    Study of application of space telescope science operations software for SIRTF use

    The design and development of the Space Telescope Science Operations Ground System (ST SOGS) was evaluated to compile a history of lessons learned that would benefit NASA's Space Infrared Telescope Facility (SIRTF). Forty-nine specific recommendations resulted and were categorized as follows: (1) requirements: a discussion of the content, timeliness and proper allocation of the system and segment requirements and the resulting impact on SOGS development; (2) science instruments: a consideration of the impact of the Science Instrument design and data streams on SOGS software; and (3) contract phasing: an analysis of the impact of beginning the various ST program segments at different times. Approximately half of the software design and source code might be useable for SIRTF. Transportability of this software requires, at minimum, a compatible DEC VAX-based architecture and VMS operating system, system support software similar to that developed for SOGS, and continued evolution of the SIRTF operations concept and requirements such that they remain compatible with ST SOGS operation

    Advanced ceramic coating development for industrial/utility gas turbines

    A program was conducted with the objective of developing advanced thermal barrier coating (TBC) systems. Coating application was by plasma spray. Duplex, triplex and graded coatings were tested. Coating systems incorporated both NiCrAly and CoCrAly bond coats. Four ceramic overlays were tested: ZrO2.82O3; CaO.TiO2; 2CaO.SiO2; and MgO.Al2O3. The best overall results were obtained with a CaO.TiO2 coating applied to a NiCrAly bond coat. This coating was less sensitive than the ZrO2.8Y2O3 coating to process variables and part geometry. Testing with fuels contaminated with compounds containing sulfur, phosphorus and alkali metals showed the zirconia coatings were destabilized. The calcium titanate coatings were not affected by these contaminants. However, when fuels were used containing 50 ppm of vanadium and 150 ppm of magnesium, heavy deposits were formed on the test specimens and combustor components that required frequent cleaning of the test rig. During the program Mars engine first-stage turbine blades were coated and installed for an engine cyclic endurance run with the zirconia, calcium titanate, and calcium silicate coatings. Heavy spalling developed with the calcium silicate system. The zirconia and calcium titanate systems survived the full test duration. It was concluded that these two TBC's showed potential for application in gas turbines

    Internally coated air-cooled gas turbine blading

    Ten candidate modified nickel-aluminide coatings were developed using the slip pack process. These coatings contain additives such as silicon, chromium and columbium in a nickel-aluminum coating matrix with directionally solidified MAR-M200 + Hf as the substrate alloy. Following a series of screening tests which included strain tolerance, dynamic oxidation and hot corrosion testing, the Ni-19A1-1Cb (nominal composition) coating was selected for application to the internal passages of four first-stage turbine blades. Process development results indicate that a dry pack process is suitable for internal coating application resulting in 18 percent or less reduction in air flow. Coating uniformity, based on coated air-cooled blades, was within + or - 20 percent. Test results show that the presence of additives (silicon, chromium or columbium) appeared to improve significantly the ductility of the NiA1 matrix. However, the environmental resistance of these modified nickel-aluminides were generally inferior to the simple aluminides

    Forty-one material systems were evaluated for potential use in turbine blade tip seal applications at 1370 C. Both ceramic blade tip inserts and abradable ceramic tip shoes were tested. Hot gas erosion, impact resistance, thermal stability, and dynamic rub performance were the criteria used in rating the various materials. Silicon carbide and silicon nitride were used, both as blade tips and abradables. The blade tip inserts were fabricated by hot pressing while low density and honeycomb abradables were sintered or reaction bonded

    Evaluation of coatings for cobalt- and nickel-base superalloys, volume 2

    The final results of an oxidation-reduction rig evaluation of aluminide coatings are presented, as applied to 1N-100 and B1900 nickel-base and X-10 and WI-52 cobalt-base alloys. Burner rigs were used which operated on JP-5 fuel and air, producing a gas velocity of 0.85 (2000 to 2500 ft/sec) at the specimen's leading edge. One-hour heating cycles were used with three minutes of air blast cooling. Results of testing at temperatures ranging from T sub max of 1850 to 2050 F indicate that coated B1900 has the longest oxidation life at all temperatures, followed by IN-100X-40WI-52, based on a weight change criterion. Coatings on nickel-base alloys provided more than twice the life of coating on cobalt-base alloys at comparable temperatures. The coatings with higher aluminum content and comparable thickness had longer lives. Silicon appeared to be a beneficial additive in the nickel-base alloy coatings for long term, low temperature life, but not for short term, high temperature performance. Chromium was identified in all coatings. Extrapolating the life results obtained to 1600 F, all the selected coatings on the four alloys would be protective for at least 10,000 hours

The collective agreement provided that Supervisors will not do work ordinarily performed by bargain­ing unit employees, except — (a) Instruction and training of employees. (b) Emergency work necessary to maintain an uninterrupted flow of production. Held, by a majority of the board of arbitration, W. Stetson dissenting, the grievance was dismissed. Inventory taking is not work ordinarily performed by bargaining unit employees . While some of the regular operations of the grieving bargaining unit employees may have been performed incidentally to the inventory taking, this does not mean that supervisors on performing this type of task have infringed upon the grievors\u27 jobs.     Advanced high temperature static strain sensor development

    An examination was made into various techniques to be used to measure static strain in gas turbine liners at temperatures up to 1150 K (1600 F). The methods evaluated included thin film and wire resistive devices, optical fibers, surface acoustic waves, the laser speckle technique with a heterodyne readout, optical surface image and reflective approaches and capacitive devices. A preliminary experimental program to develop a thin film capacitive device was dropped because calculations showed that it would be too sensitive to thermal gradients. In a final evaluation program, the laser speckle technique appeared to work well up to 1150 K when it was used through a relatively stagnant air path. The surface guided acoustic wave approach appeared to be interesting but to require too much development effort for the funds available. Efforts to develop a FeCrAl resistive strain gage system were only partially successful and this part of the effort was finally reduced to a characterization study of the properties of the 25 micron diameter FeCrAl (Kanthal A-1) wire. It was concluded that this particular alloy was not suitable for use as the resistive element in a strain gage above about 1000 K
