Through studying peoples of the world – their diversity, connections, cultures, and histories -- this course offers anthropological knowledge and analytic skills to a broad range of students while preparing potential majors for further training in social theory and fieldwork methods. Lectures, readings, images, films, and discussion explore the actions, opinions, identities, and experiences of diverse people throughout the world. You will work on understanding, interpreting, and analyzing the materials. Exams and writing assignments will provide opportunities to develop your interpretations systematically and polish your writing skills. After successfully completing this course, you will be able to better identify key questions for understanding the world and be able to analyze academic literature about global cultures

    Efficient operation of a high-power X-band gyroklystron

    Get PDF
Experimental studies of amplification in a two-cavity X-band gyroklystron are reported. The system utilizes a thermionic magnetron injection gun at voltages up to 440 kV and currents up to 190 A in 1-μs pulses. Optimum performance is achieved by tapering the magnetic-field profile. Peak powers of 20 MW in the TE01 mode at 9.87 GHz are measured with calibrated crystals and with methanol calorimetry. Resultant efficiencies are in excess of 31% and large-signal gains surpass 26 dB. The experimental results are in good agreement with simulated results from a partially self-consistent, nonlinear, steady-state code

Abstract This paper takes the 1928 massacre in Colombia as a point of departure, suggesting that it, and the broader popular political challenge it represented to foreign corporations, not only led multinationals to Ecuador (where they would develop the world’s largest banana industry by the early 1950s), but also led multinationals to get out of direct production and develop a system of contract production that defines the industry to the present day. United Fruit turned to Ecuador in the 1930s because land and labor was cheap, available, and unorganized. The same is true today, and the fact that the labor force in the world’s largest banana industry remains essentially unorganized is a huge problem for banana workers throughout Latin America. In a global industry, labor organizing is only as strong as the weakest link. In the case of the banana industry, the weakest link also happens to be the largest one. &nbsp

Collaborative Decision Support and Documentation in Chemical Safety with KnowSEC

To protect the health of human and environment, the European Union implemented the REACH regulation for chemical substances. REACH is an acronym for Registration, Evaluation, Authorization, and Restriction of Chemicals. Under REACH, the authorities have the task of assessing chemical substances, especially those that might pose a risk to human health or environment. The work under REACH is scientifically, technically and procedurally a complex and knowledge-intensive task that is jointly performed by the European Chemicals Agency and member state authorities in Europe. The assessment of substances under REACH conducted in the German Environment Agency is supported by the knowledge-based system KnowSEC, which is used for the screening, documentation, and decision support when working on chemical substances. The software KnowSEC integrates advanced semantic technologies and strong problem solving methods. It allows for the collaborative work on substances in the context of the European REACH regulation. We discuss the applied methods and process models and we report on experiences with the implementation and use of the system
