    Family–School Partnerships and the Missing Voice of Parents

    Educators, researchers, advocates, and others agree that effective family-school partnership is an important component in best supporting the academic outcomes and future success of students. However, schools and educators struggle in forming constructive partnerships with racially and economically marginalized and oppressed parents and families, particularly low-income Black parents and families. This compromises support for low-income Black students that are already served in underfunded and under-resourced schools compared to their White middleclass counterparts. Further, this phenomenon exacerbates a widely understood academic achievement gap between low-income Black students and White middleclass students. In seeking to unearth and better understand effective strategies and practices within family-school partnerships with low-income Black families in the hopes of improving them, most research and literature highlights the voice and perspective of school leadership, social workers, school psychologists and other professionals. A critical voiced missing in this discussion is that of the parents themselves. This study aims to highlight and bring their much-needed perspective to the conversation. Employing in-depth, semi-structured interviews during the academic years of 2014-2015 and 2015-2016, this research gives insight and perspective into the family-school partnership experiences of twelve (12) low-income Black parents whose children were in the 3rdor 4th-grade at a public elementary school in New York City. Thematic analysis of the data revealed two main areas of focus within the family-school partnerships described: Relationships Within Family-School Partnerships and Influences Within Family-School Partnerships. Further, within each theme, four spheres of relationship (parent-child, parent-school, parent-principal, parent-teacher) and four spheres of influence (on-site school-based support program; parent manifested belief in parents\u27 role in education; parent knowledge and opinion of teaching strategies and curriculum, and larger education system; race and ethnicity) were revealed. In addition, the data analysis showed the commitment, knowledge, and energy that the parents interviewed brought to their relationship with and to the school, as well as the constructive power that school leadership harnessed in actively seeking relationship and partnership steeped in honesty, trust, passion, and belief in and for the parents and families that they served. Finally, the study supported previous authors’ contentions for the inclusion of family home-based activities within models and frameworks of family-school partnership as well as revealed avenues for practice and future research towards the goal of strengthening family-school partnerships in support of best outcomes for students and their families

    Bone mineral density and risk of heart failure in older adults: The Cardiovascular Health Study

    Background Despite increasing evidence of a common link between bone and heart health, the relationship between bone mineral density ( BMD ) and heart failure ( HF ) risk remains insufficiently studied. Methods and Results We investigated whether BMD measured by dual‐energy x‐ray absorptiometry was associated with incident HF in an older cohort. Cox models were stratified by sex and interactions of BMD with race assessed. BMD was examined at the total hip and femoral neck separately, both continuously and by World Health Organization categories. Of 1250 participants, 442 (55% women) developed HF during the median follow‐up of 10.5 years. In both black and nonblack women, neither total hip nor femoral neck BMD was significantly associated with HF ; there was no significant interaction by race. In black and nonblack men, total hip, but not femoral neck, BMD was significantly associated with HF , with evidence of an interaction by race. In nonblack men, lower total hip BMD was associated with higher HF risk (hazard ratio, 1.13 [95% CI, 1.01–1.26] per 0.1 g/cm 2 decrement), whereas in black men, lower total hip BMD was associated with lower HF risk (hazard ratio, 0.74 [95% CI, 0.59–0.94]). There were no black men with total hip osteoporosis. Among nonblack men, total hip osteoporosis was associated with higher HF risk (hazard ratio, 2.83 [95% CI, 1.39–5.74]) compared with normal BMD . Conclusions Among older adults, lower total hip BMD was associated with higher HF risk in nonblack men but lower risk in black men, with no evidence of an association in women. Further research is needed to replicate these findings and to study potential underlying pathways. </jats:sec

    Latina/o adolescents in an emerging immigrant community: A qualitative exploration of their future goals.

    Although immigrant adolescents typically have high hopes for their futures, educational and career outcomes often do not match aspirations. The future aspirations of 17 Latina/o adolescents in an emerging immigrant community were explored. Qualitative interviews were conducted and analyzed using consensual qualitative research methodology (CQR). Interviews focused on goals for education/career and supports and barriers to reaching those goals. Overall, students expressed high aspirations but were unclear on how to achieve them. Family members and school personnel were seen as supportive, but with limitations. Barriers mentioned by most participants included early pregnancy, finances, and circumstances beyond their control; they declined to endorse other barriers when prompted. Students also held less optimistic views of the educational and career possibilities of an “average” Latina/o/a as compared to their own goals, which is framed in terms of stereotypes. A clear theme emerged where students placed the primary responsibility for their success or failure on themselves without acknowledging many barriers in the environment. Findings are discussed from a social justice point of view with implications that pertain to provision of college planning information, context for applying it, affective support, and systemic advocacy

    Electrical Stimulation Modulates High γ Activity and Human Memory Performance.

