Surface structure of i-Al(68)Pd(23)Mn(9): An analysis based on the T*(2F) tiling decorated by Bergman polytopes
A Fibonacci-like terrace structure along a 5fold axis of i-Al(68)Pd(23)Mn(9)
monograins has been observed by T.M. Schaub et al. with scanning tunnelling
microscopy (STM). In the planes of the terraces they see patterns of dark
pentagonal holes. These holes are well oriented both within and among terraces.
In one of 11 planes Schaub et al. obtain the autocorrelation function of the
hole pattern. We interpret these experimental findings in terms of the
Katz-Gratias-de Boisseu-Elser model. Following the suggestion of Elser that the
Bergman clusters are the dominant motive of this model, we decorate the tiling
T*(2F) by the Bergman polytopes only. The tiling T*(2F) allows us to use the
powerful tools of the projection techniques. The Bergman polytopes can be
easily replaced by the Mackay polytopes as the decoration objects. We derive a
picture of ``geared'' layers of Bergman polytopes from the projection
techniques as well as from a huge patch. Under the assumption that no surface
reconstruction takes place, this picture explains the Fibonacci-sequence of the
step heights as well as the related structure in the terraces qualitatively and
to certain extent even quantitatively. Furthermore, this layer-picture requires
that the polytopes are cut in order to allow for the observed step heights. We
conclude that Bergman or Mackay clusters have to be considered as geometric
building blocks of the i-AlPdMn structure rather than as energetically stable
entities
Taking an ethics of care perspective on two university teacher training programmes
This paper shows the usefulness and interest of taking an ethics of care perspective to evaluate university teacher training programmes. More precisely, in this case study we use the five elements of care identified by Tronto – attentiveness, responsibility, competence, responsiveness and trust – to assess two multiple-day training programmes offered at the University of Geneva. We show how small changes in our practice such as giving some choice to the participants over the topics addressed, adapting the schedule to meet the participants’ constraints or dedicating time slots specifically for the questions and concerns raised by the participants can have a big impact on the level of care provided. We moreover argue that this framework brings interesting and novel elements that appropriately “counterbalances” traditional evaluations that are usually implicitly based on notions such as performance, efficiency and measurability. Finally, we briefly explain how the ethics of care could be used a basis to not only evaluate but to rethink and elaborate training programmes
Antiferromagnetic interlayer exchange coupling across an amorphous metallic spacer layer
By means of magneto-optical Kerr effect we observe for the first time
antiferromagnetic coupling between ferromagnetic layers across an amorphous
metallic spacer layer. Biquadratic coupling occurs at the transition from a
ferromagnetically to an antiferromagnetically coupled region. Scanning
tunneling microscopy images of all involved layers are used to extract
thickness fluctuations and to verify the amorphous state of the spacer. The
observed antiferromagnetic coupling behavior is explained by RKKY interaction
taking into account the amorphous structure of the spacer material.Comment: Typset using RevTex, 4 pages with 4 figures (.eps
Strong electron correlations in the normal state of FeSe0.42Te0.58
We investigate the normal state of the '11' iron-based superconductor
FeSe0.42Te0.58 by angle resolved photoemission. Our data reveal a highly
renormalized quasiparticle dispersion characteristic of a strongly correlated
metal. We find sheet dependent effective carrier masses between ~ 3 - 16 m_e
corresponding to a mass enhancement over band structure values of m*/m_band ~ 6
- 20. This is nearly an order of magnitude higher than the renormalization
reported previously for iron-arsenide superconductors of the '1111' and '122'
families but fully consistent with the bulk specific heat.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, to appear in Phys. Rev. Let
CANreduce-SP—adding psychological support to web-based adherence-focused guided self-help for cannabis users: study protocol for a three-arm randomized control trial
Background: Cannabis is the most-frequently used illicit drug in Europe. Over the last few years in Spain, treatment demand has increased, yet most cannabis users do not seek treatment despite the related problems. A web-based self-help tool, like CANreduce 2.0, could help these users to control their consumption.
Methods: This study protocol describes a three-arm randomized controlled trial (RCT) comparing the effectiveness of three approaches, in terms of reducing cannabis use among problematic cannabis users, the first two treatment arms including the Spanish version of CANreduce 2.0 (an adherence-focused, guidance-enhanced, web-based self-help tool) (1) with and (2) without psychological support; and the third group (3) treatment as usual (TAU). Study hypotheses will be tested concerning the primary outcome: change in the number of days of cannabis use over the previous week, comparing assessments at 6 weeks and 3 and 6 months follow-up between groups and against baseline. Secondary outcomes related to cannabis use will be tested similarly. Mental disorders will be explored as predictors of adherence and outcomes. Analyses will be performed on an intention-to-treat basis, then verified by complete case analyses.
Discussion: This study will test how effective the Spanish version of CANreduce 2.0 (CANreduce-SP) is at reducing both the frequency and quantity of cannabis use in problematic users and whether adding psychological support increases its effectiveness.
Trial registration: This trial is registered with the Clinical Trials Protocol Registration and Results System (PRS) number: NCT04517474 . Registered 18 August 2020, (Archived by archive.is https://archive.is/N1Y64 ). The project commenced in November 2020 and recruitment is anticipated to end by November 2022.

Electrochromic orbit control for smart-dust devices
Recent advances in MEMS (micro electromechanical systems) technology are leading to spacecraft which are the shape and size of computer chips, so-called SpaceChips, or ‘smart dust devices’. These devices can offer highly distributed sensing when used in future swarm applications. However, they currently lack a feasible strategy for active orbit control. This paper proposes an orbit control methodology for future SpaceChip devices which is based on exploiting the effects of solar radiation pressure using electrochromic coatings. The concept presented makes use of the high area-to-mass ratio of these devices, and consequently the large force exerted upon them by solar radiation pressure, to control their orbit evolution by altering their surface optical properties. The orbital evolution of Space Chips due to solar radiation pressure can be represented by a Hamiltonian system, allowing an analytic development of the control methodology. The motion in the orbital element phase space resembles that of a linear oscillator, which is used to formulate a switching control law. Additional perturbations and the effect of eclipses are accounted for by modifying the linearized equations of the secular change in orbital elements around an equilibrium point in the phase space of the problem. Finally, the effectiveness of the method is demonstrated in a test case scenario
Deep learning predicts function of live retinal pigment epithelium from quantitative microscopy.
Increases in the number of cell therapies in the preclinical and clinical phases have prompted the need for reliable and non-invasive assays to validate transplant function in clinical biomanufacturing. We developed a robust characterization methodology composed of quantitative bright-field absorbance microscopy (QBAM) and deep neural networks (DNNs) to non-invasively predict tissue function and cellular donor identity. The methodology was validated using clinical-grade induced pluripotent stem cell derived retinal pigment epithelial cells (iPSC-RPE). QBAM images of iPSC-RPE were used to train DNNs that predicted iPSC-RPE monolayer transepithelial resistance, predicted polarized vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) secretion, and matched iPSC-RPE monolayers to the stem cell donors. DNN predictions were supplemented with traditional machine learning algorithms that identified shape and texture features of single cells that were used to predict tissue function and iPSC donor identity. These results demonstrate non-invasive cell therapy characterization can be achieved with QBAM and machine learning
