German and Romance varieties in contact in northeastern Italy

    Get PDF
Northeastern Italy offers several sites where a variety of German is in contact with Italian, Italo-Romance, or Rhaeto-Romance: All of these contact situations vary according to sociolinguistic and extralinguistic factors, such as the composition of the speech community, structure of linguistic repertoires, language status, standardization, and demography. These factors combine into more or less coherent speech community types that, in turn, constrain the typology of contact linguistic phenomena that can be observed. In this contribution, based on the trilingual region of South Tyrol, a few emblematic case studies will be discussed focusing on insertional mechanisms that occur in speech. Based on the outcomes of a larger research project and drawing on various corpora of conversational data, quantitative and qualitative aspects of this contact situation will be explored in more detail

Attic honey: fame, evidence and connection with the funerary sphere

Prized Attic honey is an often-neglected topic in studies of Athenian productions, despite the considerable spread of production, as attested by archaeological finds of terracotta beehives throughout the territory. Literary sources also frequently mention honey produced in Attica, especially the most famous and prized variety from Mount Hymettus. In this paper, after a mention of the peculiarity of the traditions about honey in the classical world, the importance and fame of the Attic product is emphasised. The sources that praise the product are here classified in three groups, namely the authors who focus on its sweetness and fragrance, the ones who describe Attic honey generically in relation to its prestige and the sources which compares it to honey from other regions. Afterwards, my further goal is to assess the possible connection between honey and the funerary sphere in Attica. This relation is explored also through the reanalysis of some interpretations proposed for a fictile group of geometric Attic models.

Investigating γ\gamma-ray halos around three HAWC bright sources in Fermi-LAT data

Numerous extended sources around Galactic pulsars have shown significant γ\gamma-ray emission from GeV to TeV energies, revealing hundreds of TeV energy electrons scattering off of the underlying photon fields through inverse Compton scattering (ICS). HAWC TeV gamma-ray observations of few-degree extended emission around the pulsars Geminga and Monogem, and LAT GeV emission around Geminga, suggest that systems older than 100 kyr have multi-TeV e±e^\pm propagating beyond the SNR-PWN system into the interstellar medium. Following the discovery of few γ\gamma-ray sources by HAWC at energies E>100>100~TeV, we investigate the presence of an extended γ\gamma-ray emission in Fermi-LAT data around the three brightest sources detected by HAWC up to 100 TeV. We find an extended emission of θ68=1.00−0.07+0.05\theta_{68} = 1.00^{+0.05}_{-0.07} deg around eHWC J1825-134 and θ68=0.71±0.10\theta_{68} = 0.71\pm0.10 deg eHWC J1907+063. The analysis with ICS templates on Fermi-LAT data point to diffusion coefficient values which are significantly lower than the average Galactic one. When studied along with HAWC data, the γ\gamma-ray Fermi-LAT data provide invaluable insight into the very high-energy electron and positron parent populations.Comment: 18 pages and 11 figures. The impact of visiting the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) on children's and adolescents' psychological well-being: A systematic review

    Get PDF
Abstract Objectives The visits of children/adolescents in adult intensive care units are increasingly more common. However, few studies examine the psychological impact of visiting. This systematic review aims to summarise the psychological effects that visiting family members has on children/adolescents. Research methodology A systematic review of research articles published from 1990 to January 2021 was conducted using PsycInfo, PubMed, and CINAHL. Inclusion/exclusion criteria were applied. Those studies included were evaluated using the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal tools. A narrative synthesis of the results was conducted. Setting Adult intensive care unit. Results The review identified five studies (three of which qualitative), involving 141 children/adolescents. Although the experience of visiting was potentially traumatic, it enabled children/adolescents to better understand the reality and to preserve their relationships with family members. The impact of visiting was influenced by individual characteristics (e.g., age, past traumatic experiences) and by organisational characteristics (e.g., facilitated visit or not). Regardless of visitation, most children/adolescents presented anxiety and depression symptoms that need to be addressed. Conclusions Child/adolescent visitation seems to have positive effects, provided there is preparation and facilitation. Clinicians should pay attention to individual characteristics and optimise organisational factors (e.g., environment) in order to minimise potentially trauma-inducing aspects

Prevalence of tracheobronchomalacia and excessive dynamic airway collapse in bronchial asthma of different severity

BACKGROUND: Tracheobronchomalacia (TBM) is a pathologic condition in which softening of tracheal and bronchial cartilage causes the dynamic narrowing of transverse or sagittal diameters of tracheobronchial lumen; an excessive dynamic airway collapse (EDAC) may also be associated, with a substantial invagination of the posterior membrane of trachebronchial tree. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of both TBM and EDAC in a population of asthmatics with different degrees of disease severity compared to a reference group of subjects without any bronchial obstruction. METHODS: A cohort of 202 asthmatics was investigated by means of a dynamic flexible videobronchoscopy: 74 mild persistent (MPA - age 18–68 ys; 35 males; mean FEV(1) = 88.6% pred. ± 8.3 sd); 63 moderate (MA - age 21–71 ys; 30 males; mean FEV(1) = 71.3% pred. ± 9.1 sd), 65 severe asthmatics (SA - age 33–70 ys; 25 males; mean FEV(1) = 48.5% pred. ± 7.6 sd), and 62 non obstructed subjects (NO - age 18–71 ys; 38 males; mean FEV(1) 98.6% pred. ± 2.7 sd). TBM and EDAC were classified according to FEMOS classification. RESULTS: TBM and EDAC were observed in only 1/62 subjects (both 1.61%) of NO group, while their prevalence was 2.70% and 6.75% in MPA group; 7.93% and 19.04% in MA group; 18.46% and 69.23% in SA group, respectively. The crude prevalence of thyroid disorders in the population was 12.9%. In particular, the prevalence of thyroid disorders was significantly higher in females than in men, but 54-fold higher in females than in men in the presence of EDAC. CONCLUSIONS: 1) The prevalence of both TBM and EDAC is directly related to age, gender (females), and asthma severity; 2) EDAC is much more frequent than TBM in all asthma patients; 3) both tracheal abnormalities proved to be more represented in asthmatics with thyroid disorders, and particularly in female asthmatics with EDAC
