High-resolution palynological analysis in Lake Sapanca as a tool to detect recent earthquakes on the North Anatolian Fault
High-resolution palynological analysis of a 38-cm-long core collected from Lake Sapanca, northwest Turkey, reveals large earthquakes that occurred during the second half of the 20th century along the North Anatolian Fault Zone. Four events have disturbed the lacustrine sedimentary sequence. Three of the four events are historical earthquakes in 1999 in Izmit, 1967 in Mudurnu and 1957 in Abant. These events are recorded in the core by turbiditic deposits and reworked sediment and by low overall palynomorph concentrations but high values of thick-exined pollen, fern spores and fungal spores. Palynomorphs in the event beds have been grouped based on their associations in modern moss, river and lake samples. The inferred mechanisms of transport and sources for the palynomorphs are: 1- lake sediment displaced by slump, 2- collapsed shoreline sediment owing to seiche, waves and sudden lake level changes, 3- subsidence of deltas and 4- river-transported soil and sediment from upland areas. The 1999 Izmit earthquake is only weakly recorded by palynomorphs, probably due to recent engineering control on the rivers. The 1967 Mudurnu earthquake had the strongest effect on the lake, introducing successive packages of sediment to the centre of the lake from underwater slopes, the lakeshore and rivers

ADS modules
We study the class of ADS rings and modules introduced by Fuchs. We give some
connections between this notion and classical notions such as injectivity and
quasi-continuity. A simple ring R such that R is ADS as a right R-module must
be either right self-injective or indecomposable as a right R-module. Under
certain conditions we can construct a unique ADS hull up to isomorphism. We
introduce the concept of completely ADS modules and characterize completely ADS
semiperfect right modules as direct sum of semisimple and local modules.Comment: 7 page
Stimulated Raman Adiabatic Passage via bright state in Lambda medium of unequal oscillator strengths
We consider the population transfer process in a Lambda-type atomic medium of
unequal oscillator strengths by stimulated Raman adiabatic passage via
bright-state (b-STIRAP) taking into account propagation effects. Using both
analytic and numerical methods we show that the population transfer efficiency
is sensitive to the ratio q_p/q_s of the transition oscillator strengths. We
find that the case q_p>q_s is more detrimental for population transfer process
as compared to the case where . For this case it is possible to
increase medium dimensions while permitting efficient population transfer. A
criterion determining the interaction adiabaticity in the course of propagation
process is found. We also show that the mixing parameter characterizing the
population transfer propagates superluminally
Designing algorithms to aid discovery by chemical robots
Recently, automated robotic systems have become very efficient, thanks to improved coupling between sensor systems and algorithms, of which the latter have been gaining significance thanks to the increase in computing power over the past few decades. However, intelligent automated chemistry platforms for discovery orientated tasks need to be able to cope with the unknown, which is a profoundly hard problem. In this Outlook, we describe how recent advances in the design and application of algorithms, coupled with the increased amount of chemical data available, and automation and control systems may allow more productive chemical research and the development of chemical robots able to target discovery. This is shown through examples of workflow and data processing with automation and control, and through the use of both well-used and cutting-edge algorithms illustrated using recent studies in chemistry. Finally, several algorithms are presented in relation to chemical robots and chemical intelligence for knowledge discovery
Magnetic Field-Vector Measurements in Quiescent Prominences via the Hanle Effect: Analysis of Prominences Observed at Pic-Du-Midi and at Sacramento Peak
The Hanle effect method for magnetic field vector diagnostics has now provided results on the magnetic field strength and direction in quiescent prominences, from linear polarization measurements in the He I E sub 3 line, performed at the Pic-du-Midi and at Sacramento Peak. However, there is an inescapable ambiguity in the field vector determination: each polarization measurement provides two field vector solutions symmetrical with respect to the line-of-sight. A statistical analysis capable of solving this ambiguity was applied to the large sample of prominences observed at the Pic-du-Midi (Leroy, et al., 1984); the same method of analysis applied to the prominences observed at Sacramento Peak (Athay, et al., 1983) provides results in agreement on the most probable magnetic structure of prominences; these results are detailed. The statistical results were confirmed on favorable individual cases: for 15 prominences observed at Pic-du-Midi, the two-field vectors are pointing on the same side of the prominence, and the alpha angles are large enough with respect to the measurements and interpretation inaccuracies, so that the field polarity is derived without any ambiguity
An economics systems analysis of land mobile radio telephone services
The economic interaction of the terrestrial and satellite systems is considered. Parametric equations are formulated to allow examination of necessary user thresholds and growth rates as a function of system costs. Conversely, first order allowable systems costs are found as a function of user thresholds and growth rates. Transitions between satellite and terrestrial service systems are examined. User growth rate density (user/year/sq km) is shown to be a key parameter in the analysis of systems compatibility. The concept of system design matching the price/demand curves is introduced and examples are given. The role of satellite systems is critically examined and the economic conditions necessary for the introduction of satellite service are identified

