CHANDRA Observations of X-ray Jet Structure on kpc to Mpc Scales
With its exquisite spatial resolution of better than 0.5 arcsecond, the
Chandra observatory is uniquely capable of resolving and studying the spatial
structure of extragalactic X-ray jets on scales of a few to a few hundred
kilo-parsec. Our analyses of four recent Chandra images of quasar jets
interpret the X-ray emission as inverse Compton scattering of high energy
electrons on the cosmic microwave background. We infer that these jets are in
bulk relativistic motion, carrying kinetic powers upwards of 10^46 ergs/s to

Mpox Virus in Pregnancy, the Placenta, and Newborn.
Before its eradication, the smallpox virus was a significant cause of poor obstetric outcomes, including maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality. The mpox (monkeypox) virus is now the most pathogenic member of the Orthopoxvirus genus infecting humans. The 2022 global mpox outbreak has focused attention on its potential effects during pregnancy.
To understand the comparative effects of different poxvirus infections on pregnancy, including mpox virus, variola virus, vaccinia virus, and cowpox virus. The impact on the pregnant individual, fetus, and placenta will be examined, with particular attention to the occurrence of intrauterine vertical transmission and congenital infection.
The data are obtained from the authors' cases and from various published sources, including early historical information and contemporary publications.
Smallpox caused maternal and perinatal death, with numerous cases reported of intrauterine transmission. In endemic African countries, mpox has also affected pregnant individuals, with up to a 75% perinatal case fatality rate. Since the start of the 2022 mpox outbreak, increasing numbers of pregnant women have been infected with the virus. A detailed description is given of the congenital mpox syndrome in a stillborn fetus, resulting from maternal-fetal transmission and placental infection, and the potential mechanisms of intrauterine infection are discussed. Other poxviruses, notably vaccinia virus and, in 1 case, cowpox virus, can also cause perinatal infection. Based on the historical evidence of poxvirus infections, mpox remains a threat to the pregnant population, and it can be expected that additional cases will occur in the future
DETERMINATION OF INTERSTITIAL SOLID-SOLUBILITY LIMIT IN TANTALUM AND IDENTIFICATION OF THE PRECIPITATE PHASES
Solid-solubility limits at 1500, 1000, snd 500/sup o/C for carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen in high-punity tantalum were determined by x-ray lattice- parameter methods. For carbon, the solubility was found to be 0.17 at. % at 1500/sup o/C and less than 0.07 at. % at l00/sup o/C. A nitrogen solubility of 3.70 at. % at l500/sup o/C decreased linearly with temperature to 2.75 at. % at 1000/sup o/C and 1.8 at. % at 500/sup o/C. In the case of oxygen, the solubility was found to be 3.65 at. % at 1500/sup o/C, 1.95 at. % at l0O0/sup o/ C, and 2.5 at. % at 500/sup o/C. The phases Ta/sub 2/, the lowtemperature modificstion of Ta/sub 2/O/sub 5/, and Ta/sub x/N of unknown coznposition hut which has a superlattice structure based upon the oniginsl body-centered-cubic tantalum lattice were identified is the initisl precipitates in the respective systems. The State of Self-Organized Criticality of the Sun During the Last 3 Solar Cycles. I. Observations
We analyze the occurrence frequency distributions of peak fluxes , total
fluxes , and durations of solar flares over the last three solar cycles
(during 1980--2010) from hard X-ray data of HXRBS/SMM, BATSE/CGRO, and RHESSI.
From the synthesized data we find powerlaw slopes with mean values of
for the peak flux, for the total
flux, and for flare durations. We find a systematic
anti-correlation of the powerlaw slope of peak fluxes as a function of the
solar cycle, varying with an approximate sinusoidal variation
, with a
mean of , a variation of , a solar cycle
period yrs, and a cycle minimum time . The
powerlaw slope is flattest during the maximum of a solar cycle, which indicates
a higher magnetic complexity of the solar corona that leads to an

Confirming vertical fetal infection with coronavirus disease 2019: Neonatal and pathology criteria for early onset and transplacental transmission of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 from infected pregnant mothers
Increasing numbers of pregnant women with coronavirus disease 2019 are being reported around the world. The majority of neonates delivered to pregnant women infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 have been negative for the virus, but a small number have tested positive for infection. It is important to determine whether vertical transmission of coronavirus disease 2019 occurs and the mechanisms for its development. Based on a number of clinical and laboratory findings, it has been suggested that transplacental transmission may be occurring, but a method to confirm this is necessary. This communication analyzes and evaluates the covariables that have been discussed as potential indicators of vertical and, specifically, intrauterine transmission, including the timing of onset of neonatal illness, neonatal viral test positivity, neonatal antibody testing for immunoglobulin (Ig) G and IgM, and viral analysis of swabs of whole specimens of placental tissue. None of these methods can provide confirmatory evidence that infection developed prior to labor and delivery, or that transplacental transmission occurred. This commentary proposes that diagnosis of early-onset neonatal coronavirus disease 2019 infection should be limited to neonates with positive reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction testing for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 within the initial 72 hours of life. It also proposes that the occurrence of intrauterine transplacental severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 among infected mother-infant dyads be based upon identification of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 in chorionic villus cells using immunohistochemistry or nucleic acid methods such as in situ hybridization. Evaluating placentas from neonates with coronavirus disease 2019 using these methods will be instrumental in determining the potential role and prevalence of transplacental transmission of the coronavirus. © 2020 College of American Pathologists. The three-dimensional random field Ising magnet: interfaces, scaling, and the nature of states
The nature of the zero temperature ordering transition in the 3D Gaussian
random field Ising magnet is studied numerically, aided by scaling analyses. In
the ferromagnetic phase the scaling of the roughness of the domain walls,
, is consistent with the theoretical prediction .
As the randomness is increased through the transition, the probability
distribution of the interfacial tension of domain walls scales as for a single
second order transition. At the critical point, the fractal dimensions of
domain walls and the fractal dimension of the outer surface of spin clusters
are investigated: there are at least two distinct physically important fractal
dimensions. These dimensions are argued to be related to combinations of the
energy scaling exponent, , which determines the violation of
hyperscaling, the correlation length exponent , and the magnetization
exponent . The value is derived from the
magnetization: this estimate is supported by the study of the spin cluster size
distribution at criticality. The variation of configurations in the interior of
a sample with boundary conditions is consistent with the hypothesis that there
is a single transition separating the disordered phase with one ground state
from the ordered phase with two ground states. The array of results are shown
to be consistent with a scaling picture and a geometric description of the
influence of boundary conditions on the spins. The details of the algorithm

