Integration of biological data resources using image object keying.
This paper proposes a novel concept of ‘image object keying'. The work builds on earlier research in this area and shows how the 3D structure of a protein can be retrieved interactively from a gel electrophoresis protein spot. It uses intelligent image matching operations like the Hough Transform and Edge Detection techniques. Unique aspects are that searches may be initiated from multiple biological resources but with the results being integrated into a single page. A significant outcome of this work is that it enables researchers to search the database without the need to write and complex script
Use of experimental separation limits in the theoretical design of V/STOL inlets
Experimental data from several model inlets are used to generate two parameters which are related to the limit of operation for inlet flow separation. One parameter, called the diffusion ratio, is the ratio of the peak velocity on the inlet surface to the velocity at the diffuser exit and is related to the boundary-layer separation at low throat Mach numbers. The other parameter, the peak Mach number on the inlet surface, is related to the separation at high throat Mach numbers. These parameters are easily calculated from potential flow solutions and thus can be used as a design tool in screening proposed inlet geometries. An illustrative example of an application to an inlet design study for a tilt nacelle VTOL airplane is presented. The value of contraction ratio required to meet the operating requirements yet allow the inlet to remain free of separation as indicated by the two separation parameters is shown
From local laboratory data to public domain database in search of indirect association of diseases: AJAX based gene data search engine.
This paper presents an extensible schema for capturing laboratory gene variance data with its meta-data properties in a semi-structured environment. This paper also focuses on the issues of creating a local and task specific component database which is a subset of global data resources. An XML based genetic disorder component database schema is developed with adequate flexibilities to facilitate searching of gene mutation data. A web based search engine is developed that allows researchers to query a set of gene parameters obtained from local XML schema and subsequently allow them to automatically establish a link with the public domain gene databases. The application applies AJAX (Asynchronous Javascript and XML), a cutting-edge web technology, to carry out the gene data searching function
Microwave and tunable far-infrared laser spectroscopy of the ammonia–water dimer
Microwave and far-infrared spectra of the H3N–HOH dimer have been recorded from 36 to 86 GHz and 520 to 800 GHz with a planar supersonic jet/tunable laser sideband spectrometer. The a-type pure rotational microwave data extend the previous m=0, K=0 A symmetry manifold measurements of Herbine and Dyke [J. Chem. Phys. 83, 3768 (1980)] to higher frequency and also provide an additional set of microwave transitions in the mK=+1 E symmetry manifold. Two sets of five b-type rotation–tunneling bands, one set shifted from the other by an approximately constant 113 MHz, have been observed in the far infrared. The splitting into two sets arises from water tunneling, while the overall band structure is due to internal rotation of the ammonia top. Nonlinear least-squares fits to an internal rotor Hamiltonian provided rotational constants, and an estimation of V3=10.5±5.0 cm–1 for the barrier height to internal rotation for the NH3 monomer. A nonlinear equilibrium hydrogen bond is most consistent with the vibrationally averaged rotational constants; with the angle co^s–1[] determined from , the projection of the ammonia's angular momentum onto the framework; and with the nitrogen quadrupole coupling constants of Herbine and Dyke. The water tunneling splitting and observed selection rules place constraints on the barrier height for proton exchange of the water as well as the most feasible water tunneling path along the intermolecular potential energy surface. An estimated barrier of ~700 cm^–1 is derived for the water tunneling motion about its c axis
Theory of plasmon-enhanced high-harmonic generation in the vicinity of metal nanostructures in noble gases
We present a semiclassical model for plasmon-enhanced high-harmonic
generation (HHG) in the vicinity of metal nanostructures. We show that both the
inhomogeneity of the enhanced local fields and electron absorption by the metal
surface play an important role in the HHG process and lead to the generation of
even harmonics and to a significantly increased cutoff. For the examples of
silver-coated nanocones and bowtie antennas we predict that the required
intensity reduces by up to three orders of magnitudes and the HHG cutoff
increases by more than a factor of two. The study of the enhanced high-harmonic
generation is connected with a finite-element simulation of the electric field
enhancement due to the excitation of the plasmonic modes.Comment: 4 figure
A framework for molecular biology databases integration using context graph keying.
This paper proposed a novel framework for integrating public domain molecular biology databases with the aid of a context graph. A context graph is used to map data in order to establish an integration domain for the participating multi-resource database federation. Data are presented in a consolidated form upon retrieval from the multiple databases. The approach presented in this paper is novel in the sense that, it can be implemented within a component database and can initiate data consolidation collected from multiple sources without users' intervention. The approach has received considerable interest from the research community
Theoretical flow characteristics of inlets for tilting-nacelle VTOL aircraft
The results of a theoretical investigation of geometric variables for lift-cruise-fan, tilting nacelle inlets operating at high incidence angles are presented. These geometric variables are investigated for their effects on surface static to free stream pressure ratio, and the separation parameters of maximum to diffuser exit surface velocity ratio and maximum surface Mach number for low speed operating conditions. The geometric parameters varied were the internal lip contraction ratio, external forebody to diffuser exit diameter ratio external forebody length to diameter ratio and internal lip major to minor axis ratio
Aerodynamic analysis of several high throat Mach number inlets for the quiet clean short-haul experimental engine
The results of an analytical study to investigate internal and external surface Mach numbers on several inlet geometries for possible application to the nacelle of the Quiet Clean Short-Haul Experimental Engine (QCSEE) are presented. The effects of external forebody geometry and internal lip geometry were illustrated at both low-speed and cruise conditions. Boundary-layer analyses were performed on several geometries to determine if lip flow separation might exist. The results indicated that inner-surface Mach number level and gradient could be reduced with inlets at a 50 deg incidence angle by blunting the external forebody geometry. The external Mach numbers at cruise conditions indicated that a compromise in the external forebody bluntness might be required to satisfy both low-speed and cruise conditions. For a fixed value of bluntness parameter, no lip flow separation was indicated for the 1.46- and 1.57-area-contraction-ratio inlets at low-speed conditions. However, a lip separation condition was obtained with the 1.37-contraction-ratio inlet. The QCSEE nacelle design takeoff operating condition (incidence angle of 50 deg and free-stream Mach number of 0.12) resulted in higher peak surface Mach numbers than the design crosswind (incidence angle of 90 deg and free-stream Mach number of 0.05) or static condition