Natural and anthropogenic rapid changes in the Kara-Bogaz Gol over the last two centuries reconstructed from palynological analyses and a comparison to instrumental records
Palynological analyses (pollen and dinocysts) of a sediment core taken in the Kara-Bogaz Gol have been used to
reconstruct rapid and catastrophic environmental changes over the last two centuries (chronology based on 210Pb). A
natural cyclicity (65 years) of water level changes in the Caspian Sea and in the Kara-Bogaz Gol and anthropogenic
factors (building of a dam separating the CS and the KBG waters) combine to induce rapid changes in water levels of
the KBG, in the salinity of its waters and in vegetation cover of its surroundings. The impact of low water levels on
the dinocysts is marked by a lower diversity and the survival of two species that are typical of the KBG, the Caspian
Sea species present in the KBG having disappeared. During periods of higher water levels (AD 1871 to 1878), the
lake is surrounded by a steppe-like vegetation dominated by Artemisia; whereas during periods of low water levels
(AD 1878 to 1913 and AD 1955-1998), the emerged shore are colonised by Chenopodiaceae. The period of AD 1913
to 1955 corresponding to decreasing water levels has an extremely low pollen concentration and a maximum of
reworking of arboreal taxa. During the last low-level period, humans responded by abandoning the shores of the bay.
What happened to the KBG can be used as an example of what may happen in the future for the Aral Sea.
A problem of reworking of Tertiary dinocysts into modern deposits has been detected owing to the knowledge of the
modern dinoflagellate assemblages recently made available through a water survey. A comparison to modern surface
pollen samples from Central Asia (Anzali, Caspian Sea south and central basins, Aral Sea, Lake Balkhash, Lake
Issyk-Kul and the Chinese Tien-Shan range) allows us to establish the potential reworking of at least five arboreal
pollen taxa possibly by run-off and dust storms

This study contributes to this aim by investigating patterns of sedimentation associated with extreme coastal flood events, in particular, within the Lagoa de Óbidos (Portugal). The recent stratigraphy of this coastal lagoon was studied using a wide range of techniques including visual description, grain-size analysis, digital and x-ray photography, magnetic susceptibility and geochemical analysis. The sequence was dated by 14C, 210Pb and Optically Stimulated Luminescence. Results disclose a distinctive coarser sedimentary unit, within the top of the sequence studied, and shown in quartz sand by the enrichment of elements with marine affinity (e.g., Ca and Na) and carbonates. The unit fines upwards and inland, thins inland and presents a sharp erosive basal contact. A noticeable post-event change in the sedimentary pattern was observed. The likely agent of sedimentation is discussed here and the conceivable association with the Great Lisbon tsunami of AD 1755 is debated, while a comparison is attempted with a possibly synchronous deposit from a tsunami in Martinhal (Algarve, Portugal). The possibility of a storm origin is also discussed in the context of the storminess of the western Portuguese coast and the North Atlantic Oscillation. This study highlights certain characteristics of the sedimentology of the deposits that may have a value in the recognition of extreme marine inundation signatures elsewhere in the world.This article is made available through the Brunel Open Access Publishing Fund
