Spectral effects of dehydration on phyllosilicates
Six phyllosilicates were progressively dehydrated under controlled conditions in an effort to study the spectral effects of their dehydration. The spectra obtained at each level of hydration provide information that may be used in future spectroscopic observations of the planets, as well as a data set which compliments the existing body of terrestrial soil knowledge
The interaction energy of well-separated Skyrme solitons
We prove that the asymptotic field of a Skyrme soliton of any degree has a
non-trivial multipole expansion. It follows that every Skyrme soliton has a
well-defined leading multipole moment. We derive an expression for the linear
interaction energy of well-separated Skyrme solitons in terms of their leading
multipole moments. This expression can always be made negative by suitable
rotations of one of the Skyrme solitons in space and iso-space.We show that the
linear interaction energy dominates for large separation if the orders of the
Skyrme solitons' multipole moments differ by at most two. In that case there
are therefore always attractive forces between the Skyrme solitons.Comment: 27 pages amslate
Mining Missing Hyperlinks from Human Navigation Traces: A Case Study of Wikipedia
Hyperlinks are an essential feature of the World Wide Web. They are
especially important for online encyclopedias such as Wikipedia: an article can
often only be understood in the context of related articles, and hyperlinks
make it easy to explore this context. But important links are often missing,
and several methods have been proposed to alleviate this problem by learning a
linking model based on the structure of the existing links. Here we propose a
novel approach to identifying missing links in Wikipedia. We build on the fact
that the ultimate purpose of Wikipedia links is to aid navigation. Rather than
merely suggesting new links that are in tune with the structure of existing
links, our method finds missing links that would immediately enhance
Wikipedia's navigability. We leverage data sets of navigation paths collected
through a Wikipedia-based human-computation game in which users must find a
short path from a start to a target article by only clicking links encountered
along the way. We harness human navigational traces to identify a set of
candidates for missing links and then rank these candidates. Experiments show
that our procedure identifies missing links of high quality
Plio-Pleistocene time-averaged field in southern Patagonia recorded in lava flows
Paleomagnetic directions were obtained from stepwise alternating-field or thermal demagnetization of 53 lava flows from southern Patagonia (latitudes 49.5°-52.1 °S) that include the Pali-Aike volcanic field and the Meseta Viscachas plateau lavas. In addition to previous Miocene-late Quaternary ages of these flows, 40Ar/39Ar dates spanning from 0.1 to 15.4 Ma were obtained for 17 of the sites. All except one of the magnetic polarities coincide with the expected polarities of the magnetic polarity timescale [Cande and Kent, 1995] for the obtained 40Ar/39Ar ages. The mean direction from 33 sites (eliminating sites <4 Ma) that pass a selection criteria of α95 â€5° is Dec = 358.7°,Inc = - 68.2°, α95 = 3.5°, a value that coincides within the statistical uncertainty with the direction of the geocentric axial dipole for that area (Inc = - 68.1°). Likewise, the mean virtual geomagnetic pole (VGP) coincides within the statistical uncertainty with the geographic North Pole. The secular variation described by the VGP angular standard deviation for these sites is 17.1°, a value expected for that latitude according to Model G of paleosecular variation [McFadden et al., 1988]. The characteristics of the data presented are optimum for time-averaged field (TAF) studies because of the good age control and good quality of the paleomagnetic data: (1) primary components of magnetization were obtained using principal component analysis [Kirschvink, 1980] from at least five points and maximum angular deviation â€5°, (2) site means were calculated with Fisher statistics using at least three samples, and (c) 38 of the 53 flows had α95 †5°. Langevin Trajectories between Fixed Concentrations
We consider the trajectories of particles diffusing between two infinite
baths of fixed concentrations connected by a channel, e.g. a protein channel of
a biological membrane. The steady state influx and efflux of Langevin
trajectories at the boundaries of a finite volume containing the channel and
parts of the two baths is replicated by termination of outgoing trajectories
and injection according to a residual phase space density. We present a
simulation scheme that maintains averaged fixed concentrations without creating
spurious boundary layers, consistent with the assumed physics

The role of higher meson resonances with spin 1 and 2 is investigated
quantitatively in the decay processes of and
. Among the higher resonances, we find that the
tensor meson can give a nontrivial contribution especially to the
decay process. When the contribution is
combined with the processes involving the vector and scalar meson intermediate
states, a good agreement with the recent measurements is achieved for both
decays. The effect of the is found to be sizable at the
intermediate photon energies and may be verified by precise measurements of the
recoil photon spectrum of the decay. The
dependence of the decay widths on various models for the - mixing

Coupling Manure Injection with Cover Crops to Enhance Nutrient Cycling
Large-scale hog (Sus scroja) production is a major agricultural enterprise in the Midwest. Large numbers of confined hogs produce about 50 million tons per year of swine manure in Iowa alone. Rapid expansion of concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) has resulted in increased concentrations of manure nutrients in surface waters which contribute about 15% of the total nitrate load in the Mississippi River Basin. Producers are being encouraged to develop manure management practices that fulfill crop production requirements, while minimizing the potential for environmental pollution. The most commonly used manure management practice in the Midwest involves fall application to land where corn (Zea mays L.) will be grown in the subsequent growing season. Fall planted annual cover crops can capture manure nutrients and immobilize them in plant biomass, subsequently reducing the potential for nutrient loss through run-off or leaching. Decomposition of cover crop residue the following spring may help synchronize manure N availability and corn N uptake, improving nutrient-use efficiency within the crop rotation

Long-Term Response and Remission with Pixantrone in Patients with Relapsed or Refractory Aggressive Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma: Post-Hoc Analysis of the Multicenter, Open-Label, Randomized PIX301 Trial.
BACKGROUND: Pixantrone is recommended in relapsed and refractory non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) or heavily pretreated NHL patients. Its conditional approval in Europe was based on results from the open-label, randomized, phase 3 PIX301 study, comparing pixantrone monotherapy with physician's choice of treatment in 140 patients with relapsed or refractory aggressive NHL. METHODS: This post-hoc analysis of the PIX301 study investigated possible correlations between patient characteristics and clinical response in 17 patients (24%) treated with pixantrone who achieved a complete response (CR) or an unconfirmed complete response (CRu) at study end. RESULTS: These patients (10 male and 7 female) had a median age of 61 (range 41-75) years, and the most common diagnoses were diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (n = 10) and transformed indolent lymphoma (n = 4). Most had received two prior lines of therapy (n = 12). There was wide variation in the time from diagnosis to study entry (219-4777 days). Among the 17 patients who achieved a CR/CRu with pixantrone, 6 had stable or progressive disease as a response to their last regimen, 7 had a partial response, and 4 had a CR/CRu. Four patients from the pixantrone group survived without progression for more than 400 days. Prior response to previous therapies did not appear to affect long-term response to pixantrone. CONCLUSIONS: These observations suggest that pixantrone monotherapy in patients with multiply relapsed or refractory aggressive NHL who had received at least two prior therapies can be associated with durable responses and long-term remission, and this may be unrelated to the clinical response to the last therapy
