An inelastic neutron scattering investigation of the temporal behaviour of the hydrocarbonaceous overlayer of a prototype Fischer-Tropsch to olefins catalyst

The Royal Society is thanked for the provision of an Industry Fellowship (PBW).A dual sodium and sulfur promoted haematite, representative of a candidate Fischer-Tropsch to olefins (FTO) catalyst, is prepared and contrasted with the performance of an unpromoted hematite sample in the ambient pressure CO hydrogenation reaction at 623 K as a function of time-on-stream (0–24 h). In-situ post-reaction temperature-programmed oxidation measurements show the carbon evolutionary phase of the catalyst conditioning process to be retarded for the FTO catalyst. Ex-situ inelastic neutron scattering measurements show the promoters perturb the formation of a previously described hydrocarbonaceous overlayer. Specifically, whilst the sp3 hybridised C–H modes of the hydrocarbonaceous overlayer are almost unaffected by the additives, the formation of the overlayer’s sp2 hybridised C–H modes are noticeably impeded. The results are discussed in terms of the Na/S promoters disturbing the formation of an ordered hydrocarbonaceous overlayer that is thought to constrain the supply of adsorbed hydrogen atoms, which favours the formation of unsaturated hydrocarbons associated with the FTO process.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
Kappa-symmetry for coincident D-branes
A kappa-symmetric action for coincident D-branes is presented. It is valid in
the approximation that the additional fermionic variables, used to incorporate
the non-abelian degrees of freedom, are treated classically. The action is
written as a Bernstein-Leites integral on the supermanifold obtained from the
bosonic worldvolume by adjoining the extra fermions. The integrand is a very
simple extension of the usual Green-Schwarz action for a single brane; all
symmetries, except for kappa, are manifest, and the proof of kappa-symmetry is

A direct solver method is developed for solving Poisson`s equation numerically for the electrostatic potential {phi}(r,z) in a cylindrical region (r < R{sub wall}, 0 < z < L). The method assumes the charge density {rho}(r,z) and wall potential {phi}(r = R{sub wall}, z) are specified, and {partial_derivative}{phi}/{partial_derivative}z = 0 at the axial boundaries (z = 0, L)
Screening of Hydrodynamic Interactions in Semidilute Polymer Solutions: A Computer Simulation Study
We study single-chain motion in semidilute solutions of polymers of length N
= 1000 with excluded-volume and hydrodynamic interactions by a novel algorithm.
The crossover length of the transition from Zimm (short lengths and times) to
Rouse dynamics (larger scales) is proportional to the static screening length.
The crossover time is the corresponding Zimm time. Our data indicate Zimm
behavior at large lengths but short times. There is no hydrodynamic screening
until the chains feel constraints, after which they resist the flow:

Neutron Diffraction Study of Field Cooling Effects on Relaxor Ferroelectrics Pb[(Zn_{1/3} Nb_{2/3})_{0.92} Ti_{0.08}] O_{3}
High-temperature (T) and high-electric-field (E) effects on Pb[(Zn_{1/3}
Nb_{2/3})_{0.92} Ti_{0.08}]O_3 (PZN-8%PT) were studied comprehensively by
neutron diffraction in the ranges 300 <= T <= 550 K and 0 <= E <= 15 kV/cm. We
have focused on how phase transitions depend on preceding thermal and
electrical sequences. In the field cooling process (FC, E parallel [001] >= 0.5
kV/cm), a successive cubic (C) --> tetragonal (T) --> monoclinic (M_C)
transition was observed. In the zero field cooling process (ZFC), however, we
have found that the system does not transform to the rhombohedral (R) phase as
widely believed, but to a new, unidentified phase, which we call X. X gives a
Bragg peak profile similar to that expected for R, but the c-axis is always
slightly shorter than the a-axis. As for field effects on the X phase, we found
an irreversible X --> M_C transition via another monoclinic phase (M_A) as
expected from a previous report [Noheda et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 86, 3891
(2001)]. At a higher electric field, we confirmed a c-axis jump associated with
the field-induced M_C --> T transition, which was observed by strain and x-ray

Cosmological equations and Thermodynamics on Apparent Horizon in Thick Braneworld
We derive the generalized Friedmann equation governing the cosmological
evolution inside the thick brane model in the presence of two curvature
correction terms: a four-dimensional scalar curvature from induced gravity on
the brane, and a five-dimensional Gauss-Bonnet curvature term. We find two
effective four-dimensional reductions of the Friedmann equation in some limits
and demonstrate that they can be rewritten as the first law of thermodynamics

Liquid-Solid Transition of Hard Spheres Under Gravity
We investigate the liquid-solid transition of two dimensional hard spheres in
the presence of gravity. We determine the transition temperature and the
fraction of particles in the solid regime as a function of temperature via
Even-Driven molecular dynamics simulations and compare them with the
theoretical predictions. We then examine the configurational statistics of a
vibrating bed from the view point of the liquid-solid transition by explicitly
determining the transition temperature and the effective temperature, T, of the
