The effects of a taped-problems intervention on multiplication fact fluency of fourth grade title I math students

The purpose of this action research study was to increase multiplication fact fluency for a small class of fourth grade students by implementing an efficient intervention model. The research question was: What are the effects of a Taped-Problems (TP) intervention on multiplication fact fluency of fourth grade Title I math students? This study applied a quantitative, quasiexperimental, one-group pretest-posttest design. To test the effect TP intervention had on student multiplication fact fluency, mean DCM scores on baseline assessment probes were compared to mean DCM scores on maintenance assessment probes with a two-tailed dependent t-test. For two of the three problem sets, the maintenance mean DCM scores increased significantly over the baseline mean DCM scores. Furthermore, analysis of individual student mean DCM scores indicated an increase from either frustration level to instructional level or instructional level to mastery level (Deno & Mirkin, 1977). The data moderately supported the hypothesis that TP intervention affected student multiplication fact fluency. Based on the results of this study, further research would be merited on examining the number of intervention sessions as related to sustained maintenance DCM scores. It would also be advantageous for future research to investigate the effects of efficiency modifications such as training students or developing computer software for independent administration of the TP intervention

Payment in the Polity: Funded Community Writing Projects

In this collaborative essay Audrey Simango, Matthew Stadler, and Alison Turner--Reader/Advisor/Editors (RAEs) at The GOAT PoL--explore the subject of money. Most discussions about money have focused on debates over compensation of research subjects (Snow et al. 54), or connections between community writing and well-funded projects, such as the Federal Writers Project of the 1930s (Mutnick). After providing context for The GOAT PoL, we reflect on the way our small payments to participants shift our relationships. We ask: 1) How does the exchange of money on The GOAT PoL affect the RAE\u27s experience of reading, editing, and advising authors? 2) How do the challenges we encounter by paying authors make visible what we thought we knew about power and privilege across international writing projects?; and 3) Is it possible for the exchange of money--with its unpredictable impacts--to expand and deepen, rather than shrink and diminish, the polity of literature

Genome-wide analysis reveals PADI4 cooperates with Elk-1 to activate c-Fos expression in breast cancer cells.

Peptidylarginine deiminase IV (PADI4) catalyzes the conversion of positively charged arginine and methylarginine residues to neutrally charged citrulline, and this activity has been linked to the repression of a limited number of target genes. To broaden our knowledge of the regulatory potential of PADI4, we utilized chromatin immunoprecipitation coupled with promoter tiling array (ChIP-chip) analysis to more comprehensively investigate the range of PADI4 target genes across the genome in MCF-7 breast cancer cells. Results showed that PADI4 is enriched in gene promoter regions near transcription start sites (TSSs); and, surprisingly, this pattern of binding is primarily associated with actively transcribed genes. Computational analysis found potential binding sites for Elk-1, a member of the ETS oncogene family, to be highly enriched around PADI4 binding sites; and coimmunoprecipitation analysis then confirmed that Elk-1 physically associates with PADI4. To better understand how PADI4 may facilitate gene transactivation, we then show that PADI4 interacts with Elk-1 at the c-Fos promoter and that, following Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF) stimulation, PADI4 catalytic activity facilitates Elk-1 phosphorylation, histone H4 acetylation, and c-Fos transcriptional activation. These results define a novel role for PADI4 as a transcription factor co-activator

We report on 318 patients with acute leukemia, receiving donor lymphocyte infusion (DLI) in complete hematologic remission (CHR) after allogeneic stem cell transplantation (alloSCT). DLI were applied preemptively (preDLI) for minimal residual disease (MRD, n = 23) or mixed chimerism (MC, n = 169), or as prophylaxis in high-risk patients with complete chimerism and molecular remission (proDLI, n = 126). Median interval from alloSCT to DLI1 was 176 days, median follow-up was 7.0 years. Five-year cumulative relapse incidence (CRI), non-relapse mortality (NRM), leukemia-free and overall survival (LFS/OS) of the entire cohort were 29.1%, 12.7%, 58.2%, and 64.3%. Cumulative incidences of acute graft-versus-host disease (aGvHD) grade II–IV°/chronic GvHD were 11.9%/31%. Nineteen patients (6%) died from DLI-induced GvHD. Age ≥60 years (p = 0.046), advanced stage at transplantation (p = 0.003), shorter interval from transplantation (p = 0.018), and prior aGvHD ≥II° (p = 0.036) were risk factors for DLI-induced GvHD. GvHD did not influence CRI, but was associated with NRM and lower LFS/OS. Efficacy of preDLI was demonstrated by decreasing MRD/increasing blood counts in 71%, and increasing chimerism in 70%. Five-year OS after preDLI for MRD/MC was 51%/68% among responders, and 37% among non-responders. The study describes response and outcome of DLI in CHR and helps to identify candidates without increased risk of severe GvHD

The Ascent of the Abundant: How Mutational Networks Constrain Evolution

    Get PDF
Evolution by natural selection is fundamentally shaped by the fitness landscapes in which it occurs. Yet fitness landscapes are vast and complex, and thus we know relatively little about the long-range constraints they impose on evolutionary dynamics. Here, we exhaustively survey the structural landscapes of RNA molecules of lengths 12 to 18 nucleotides, and develop a network model to describe the relationship between sequence and structure. We find that phenotype abundance—the number of genotypes producing a particular phenotype—varies in a predictable manner and critically influences evolutionary dynamics. A study of naturally occurring functional RNA molecules using a new structural statistic suggests that these molecules are biased toward abundant phenotypes. This supports an “ascent of the abundant” hypothesis, in which evolution yields abundant phenotypes even when they are not the most fit