    Direct electrical stimulation of the brain has emerged as a powerful treatment for multiple neurological diseases, and as a potential technique to enhance human cognition. Despite its application in a range of brain disorders, it remains unclear how stimulation of discrete brain areas affects memory performance and the underlying electrophysiological activities. Here, we investigated the effect of direct electrical stimulation in four brain regions known to support declarative memory: hippocampus (HP), parahippocampal region (PH) neocortex, prefrontal cortex (PF), and lateral temporal cortex (TC). Intracranial EEG recordings with stimulation were collected from 22 patients during performance of verbal memory tasks. We found that high γ (62-118 Hz) activity induced by word presentation was modulated by electrical stimulation. This modulatory effect was greatest for trials with poor memory encoding. The high γ modulation correlated with the behavioral effect of stimulation in a given brain region: it was negative, i.e., the induced high γ activity was decreased, in the regions where stimulation decreased memory performance, and positive in the lateral TC where memory enhancement was observed. Our results suggest that the effect of electrical stimulation on high γ activity induced by word presentation may be a useful biomarker for mapping memory networks and guiding therapeutic brain stimulation

    Culicidae (Diptera) en un Área Rural del Chaco Seco, Argentina

    Con el objetivo de estudiar algunos aspectos ecológicos de mosquitos en la región fitogeográfica del Chaco Seco, se realizó un estudio entre febrero y diciembre de 2007 en Misión Nueva Pompeya, Provincia del Chaco. Se seleccionaron tres parajes: "Fortín Arenales", "Los Pozos" y "Nueva Población". En cada paraje se seleccionaron tres estaciones de captura: extradomicilio (correspondiente a un bosque distante entre 90 y 110 m del domicilio), peridomicilio (representado por el corral distante hasta 10 m del domicilio) e intradomicilio (representado por las viviendas de los pobladores). Se determinaron 21 especies de mosquitos, correspondientes a 8 géneros. Se estimó el Índice de Abundancia de Especies (IAE) y la diversidad específica de cada uno de los parajes y de las estaciones de captura. Se realizó además un análisis de "clusters" para comparar los tres parajes y las tres estaciones de captura en cuanto a abundancia y diversidad de especies halladas. Las especies más abundantes fueron Mansonia titillans (Walker), Uranotaenia apicalis (Theobald) y Anopheles triannulatus (Neiva y Pinto). En cuanto a la estacionalidad, las capturas mensuales revelaron una estación con poca o casi nula presencia de mosquitos (estación seca) y un período con mayor abundancia, riqueza y diversidad de especies (estación lluviosa)

    Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Risk of Posttraumatic Stress and Related Disorders: A Prospective Longitudinal Evaluation in U.S. Army Soldiers

    Crossâ sectional associations between attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have been observed, but longitudinal studies assessing this association are lacking. This prospective study evaluated the association between predeployment ADHD and postdeployment PTSD among U.S. Army soldiers. Soldiers who deployed to Afghanistan were surveyed before deployment (T0) and approximately 1 month (T1), 3 months (T2), and 9 months (T3) after their return. Logistic regression was performed to estimate the association between predeployment ADHD and postdeployment (T2 or T3) PTSD among 4,612 soldiers with data at all waves and no record of stimulant medication treatment during the study. To evaluate specificity of the ADHDâ PTSD association, we examined associations among predeployment ADHD, postdeployment major depressive episode (MDE), generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), and suicidal ideation. Weighted prevalence of ADHD predeployment was 6.1% (SE = 0.4%). Adjusting for other risk factors, predeployment ADHD was associated with risk of postdeployment PTSD, adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 2.13, 95% CI [1.51, 3.00], p < .001, including incidence among soldiers with no predeployment history of PTSD, AOR = 2.50, 95% CI [1.69, 3.69], p < .001. ADHD was associated with postdeployment MDE, AOR = 2.80, 95% CI [2.01, 3.91], p < .001, and GAD, AOR = 3.04, 95% CI [2.10, 4.42], p < .001, but not suicidal ideation. Recognition of associations between predeployment ADHD and postdeployment PTSD, MDE, and GAD may inform targeted prevention efforts.     Room-Temperature Distance Measurements of Immobilized Spin-Labeled Protein by DEER/PELDOR

    Nitroxide spin labels are used for double electron-electron resonance (DEER) measurements of distances between sites in biomolecules. Rotation of gem-dimethyls in commonly used nitroxides causes spin echo dephasing times (Tm) to be too short to perform DEER measurements at temperatures between ∼80 and 295 K, even in immobilized samples. A spirocyclohexyl spin label has been prepared that has longer Tm between 80 and 295 K in immobilized samples than conventional labels. Two of the spirocyclohexyl labels were attached to sites on T4 lysozyme introduced by site-directed spin labeling. Interspin distances up to ∼4 nm were measured by DEER at temperatures up to 160 K in water/glycerol glasses. In a glassy trehalose matrix the Tm for the doubly labeled T4 lysozyme was long enough to measure an interspin distance of 3.2 nm at 295 K, which could not be measured for the same protein labeled with the conventional 1-oxyl-2,2,5,5-tetramethyl-3-pyrroline-3- (methyl)methanethio-sulfonate label
