Agonal Writing: Towards an Agonal Model for Critical Transvaluation
This paper will examine the concept of „agonal culture‟ set out in Nietzsche's early essay Homer‟s Contest. The orientation is, in the first instance, hermeneutic: to what extent does agonal culture offer a fruitful model for Nietzsche's own writing? At its most ambitious, my claim is that the Greek agon, with its peculiar dynamic form, operates as a principle that organises and regulates Nietzsche's critical discourse. As a law of production governing Nietzsche's text, the agon allows us to make sense of Nietzsche's polemical style - of certain puzzling, yet recurrent features of his textual confrontations that tend to get ignored or written off as inessential. More importantly, however, it addresses certain key problems intrinsic to transvaluation itself; problems that threaten the coherence of Nietzsche's philosophical project.

Collective flow in central Au-Au collisions at 150, 250 and 400 A MeV
Radial collective flow and thermalization are studied in gold on gold
collisions at 150, 250 and 400 A MeV bombarding energies with a
relativistically covariant formulation of a QMD code. We find that radial flow
and "thermal" energies calculated for all the charged fragments agree
reasonably with the experimental values. The experimental hardware filter at
small angles used in the FOPI experiments at higher energies selects mainly the
thermalized particles.Comment: 4 pages with 4 EPS figures included. Version accepted for publication

Thermal phenomenology of hadrons from 200 AGeV S+S collisions
We develop a complete and consistent description for the hadron spectra from
heavy ion collisions in terms of a few collective variables, in particular
temperature, longitudinal and transverse flow. To achieve a meaningful
comparison with presently available data, we also include the resonance decays
into our picture. To disentangle the influences of transverse flow and
resonance decays in the -spectra, we analyse in detail the shape of the
-spectra.Comment: 31 pages, 13 figs in seperate uuencoded file, for LaTeX, epsf.sty and

Nuclear Matter Expansion Parameters from the Measurement of Differential Multiplicities for Lambda Production in Central Au+Au Collisions at AGS
The double differential multiplicities and rapidity distributions for Lambda
hyperon production in central Au+Au interactions at AGS in the range of
rapidities from 1.7 to 3.2 and the range of transverse kinetic energies from
0.0 to 0.7 GeV are parametrized in terms of the the Blast Wave approximation.
The longitudinal and transverse radial expansion parameters and the mean
temperature of Lambda hyperons after the freeze-out of the nuclear matter are
presented. The predictions of the RQMD model with and without mean field
potentials are compared to our data. Both variants of RQMD are parameterized in
terms of the Blast Wave model and the results of such parameterizations are
compared to the experimental ones. It is found that inclusion of the mean field
potentials in RQMD is essential to account for the strong expansion observed in
the data.Comment: 20 pages, LaTeX using elsart.sty, 10 encapsulated postscript figure
Search for Tensor, Vector, and Scalar Polarizations in the Stochastic Gravitational-Wave Background
The detection of gravitational waves with Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo has enabled novel tests of general relativity, including direct study of the polarization of gravitational waves. While general relativity allows for only two tensor gravitational-wave polarizations, general metric theories can additionally predict two vector and two scalar polarizations. The polarization of gravitational waves is encoded in the spectral shape of the stochastic gravitational-wave background, formed by the superposition of cosmological and individually unresolved astrophysical sources. Using data recorded by Advanced LIGO during its first observing run, we search for a stochastic background of generically polarized gravitational waves. We find no evidence for a background of any polarization, and place the first direct bounds on the contributions of vector and scalar polarizations to the stochastic background. Under log-uniform priors for the energy in each polarization, we limit the energy densities of tensor, vector, and scalar modes at 95% credibility to Ω0T<5.58×10-8, Ω0V<6.35×10-8, and Ω0S<1.08×10-7 at a reference frequency f0=25 Hz. © 2018 American Physical Society
On the progenitor of binary neutron star merger GW170817
On 2017 August 17 the merger of two compact objects with masses consistent with two neutron stars was discovered through gravitational-wave (GW170817), gamma-ray (GRB 170817A), and optical (SSS17a/AT 2017gfo) observations. The optical source was associated with the early-type galaxy NGC 4993 at a distance of just ∼40 Mpc, consistent with the gravitational-wave measurement, and the merger was localized to be at a projected distance of ∼2 kpc away from the galaxy's center. We use this minimal set of facts and the mass posteriors of the two neutron stars to derive the first constraints on the progenitor of GW170817 at the time of the second supernova (SN). We generate simulated progenitor populations and follow the three-dimensional kinematic evolution from binary neutron star (BNS) birth to the merger time, accounting for pre-SN galactic motion, for considerably different input distributions of the progenitor mass, pre-SN semimajor axis, and SN-kick velocity. Though not considerably tight, we find these constraints to be comparable to those for Galactic BNS progenitors. The derived constraints are very strongly influenced by the requirement of keeping the binary bound after the second SN and having the merger occur relatively close to the center of the galaxy. These constraints are insensitive to the galaxy's star formation history, provided the stellar populations are older than 1 Gyr
