Deep, wide-field, multi-band imaging of z approximately equal to 0.4 clusters and their environs
The existence of an excess population of blue galaxies in the cores of distant, rich clusters of galaxies, commonly referred to as the 'Butcher-Oemler' effect is now well established. Spectroscopy of clusters at z = 0.2-0.4 has confirmed that the luminous blue populations comprise as much as 20 percent of these clusters. This fraction is much higher that the 2 percent blue fraction found for nearby rich clusters, such as Coma, indicating that rapid galaxy evolution has occurred on a relatively short time scale. Spectroscopy has also shown that the 'blue' galaxies can basically be divided into three classes: 'starburst' galaxies with large (O II) equivalent widths, 'post-starburst' E+A galaxies (i.e. galaxies with strong Balmer lines shortward of 4000A but elliptical-like colors, and normal spiral/irregulars. Unfortunately, it is difficult to obtain enough spectra of individual galaxies in these intermediate redshift clusters to say anything statistically meaningful. Thus, limited information is available about the relative numbers of these three classes of 'blue' galaxies and the associated E/SO population in these intermediate redshift clusters. More statistically meaningful results can be derived from deep imaging of these clusters. However, the best published data to date (e.g. MacLaren et al. 1988; Dressler & Gunn 1992) are limited to the cluster cores and do not sample the galaxy luminosity functions very deeply at the bluest wavelengths. Furthermore, only limited spectro-energy distribution data is available below 4000A in the observed cluster rest frame providing limited sensitivity to 'recent' star formation activity. To improve this situation, we are currently obtaining deep, wide-field UBRI images of all known rich clusters at z approx. equals 0.4. Our main objective is to obtain the necessary color information to distinguish between the E+SO, 'E+A', and spiral/irregular galaxy populations throughout the cluster/supercluster complex. At this redshift, UBRI correspond to rest-frame 2500A/UVR bandpasses. The rest-frame UVR system provides a powerful 'blue' galaxy discriminate given the expected color distribution. Moreover, since 'hot' stars peak near 2500A, that bandpass is a powerful probe of recent star formation activity in all classes of galaxies. In particular, it is sensitive to ellipticals with 'UV excess' populations (MacLaren et al. 1988)
A Mechanism Linking Two Known Vulnerability Factors for Alcohol Abuse: Heightened Alcohol Stimulation and Low Striatal Dopamine D2 Receptors
Alcohol produces both stimulant and sedative effects in humans and rodents. In humans, alcohol abuse disorder is associated with a higher stimulant and lower sedative responses to alcohol. Here, we show that this association is conserved in mice and demonstrate a causal link with another liability factor: low expression of striatal dopamine D2 receptors (D2Rs). Using transgenic mouse lines, we find that the selective loss of D2Rs on striatal medium spiny neurons enhances sensitivity to ethanol stimulation and generates resilience to ethanol sedation. These mice also display higher preference and escalation of ethanol drinking, which continues despite adverse outcomes. We find that striatal D1R activation is required for ethanol stimulation and that this signaling is enhanced in mice with low striatal D2Rs. These data demonstrate a link between two vulnerability factors for alcohol abuse and offer evidence for a mechanism in which low striatal D2Rs trigger D1R hypersensitivity, ultimately leading to compulsive-like drinkingFil: Bocarsly, Miriam E.. Followup Observations of SDSS and CRTS Candidate Cataclysmic Variables
We present photometry of 11 and spectroscopy of 35 potential cataclysmic
variables from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, the Catalina Real-Time Transient
Survey and vsnet-alerts. The photometry results include quasi-periodic
oscillations during the decline of V1363 Cyg, nightly accretion changes in the
likely Polar (AM Herculis binary) SDSS J1344+20, eclipses in SDSS J2141+05 with
an orbital period of 76+/-2 min, and possible eclipses in SDSS J2158+09 at an
orbital period near 100 min. Time-resolved spectra reveal short orbital periods
near 80 min for SDSS J0206+20, 85 min for SDSS J1502+33, and near 100 min for
CSS J0015+26, RXS J0150+37, SDSS J1132+62, SDSS J2154+15 and SDSS J2158+09. The
prominent HeII line and velocity amplitude of SDSS J2154+15 are consistent with
a Polar nature for this object, while the lack of this line and a low velocity
amplitude argue against this classification for RXS J0150+37. Single spectra of
10 objects were obtained near outburst and the rest near quiescence, confirming
the dwarf novae nature of these objects.Comment: 34 pages, 14 figures, in press at A
Displaying desire and distinction in housing
