Phonon entropy of alloying and ordering of Cu-Au
Inelastic neutron scattering spectra were measured with a time-of-flight spectrometer on six disordered Cu-Au alloys at 300 K. The neutron-weighted phonon density of states was obtained from a conventional analysis of these spectra. Several methods were developed to account for this neutron weighting and obtain the phonon entropy of the disordered alloys. The phonon entropies of formation of disordered fcc Cu-Au alloys obtained in this way were generally mutually consistent, and were also consistent with predictions from a cluster approximation obtained from ab-initio calculations by Ozolin[underaccent cedilla [below] s-breve, Wolverton, and Zunger. We estimate a phonon entropy of disordering of 0.15±0.05kB/atom in Cu3Au at 300 K. A resonance mode associated with the motions of the heavy Au atoms in the Cu-rich alloys was observed at 9 meV. An analysis of the resonance mode provided a check on the partial phonon entropy of Au atoms

LONG-TERM TILLAGE EFFECTS ON CONTINUOUS CORN YIELDS
Long-term comparisons of alternative tillage systems are needed to evaluate their effect on corn (Zea mays L.) yield under the variable temperature and rainfall conditions of the Corn Belt. Our objective was to evaluate long-term effects of alternative tillage systems on corn growth and yield on low organic matter silt loam soils. The effect of no-tillage (NT), chisel plow (CP), and moldboard plow (MP) treatments on plant density and grain yield was measured from 1981 through 1990 on Palsgrove and Rozetta silt loam (fine-silty, mixed mesic Typic Hapludalfs) soils. Tillage treatments were randomly allocated to plots in 1981 and treatments were applied in subsequent years without rerandomization. Therefore, measurements over years on the same plot were treated as repeated measures. Grain yields for all tillage treatments were primarily affected by water stress, which varied with yearly weather conditions. Grain yield decreased approximately 0.3 Mg ha-1 per cm weighted water stress (WWS) for WWS \u3e8 cm. No statistically significant yield differences among tillage treatments, when averaged over the 10-year period covered by the experiment, were detected. A combined analysis indicated that yield differences among tillage treatments did not depend on whether water stress or non-stress conditions occurred. Over half the variation in yearly differences in grain yield between tilled and NT treatments was explained by differences in plant density. Years were classified as stress or non-stress years on the basis of observed water stress and yearly weather factors. Variability among years was partitioned into variability among years within stress years and non-stress years. Social presence in the 21st Century: an adjustment to the Community of Inquiry framework
The Community of Inquiry framework, originally proposed by Garrison, Anderson and Archer (2000) identifies teaching, social and cognitive presences as central to a successful online educational experience. This article presents the findings of a study conducted in Uruguay between 2007 and 2010. The research aimed to establish the role of cognitive, social and teaching presences in the professional development of 40 English language teachers on Continuous Professional Development (CPD) programmes delivered in blended learning settings. The findings suggest that teaching presence and cognitive presence have themselves 'become social'. The research points to social presence as a major lever for engagement, sense-making and peer support. Based on the patterns identified in the study, this article puts forward an adjustment to the Community of Inquiry framework, which shows social presence as more prominent within the teaching and cognitive constructs than the original version of the framework suggests
Band Gap Engineering with Ultralarge Biaxial Strains in Suspended Monolayer MoS2
We demonstrate the continuous and reversible tuning of the optical band gap
of suspended monolayer MoS2 membranes by as much as 500 meV by applying very
large biaxial strains. By using chemical vapor deposition (CVD) to grow
crystals that are highly impermeable to gas, we are able to apply a pressure
difference across suspended membranes to induce biaxial strains. We observe the
effect of strain on the energy and intensity of the peaks in the
photoluminescence (PL) spectrum, and find a linear tuning rate of the optical
band gap of 99 meV/%. This method is then used to study the PL spectra of
bilayer and trilayer devices under strain, and to find the shift rates and
Gr\"uneisen parameters of two Raman modes in monolayer MoS2. Finally, we use
this result to show that we can apply biaxial strains as large as 5.6% across
micron sized areas, and report evidence for the strain tuning of higher level

Impact of Level of Effort on the Effects of Compliance with the 3-Hour Rule
Objective
To determine if patientsâ level of effort (LOE) in therapy sessions during traumatic brain injury (TBI) rehabilitation modifies the effect of compliance with the 3-Hour Rule of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.
