High School Mathematics’ Teachers’ Knowledge, Opinions, and Preferences about Types of Problems (An Example from Turkey)

Problem solving is the building block of mathematics. Different approaches have been exhibited throughout the history to solve the problems that are as old as the history of humanity. As a result of developments in mathematics education, the problems are divided into different types according to the solution methods. Determining the types of these problems and their solution methods is a very important gain for students studying mathematics education. Thus, the approaches of teachers to this subject, as a guide, will lead the way for their students. The purpose of this study is to determine mathematics teachers’ knowledge, opinions, and preferences about the types of problems. The participants of the study were chosen among the mathematics teachers working in high schools located in a city in Turkey. The data sources of the study which adopted qualitative research methods are the interviews with the teachers, written exam questions, and lesson observations. For the data analysis, thematic content analysis and frequency and percentages were used. Considering the results obtained, the teachers do not recognize the non-routine problems and they do not use them in their exams and lessons. However, they find such problems meaningful and they want to use them in their courses if the necessary conditions are provided

Secondary School Students’Attitudes towards the Concept of Equality and Preservice Teachers’ Professional Noticing

With the understanding of importance of pedagogical content knowledge, professional noticing has become one of the research subjects of the mathematics educators for the last 10 years. This qualitative study which explores secondary school students’ solution processes regarding the concept of equation ,one of the main components of algebraic learning field and the pre-service teachers’ noticing about this is quite rich in terms of its results. The 6th, 7th, and 8th graders’ attitudes towards equations were revealed and it was found as stated in literature that students were dominantly “computational thinkers”. However, the differences in this general concept of thinking seem to make contribution to literature by involving discrete attitudes. In addition to this, the secondary findings of the study include some evidence revealing that pre-service teachers’ level of noticing accumulates at middle levels but they can be improved

Researching assessment and improvement approachment of students performance level that exhibited in mathematics courses

Bu araştırmanın amacı, öğrencilerin matematik derslerindeki performanslarını ölçmek ve bu performansın geliştirilmesi için uygun yaklaşımları kullanmaktır._x000B_Araştırma yarı deneysel bir çalışmadır ve kontrol gruplu ön test-son test modeline dayanmaktadır. Araştırmanın örneklemini, bir devlet lisesinde 2010-2011 eğitim-öğretim yılında eğitim gören iki adet 9. sınıf şubesinden seçilen 58 öğrenci oluşturmaktadır. Deney ve kontrol sınıfları 29'ar öğrenciden oluşmaktadır. Uygulama öncesinde deney ve kontrol gruplarının eş düzeyde olduğu ortaya konmuştur._x000B_Araştırmada nicel ve nitel veri toplama araçları kullanılmıştır. Veriler; matematik tutum ölçeği, performans ölçme ölçeği ve öğrenci gözlemlerinden elde edilmiştir. İstatistiksel çözümleme yöntemleri kullanılmıştır._x000B_Çalışmadan elde edilen verilerle, öğrencilerin performans düzeyleri belirlenmiştir. İlk-test ve son-test sonuçlarına göre, uygun öğrenme ortamı ve ders programı tasarımı ile öğrencilerin performans düzeylerinin yükseltilebileceği bulunmuştur. The aim of this study is to assess the students performance in mathematics courses and use utilize approaches to improve this performance._x000B_The study is a quasi-experimental research and stands on the pre-post modeling with an experimental group. For this study, 58 students are chosen among the students of a high school of Maths Course Classes B-C in 2010-2011. Both the experimental group and the control group consist of 29 members each. The level of the members in both groups are proved to be the same before the practice._x000B_Both qualitative and quantitative methods were used to collect the data. The data were collected by means of the Mathematics Attitudes Scales, Performance Assessment Scales and observations of the students. Statistical Analysis methods are used._x000B_The performance level of the students are derived from the data of the study. According to results of the pre-tes and post-test, it was found that students performance levels could be improved by designing appropriate learning environment and curriculum

Ülkemizde iş sağlığı ve güvenliği ile meslek hastalıkları konularında, kapsamlı Türkçe kitap ihtiyacı bulunmaktadır.