Extragalactic jets on subpc and large scales
Jets can be probed in their innermost regions (d~0.1 pc) through the study of
the relativistically-boosted emission of blazars. On the other extreme of
spatial scales, the study of structure and dynamics of extragalactic
relativistic jets received renewed impulse after the discovery, made by
Chandra, of bright X-ray emission from regions at distances larger than
hundreds of kpc from the central engine. At both scales it is thus possible to
infer some of the basic parameters of the flow (speed, density, magnetic field
intensity, power). After a brief review of the available observational
evidence, I discuss how the comparison between the physical quantities
independently derived at the two scales can be used to shed light on the global

The Saffman-Taylor problem on a sphere
The Saffman-Taylor problem addresses the morphological instability of an
interface separating two immiscible, viscous fluids when they move in a narrow
gap between two flat parallel plates (Hele-Shaw cell). In this work, we extend
the classic Saffman-Taylor situation, by considering the flow between two
curved, closely spaced, concentric spheres (spherical Hele-Shaw cell). We
derive the mode-coupling differential equation for the interface perturbation
amplitudes and study both linear and nonlinear flow regimes. The effect of the
spherical cell (positive) spatial curvature on the shape of the interfacial
patterns is investigated. We show that stability properties of the fluid-fluid
interface are sensitive to the curvature of the surface. In particular, it is
found that positive spatial curvature inhibits finger tip-splitting. Hele-Shaw

A Multi-band Study of the Remarkable Jet in Quasar 4C+19.44
We present arcsecond-resolution data in the radio, IR, optical, and X-ray for 4C+19.44 (=PKS 1354+195), the longest and straightest quasar jet with deep X-ray observations. We report results from radio images with half to one arcsecond angular resolution at three frequencies, plus Hubble Space Telescope and Spitzer data. The Chandra data allow us to measure the X-ray spectral index in 10 distinct regions along the 18'' jet and compare with the radio index. The radio and X-ray spectral indices of the jet regions are consistent with a value of throughout the jet, to within uncertainties. The X-ray jet structure to the south extends beyond the prominent radio jet and connects to the southern radio lobe, and there is extended X-ray emission, both in the direction of the unseen counter-jet, and also coincident with the northern radio lobe. This jet is remarkable because its straight appearance over a large distance allows the geometry factors to be taken as fixed along the jet. Using the model of inverse Compton scattering of the cosmic microwave background (iC/CMB) by relativistic electrons, we find that the magnetic field strengths and Doppler factors are relatively constant along the jet. If instead the X-rays are synchrotron emission, they must arise from a population of electrons distinct from the particles producing the radio synchrotron spectrum
Does Reverse Causality Underlie the Temporal Relationship between Depression and Crohn's Disease?
Background: Studies suggest that there is a temporal relationship between depression and Crohn's disease (CD) activity. However, these studies assumed a unidirectional relationship and did not examine the possibility of reverse causality and the risk of a spurious association due to the overlap of symptoms underlying the depression-CD relationship. We evaluated the existence of reverse causality reflected in a possible bidirectional relationship between patient-reported CD activity and an affective-cognitive dimension of depression. Methods: We studied 3307 adult volunteers with a self-reported diagnosis of CD who completed a baseline survey that included demographics, CD activity, and an affective-cognitive index of depression. Crohn's disease status and the affective-cognitive index of depression were also measured 6 and 12 months after the baseline evaluation. We used structural equation models to evaluate whether the effect of depression on future CD activity is stronger than the effect of CD activity on future depression. We calculated the likelihood that each of these hypotheses is supported by the data and calculated the likelihood ratio to provide a relative measure of which hypothesis best accounts for the data. Results: The results of the informative hypothesis testing showed the most support for the hypothesis stating that an affective-cognitive dimension of depression is a stronger predictor of patient-reported CD activity than the converse. Conclusions: The hypothesis that an affective-cognitive dimension of depression predicts patient-reported exacerbation of CD is 218 times more likely to account for the data than the converse