The article discusses the significance of cultural capital for the understanding of the field of housing in contemporary Britain. It explores the relationship between housing and the position of individuals in social space mapped out by means of a multiple correspondence analysis. It considers the material aspects of housing and the changing contexts that are linked to the creation and display of desire for social position and distinction expressed in talk about home decoration as personal expression and individuals' ideas of a `dream house'. It is based on an empirical investigation of taste and lifestyle using nationally representative survey data and qualitative interviews. The article shows both that personal resources and the imagination of home are linked to levels of cultural capital, and that rich methods of investigation are required to grasp the significance of these normally invisible assets to broaden the academic understanding of the field of housing in contemporary culture
The Na+/glucose cotransporters: from genes to therapy
Glucose enters eukaryotic cells via two types of membrane-associated carrier proteins, the Na+/glucose cotransporters (SGLT) and the facilitative glucose transporters (GLUT). The SGLT family consists of six members. Among them, the SGLT1 and SGLT2 proteins, encoded by the solute carrier genes SLC5A1 and SLC5A2, respectively, are believed to be the most important ones and have been extensively explored in studies focusing on glucose fluxes under both physiological and pathological conditions. This review considers the regulation of the expression of the SGLT promoted by protein kinases and transcription factors, as well as the alterations determined by diets of different compositions and by pathologies such as diabetes. It also considers congenital defects of sugar metabolism caused by aberrant expression of the SGLT1 in glucose-galactose malabsorption and the SGLT2 in familial renal glycosuria. Finally, it covers some pharmacological compounds that are being currently studied focusing on the interest of controlling glycemia by antagonizing SGLT in renal and intestinal tissues
Variability of Kepler Solar-Like Stars Harboring Small Exoplanets
We examine Kepler light-curve variability on habitable zone transit timescales for a large uniform sample of spectroscopically studied Kepler exoplanet host stars. The stars, taken from Everett et al., are solar-like in their properties and each harbors at least one exoplanet (or candidate) of radius ≤2.5 R_e. The variability timescale examined is typical for habitable zone planets orbiting solar-like stars and we note that the discovery of the smallest exoplanets (≤1.2 R_e with corresponding transit depths of less than ~0.18 mmag occur for the brightest and photometrically quietest stars. Thus, these detections are quite rare in Kepler observations. Some brighter and more evolved stars (subgiants), the latter of which often show large radial velocity jitter, are found to be among the photometrically quietest solar-like stars in our sample and the most likely small planet transit hunting grounds. The Sun is discussed as a solar-like star proxy to provide insight into the nature and cause of photometric variability. It is shown that Kepler's broad, visible light observations are insensitive to variability caused by chromospheric activity that may be present in the observed stars
Revised Stellar Properties of Kepler Targets for the Q1-17 (DR25) Transit Detection Run
The determination of exoplanet properties and occurrence rates using Kepler
data critically depends on our knowledge of the fundamental properties (such as
temperature, radius and mass) of the observed stars. We present revised stellar
properties for 197,096 Kepler targets observed between Quarters 1-17 (Q1-17),
which were used for the final transiting planet search run by the Kepler
Mission (Data Release 25, DR25). Similar to the Q1--16 catalog by Huber et al.
the classifications are based on conditioning published atmospheric parameters
on a grid of Dartmouth isochrones, with significant improvements in the adopted
methodology and over 29,000 new sources for temperatures, surface gravities or
metallicities. In addition to fundamental stellar properties the new catalog
also includes distances and extinctions, and we provide posterior samples for
each stellar parameter of each star. Typical uncertainties are ~27% in radius,
~17% in mass, and ~51% in density, which is somewhat smaller than previous
catalogs due to the larger number of improved logg constraints and the
inclusion of isochrone weighting when deriving stellar posterior distributions.
On average, the catalog includes a significantly larger number of evolved
solar-type stars, with an increase of 43.5% in the number of subgiants. We
discuss the overall changes of radii and masses of Kepler targets as a function

Sub-micrometer epitaxial Josephson junctions for quantum circuits
We present a fabrication scheme and testing results for epitaxial
sub-micrometer Josephson junctions. The junctions are made using a
high-temperature (1170 K) "via process" yielding junctions as small as 0.8 mu m
in diameter by use of optical lithography. Sapphire (Al2O3) tunnel-barriers are
grown on an epitaxial Re/Ti multilayer base-electrode. We have fabricated
devices with both Re and Al top electrodes. While room-temperature (295 K)
resistance versus area data are favorable for both types of top electrodes, the
low-temperature (50 mK) data show that junctions with the Al top electrode have
a much higher subgap resistance. The microwave loss properties of the junctions
have been measured by use of superconducting Josephson junction qubits. The
results show that high subgap resistance correlates to improved qubit
performance
