Get PDF
Given any positive sequence (\{c_n\}_{n \in {\Bbb N}}), we construct orientation preserving homeomorphisms (f:{\Bbb R}^3 \to {\Bbb R}^3) such that (Fix(f)=Per(f)=\{0\}), (0) is Lyapunov stable and (\limsup \frac{|i(f^m, 0)|}{c_m}= \infty). We will use our results to discuss and to point out some strong differences with respect to the computation and behavior of the sequences of the indices of planar homeomorphisms.Comment: 19 pages, 8 figure

Therefore, research on the genetic architecture of BAT could be key for the development of successful therapies against this complex phenotype. Hypothesis-driven candidate gene association studies are useful for studying genetic determinants of complex traits, but they are dependent upon the previous knowledge to select candidate genes. Here, we predicted 107 novel-BAT candidate genes in silico using the uncoupling protein one (UCP1) as the hallmark of BAT activity. We first identified the top 1% of human genes predicted by the human gene connectome to be biologically closest to the UCP1, estimating 167 additional pathway genes (BAT connectome). We validated this prediction by showing that 60 genes already associated with BAT were included in the connectome and they were biologically closer to each other than expected by chance (p < 2.2 × 10− 16). The rest of genes (107) are potential candidates for BAT, being also closer to known BAT genes and more expressed in BAT biopsies than expected by chance (p < 2.2 × 10− 16; p = 4.39 × 10– 02). The resulting new list of predicted human BAT genes should be useful for the discovery of novel BAT genes and metabolic pathways.Marie S. Indices of the iterates of ({\Bbb R}^3)-homeomorphisms at fixed points which are isolated invariant sets

Let (U \subset {\mathbb R}^3) be an open set and (f:U \to f(U) \subset {\mathbb R}^3) be a homeomorphism. Let (p \in U) be a fixed point. It is known that, if (\{p\}) is not an isolated invariant set, the sequence of the fixed point indices of the iterates of (f) at (p), ((i(f^n,p))_{n\geq 1}), is, in general, unbounded. The main goal of this paper is to show that when (\{p\}) is an isolated invariant set, the sequence ((i(f^n,p))_{n\geq 1}) is periodic. Conversely, we show that for any periodic sequence of integers ((I_n)_{n \geq1}) satisfying Dold's necessary congruences, there exists an orientation preserving homeomorphism such that (i(f^n,p)=I_n) for every (n\geq 1). Finally we also present an application to the study of the local structure of the stable/unstable sets at (p)

Improving the structural reliability of steel frames using posttensioned connections

In this paper, various moment-resisting steel frames (MRSFs) are subjected to 30 narrow-band motions scaled at different ground motion intensity levels in terms of spectral acceleration at first mode of vibration in order to perform incremental dynamic analysis for peak and residual interstory drift demands. The results are used to compute the structural reliability of the steel frames by means of hazard curves for peak and residual drifts. It is observed that the structures exceed the threshold residual drift of 0.5%, which is perceptible to human occupants, and it could lead to human discomfort according to recent investigations. For this reason, posttensioned connections (PTCs) are incorporated into the steel frames in order to improve the structural reliability. The results suggest that the annual rate of exceedance of peak and residual interstory drift demands are reduced with the use of PTC. Thus, the structural reliability of the steel frames with PTC is superior to that of the MRSFs. In particular, the residual drift demands tend to be smaller when PTCs are incorporated in the steel structures.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

Ecological studies in Alto Guadalquivir wetlands : a first step towards the application of conservation plans

This paper reviews the most recent studies carried out in the Alto Guadalquivir wetlands. Data on wetland inventory and classification in typologies, faunal and floral community values are presented as well as the effects that agricultural pollutants have on some aquatic species. These results support the need for a correct wetland policy that allows for the conservation of these aquatic ecosystems.

Historically, agriculture has undergone a series of revolutions that have increased efficiency, yield and profitability to previously unattainable levels. Market forecasts for the next decade suggest that a “digital agricultural revolution” will be the most innovative change that could help make agriculture meet the needs of the world’s population in the future (La, Las, & Rurales, 2019 , P 1). The adoption of agriculture 4.0 in the department of Quindío is low, which leads to the development of inefficient and profitable production models; The purpose of this project is the organic production of vegetables under controlled atmospheres, making use of low-cost measurement sensors (relative humidity, temperature, soil humidity), in order to validate their functionalityHistóricamente, la agricultura ha experimentado una serie de revoluciones que han incrementado la eficiencia, el rendimiento y la rentabilidad a niveles antes inalcanzables.

Comparing hysteretic energy and ductility uniform annual failure rate spectra for traditional and a spectral shape-based intensity measure

    Get PDF
In this study, with the objective to develop a reliability-based seismic design tool, ductility and dissipated hysteretic energy uniform annual failure rate (UAFR) spectra are obtained and compared using the spectral acceleration at first mode of vibration of the structure Sa(T1) and the well-known spectral shape-based intensity measure INp. Notice that this is the first time in the literature that UAFR spectra are obtained for the advanced spectral shape intensity measure INp. For this aim, 110 simulated ground motions recorded from the soft soil of Mexico City were selected due to their large energy amount demanded to the structures; moreover, four elastoplastic hysteretic behavior models are considered for the dynamic analyses with post-yielding stiffness of 0, 3, 5, and 10%. It is observed that the use of elasto-perfectly plastic models provided similar UAFR spectra in comparison with hysteretic models with different post-yielding stiffness. This conclusion is valid for the two selected intensity measures. In addition, the lateral resistance required to achieve similar structural reliability levels is larger when the INp intensity measure is used, especially for buildings with vibration periods equal or larger than the soil period, in such a way that the traditional use of Sa(T1) could provide structures with less structural reliability levels.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version
