, standard deviation, and corresponding trends. Many regions of interest show extremely weak trends on century timescales, but contain large multidecadal variability. Since reanalyses such as ERAI are often used to provide the background climatology for wind farm site assessments, but contain only a few decades of data, our results can be used as a way of incorporating decadal-scale wind climate variability into such studies, allowing investment risks for wind farms to be reduced.Comment: 18 pages, plus 4 page supplementary information included here as Appendix D. Optimizing an array of antennas for cellular coverage from a high altitude platform

    Get PDF
In a wireless communications network served by a high altitude platform (HAP) the cochannel interference is a function of the antenna beamwidth, angular separation and. sidelobe level. At the millimeter wave frequencies proposed for HAPs, an array of aperture type antennas on the platform is a practicable solution for serving the cells. We present a method for predicting cochannel interference based on curve-fit approximations for radiation patterns of elliptic beams which illuminate cell edges with optimum power, and a means of estimating optimum beamwidths for each cell of a regular hexagonal layout. The method is then applied to a 121 cell architecture. Where sidelobes are modeled As a flat floor at 40-dB below peak directivity, a cell cluster size of four yields carrier-to-interference ratios (CIRs), which vary from 15 dB at cell edges to 27 dB at cell centers. On adopting a cluster size of seven, these figures increase, respectively, to 19 and 30 dB. On reducing the sidelobe level, the. improvement in CIR can be quantified. The method also readily allows for regions of overlapping channel coverage to be shown

CHARACTERIZATION OF HSP90 SUBPOPULATION CONFORMATIONS TARGETED BY INHIBITORS AND THE EFFECT OF PHOSPHORYLATION ON HSP90’S ASSOCIATION WITH CO-CHAPERONE AND CLIENT PROTEINS

Heat shock protein 90 (Hsp90) is a highly conserved and dynamic molecular chaperone protein important for regulating protein activity and interactions in cellular signaling and adaptive stress responses. As a key regulatory protein, Hsp90 is often manipulated by cancer cells to enhance tumorigenic cell growth and even exists in some tumors as a multimeric complex called the “epichaperome.” With its linked role in cancer proliferation, Hsp90 serves as a promising cancer therapeutic target, with many Hsp90 inhibitors developed including geldanamycin and PU-H71. With limited information existing regarding epichaperome formation and structure, this study seeks to investigate potential regulatory mechanisms for epichaperome stabilization. In this study, we investigate the conformational states of Hsp90 targeted by geldanamycin and PU-H71 using chemical cross-linking and mass spectrometric analysis. Our data suggests that geldanamycin targets an open-like conformation of Hsp90, while PU-H71 targets a closed-like conformation of Hsp90 in a multicomplex epichaperome. Additionally, we detected enriched phosphorylation in the charged linker region of PU-H71-bound Hsp90 at residues S226 and S255. Mammalian expression vectors were developed containing mCherry linked to Hsp90. Within the Hsp90 sequence, S226 and S255 were mutated to phosphomimetic or phosphorylation-null amino acids. Confocal microscopy and immunoprecipitation analysis of mCherry linked to Hsp90 revealed that phosphorylation null mutants were associated much less with Hsp90 co-chaperones than unmutated Hsp90 and phosphomimetic mutated Hsp90. Overall, the results indicated that phosphorylation likely plays an important role in epichaperome formation and assembly

Results of tests OA26 and IA16 in the NASA/ARC 3.5-foot hypersonic wind tunnel on an 0.015-scale model (36-OTS) of the space shuttle configuration 140A/B to obtain pressures for venting analysis

Tests were conducted, from November 15 to December 4, 1973, to obtain surface pressure data on an 0.015-scale replica of the Space Shuttle Vehicle 4. Data were obtained at Mach numbers of 5.3, 7.4, and 10.3, to support the venting analysis for both launch and entry conditions. These tests were the final tests in a series covering a Mach number range from 0.6 to 10.3. The model was instrumented with pressure orifices in the vicinity of the cargo bay door hinge and parting lines, and on the side of the fuselage at the crew compartment, and below the orbital maneuvering system pods at the aft compartment. The model was tested at angles of attack and sideslip consistent with expected divergencies from the nominal trajectory