Design
Propensity score methodology applied to the TBI-Practice-Based Evidence (TBI-PBE) database, consisting of multi-site, prospective, longitudinal observational data.
Setting
Acute inpatient rehabilitation facilities (IRF).
Participants
Patients (n=1820) who received their first IRF admission for TBI in the US and were enrolled for 3 and 9 month follow-up.
Main Outcome Measures
Participation Assessment with Recombined Tools-Objective-17, FIMTM Motor and Cognitive scores, Satisfaction with Life Scale, and Patient Health Questionnaire-9.
Results
When the full cohort was examined, no strong main effect of compliance with the 3-Hour Rule was identified and LOE did not modify the effect of compliance with the 3-Hour Rule. In contrast, LOE had a strong positive main effect on all outcomes, except depression. When the sample was stratified by level of disability, LOE modified the effect of compliance, particularly on the outcomes of participants with less severe disability. For these patients, providing 3 hours of therapy for 50%+ of therapy days in the context of low effort resulted in poorer performance on select outcome measures at discharge and up to 9 months post discharge compared to patients with <50% of 3-hr therapy days.
Conclusions
LOE is an active ingredient in inpatient TBI rehabilitation, while compliance with the 3-Hour Rule was not found to have a substantive impact on the outcomes. The results support matching time in therapy during acute TBI rehabilitation to patientsâ LOE in order to optimize long-term benefits on outcomes
Vibrational entropy of spinodal decomposition in FeCr
Inelastic neutron-scattering spectra were measured on stoichiometric Fe0.50Cr0.50 prepared as a body-centered-cubic (bcc) solid solution, and after increasing amounts of chemical unmixing on the bcc lattice induced by annealing the solid solution at 773 K. These spectra were reduced by a conventional procedure to a neutron-weighted vibrational density of states. Mössbauer spectrometry was used to characterize the extent of decomposition after annealing. A neutron-weight correction was performed, using results from the Mössbauer spectra and recent data on inelastic nuclear resonant scattering from 57Fe-Cr. The vibrational entropy of decomposition was found to be â0.17±0.01kB/atom, nearly equal to the change in configurational entropy after spinodal decomposition. Effects of vibrational entropy on the thermodynamics of unmixing are analyzed, showing a large effect on the free energy with the formation of Cr-rich zones, and a large effect on the critical temperature for spinodal decomposition for equiatomic Fe0.50Cr0.50
Realization of an Inductance Scale Traceable to the Quantum Hall Effect Using an Automated Synchronous Sampling System
In this paper, the realization of an inductance scale from 1~H to 10~H
for frequencies ranging between 50~Hz to 20~kHz is presented. The scale is
realized directly from a series of resistance standards using a fully automated
synchronous sampling system. A careful systematic characterization of the
system shows that the lowest uncertainties, around 12~H/H, are obtained
for inductances in the range from 10~mH to 100~mH at frequencies in the kHz
range. This new measurement system which was successfully evaluated during an
international comparison, provides a primary realization of the henry, directly
traceable to the quantum Hall effect. An additional key feature of this system
is its versatility. In addition to resistance-inductance (R-L) comparison, any
kind of impedances can be compared: R-R, R-C, L-L or C-C, giving this sampling
system a great potential of use in many laboratories around the world
Quantum line bundles on noncommutative sphere
Noncommutative (NC) sphere is introduced as a quotient of the enveloping
algebra of the Lie algebra su(2). Using the Cayley-Hamilton identities we
introduce projective modules which are analogues of line bundles on the usual
sphere (we call them quantum line bundles) and define a multiplicative
structure in their family. Also, we compute a pairing between certain quantum
line bundles and finite dimensional representations of the NC sphere in the
spirit of the NC index theorem. A new approach to constructing the differential
calculus on a NC sphere is suggested. The approach makes use of the projective
modules in question and gives rise to a NC de Rham complex being a deformation
