    Demonstration of angular anisotropy in the output of Thematic Mapper

    There is a dependence of TM output (proportional to scene radiance in a manner which will be discussed) upon season, upon cover type and upon view angle. The existence of a significant systematic variation across uniform scenes in p-type (radiometrically and geometrically pre-processed) data is demonstrated. Present pre-processing does remove the effects and the problem must be addressed because the effects are large. While this is in no way attributable to any shortcomings in the thematic mapper, it is an effect which is sufficiently important to warrant more study, with a view to developing suitable pre-processing correction algorithms

    Instrumental Variable Estimation of the Causal Effect of Hunger Early in Life on Health Later in Life

    Numerous studies have evaluated the effect of nutrition early in life on health much later in life by comparing individuals born during a famine to others. Nutritional intake is typically unobserved and endogenous, whereas famines arguably provide exogenous variation in the provision of nutrition. However, living through a famine early in life does not necessarily imply a lack of nutrition during that age interval, and vice versa, and in this sense the observed difference at most provides a qualitative assessment of the average causal effect of a nutritional shortage, which is the parameter of interest. In this paper we estimate this average causal effect on health outcomes later in life, by applying instrumental variable estimation, using data with self-reported periods of hunger earlier in life, with famines as instruments. The data contain samples from European countries and include birth cohorts exposed to various famines in the 20th century. We use two-sample IV estimation to deal with imperfect recollection of conditions at very early stages of life.     Field-induced domain wall propagation: beyond the one-dimensional model

    We have investigated numerically the field-driven propagation of perpendicularly magnetized ferromagnetic layers. It was then compared to the historical one-dimensional domain wall (DW) propagation model widely used in spintronics studies of magnetic nanostructures. In the particular regime of layer thickness (h) of the order of the exchange length, anomalous velocity peaks appear in the precessional regime, their shape and position shifting with h. This has also been observed experimentally. Analyses of the simulations show a distinct correlation between the curvature of the DW and the twist of the magnetization vector within it, and the velocity peak. Associating a phenomenological description of this twist with a four-coordinate DW propagation model, we reproduce very well these kinks and show that they result from the torque exerted by the stray field created by the domains on the twisted magnetization. The position of the peaks is well predicted from the DW's first flexural mode frequency, and depends strongly on the layer thickness. Comparison of the proposed model to DW propagation data obtained on dilute semiconductor ferromagnets GaMnAs and GaMnAsP sheds light on the origin of the measured peaks

    Hypoxia‐induced vascular endothelial growth factor expression causes vascular leakage in the brain

    Formation of cerebral oedema caused by vascular leakage is a major problem in various injuries of the CNS, such as stroke, head injury and high‐altitude illness. A common feature of all these disorders is the fact that they are associated with tissue hypoxia. Hypoxia has therefore been suggested to be an important pathogenic factor for the induction of vascular leakage in the brain. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is known as the major inducer of angiogenesis. Originally, however, it was described as a vascular permeability factor. As VEGF gene expression was shown to be upregulated by hypoxia, increased VEGF expression may link hypoxia and vascular leakage in the CNS in vivo. To delineate the role of VEGF in vascular leakage in the brain, we studied the effect of hypoxia on VEGF expression and vascular permeability in the brains of mice in vivo. Hypoxic exposure led to a significant increase in the levels of VEGF mRNA and protein in mouse brain that correlated with the severity of the hypoxic stimulus. Measurement of vascular permeability using the fluorescent marker sodium fluorescein revealed a two‐fold increase in fluorescence intensity in hypoxic brains, indicative of significant vascular leakage. Inhibition of VEGF activity by a neutralizing antibody completely blocked the hypoxia‐induced increase in vascular permeability. In conclusion, our data show that VEGF is responsible for hypoxia‐induced augmentation in vascular leakage following tissue hypoxia. Our findings might provide the basis for new therapeutic concepts for the treatment of cerebral oedem

    Multi-locus phylogeny of Pleosporales: a taxonomic, ecological and evolutionary re-evaluation

    Five loci, nucSSU, nucLSU rDNA, TEF1, RPB1 and RPB2, are used for analysing 129 pleosporalean taxa representing 59 genera and 15 families in the current classification of Pleosporales. The suborder Pleosporineae is emended to include four families, viz. Didymellaceae, Leptosphaeriaceae, Phaeosphaeriaceae and Pleosporaceae. In addition, two new families are introduced, i.e. Amniculicolaceae and Lentitheciaceae. Pleomassariaceae is treated as a synonym of Melanommataceae, and new circumscriptions of Lophiostomataceae s. str, Massarinaceae and Lophiotrema are proposed. Familial positions of Entodesmium and Setomelanomma in Phaeosphaeriaceae, Neophaeosphaeria in Leptosphaeriaceae, Leptosphaerulina, Macroventuria and Platychora in Didymellaceae, Pleomassaria in Melanommataceae and Bimuria, Didymocrea, Karstenula and Paraphaeosphaeria in Montagnulaceae are clarified. Both ecological and morphological characters show varying degrees of phylogenetic significance. Pleosporales is most likely derived from a saprobic ancestor with fissitunicate asci containing conspicuous ocular chambers and apical rings.     Variations in vascular access flows in haemodialysis can depend on needle orientation

    Introduction: While using the Transonic Qc[TM] machine to assess access flow in arteriovenous fistulae (AVF), we observed that when compared to antegrade arterial needle insertion, retrograde arterial needle insertion could regularly produce lower access flow measurements. This study sought to explore this phenomenon. Method: 23 patients entered and 20 finished the study. Patient selection criteria included: functioning AVF and an adequate AVF length for either retrograde or antegrade arterial needle insertion. After ensuring stable and similar blood pressures, 3 flow measurements were taken during the first 2 hours on the same dialysis day of 3 consecutive weeks using antegrade needle insertion then were repeated on 3 further consecutive weeks using retrograde insertion. Results: Overall, access flows measured with retrograde insertion were significantly lower by a mean difference of 107.15 ml/min (57-484 ml/min) than the flows measured with antegrade needle placement. In 5/20, 3 recorded minimal difference and 2 had a higher access flows during retrograde insertion. No recirculation was observed during either antegrade or retrograde needle insertion. The paired t-test showed that there was significant difference between the antegrade versus retrograde mean measurements (p = 0.005). Conclusion: Although the sample size is small and the number of measurements limited, we conclude that access flows may be greater with an antegrade arterial orientation compared to flows recorded with a retrograde orientation. The phenomenon behind this conclusion is yet to be investigated. We suggest that when using the Transonic Qc[TM] access measurement device the arterial needle should always be in the same direction for each measurement for each individual patient.<br /
