Dithiocarbazate derivatives have shown significant bioactivities especially as antibacterial agents. However due to the poor penetration into bacteria and its toxicity, their potential as a good antibacterial agent was dismissed. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to synthesize a new substituted dithiocarbazate derivative, S-benzyl-α-N-(anisoyl) dithiocarbazate (SB4OME) and its metal complex. SB4OME behaves as a tridentate chelating agent that coordinates with the metal ions with the general formula of [M(SB4OME)2] where M is Cu2+, Zn2+, Co2+ and Ni2+. All the compounds were characterized with various physico-chemical techniques including melting point analysis, FT-IR spectroscopy, UV–Vis spectroscopy, NMR spectroscopy, magnetic susceptibility and molar conductivity measurements. The antibacterial activity of all the compounds was tested against Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923), Bacillus cereus (ATCC 11778), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 27853) and Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922). The complexes significantly exhibited a stronger antibacterial activity than SB4OME against specific bacteria. All compounds showed a good drug like character through ADMET investigation, which was determined using SwissADME and Pro Tox-II. This showed that SB4OME and its complexes reduced the toxicity of dithiocarbazate derivatives and significantly enhanced their penetration in bacteria due to the coordination with metal ions resulting in increased bioactivity

The principle of this study is to analyse the application of English law in Malaysia and Singapore. Basically, the application of English law in Malaysia is govern by Section 3 and Section 5 of the Civil Law Act 1956. However, these sections have caused some problems to the development of our own law. These problems have been address by a well prominent academicians, legal practitioners and also judges. Furthermore, we will make a comparative study with Singapore legal system in which they have managed to untie their relationship with the Civil Law Act 1956 by repealing Section 5 of the Civil Law Act (Singapore) and enacting the Application of English Law Act 1993 to govern the application of English law in their country. Moreover, we will discuss on the strengths and the weaknesses of the Civil Law Act 1956 (Malaysia) and the Application of English Law Act 1993 (Singapore) in a comprehensive detail. At the end of this paper, we also provide some recommendations to improve the application of English Law in Malaysia which we hope would help in generating our own Malaysian Common Law

This paper investigates the impact of the high-K material gate spacer on short channel effects (SCEs) for the 16 nm double-gate FinFET (DG-FinFET), where depletion-layer widths of the source-drain corresponds to the channel length. Virtual fabrication process along with design modification throughout the study and its electrical characterization is implemented and significant improvement is shown towards the altered structure design whereby in terms of the ratio of drive current against the leakage current (ION/IOFF ratio), all three materials tested being S3N4, HfO2 and TiO2 increases from the respective 60.90, 80.70 and 84.77 to 84.77, 91.54 and 92.69. That being said, the incremental in ratio has satisfied the incremental on the drive current as well as decreases the leakage current. Threshold voltage (VTH) for all dielectric materials have also satisfy the minimum requirement predicted by the International Technology Roadmap Semiconductor (ITRS) 2013 for which is at 0.461±12.7% V. Based on the results obtained, the high-K materials have shown a significant improvement, specifically after the modifications towards the Source/Drain. Compared to the initial design made, TiO2 has improved by 12.94% after the alteration made in terms of the overall ION and IOFF performances through the ION/IOFF ratio value obtained, as well as meeting the required value for VTH obtained at 0.464V. The ION from high-K materials has proved to meet the minimum requirement by ITRS 2013 for low performance Multi-Gate technology. © 2019 Institute of Advanced Engineering and Science

Elder financial abuse was claimed to be under-reported. In the literatures, there are many discussions on the elder financial abuse but there was scarcity in the discussion of elder financial abuse in legal context. This paper aims to identify the legal protection related to elder financial abuse in Malaysia. The method used in this paper is the doctrinal method and qualitative study approach based on content analysis, where the Domestic Violence Act 1994 (DVA), the Malaysian Penal Code (PC), the Contracts Act 1950 (CA) and case laws will be analysed. The results show the legal protection on the issue of elder financial abuse and the remedies available for the elderly in Malaysia. Elder financial abuse can happen in domestic violence, contract and criminal cases. The perpetrator involved could be strangers or someone with trust. The remedies available are also differ depending on the cases

Purpose: Peer-assisted learning (PAL) in formative objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) is an approach used to evaluate the students' clinical competence. This study aims to determine the PAL effectiveness in the formative OSCE in improving clinical competencies and the students' perception and satisfaction of PAL. Design/methodology/approach: Sixty-seven Year 2 medical students experienced PAL in a formative OSCE setting. A self-administered questionnaire was distributed to evaluate their perception and satisfaction on PAL. The effectiveness of the sessions was determined by comparing their OSCE scores between the pre- and post-intervention. Findings: Forty-three students completed the intervention and had the experience to assess their peers as well as being assessed during formative OSCE. However, only 26 students managed to attend both pre- and post-intervention OSCE. It was found that there was a significant improvement of OSCE score after the PAL sessions. Over 97% of these students perceived positively and were satisfied with the sessions and thought that formative OSCE gave an opportunity to improve their learning and develop self-confidence in clinical skills. Originality/value: The findings suggested that PAL in the formative OSCE is a good opportunity to help in students' learning and improve their clinical competencies apart from learning with experts

    No full text
    (1) Background: The ability to communicate with patients and their relatives is a crucial skill for a physician. Unfortunately, many physicians and medical students are not well-equipped in this area. Therefore, this study aims to better understand the views on critical components of physician-patient communication to improve their skills. (2) Methods: This qualitative study utilized focus group discussions (FGDs) and in-depth interviews (IDIs). Through a purposive sampling technique, 32 medical students and physicians from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Universiti Putra Malaysia (FMHS UPM) and Universiti Putra Malaysia Teaching Hospital (HPUPM), as well as patients and relatives from government and private hospitals or clinics were recruited. All sessions were audio-recorded, transcribed, and analyzed thematically. (3) Results: Seven themes were identified: professionalism, content of communication, verbal, non-verbal and paraverbal communication skills, environment, and visual communication. Good eye contact, providing treatment plans, and ensuring patient privacy and confidentiality were emphasized by physicians and medical students. In comparison, patients and relatives focused on the prognosis of disease, physician’s empathy and advice, and physician’s skills in building rapport with their patients and relatives. (4) Conclusion: The critical components that were highlighted by both professionals and laymen in the study should be practiced to ensure effective communication between physician and patient. There were different expectations in terms of the content of information between both groups. Patients and relatives were more interested in the physician’s advice regarding their diet, care plans, physical activities, and daily routine. They were also focused on the prognosis of the disease, which indicates how quickly they would get better. Meanwhile, physicians and medical students were concentrating on management and treatment strategies, such as what additional procedures should be considered and what medications might work best for their patients. We also found that the patients and relatives had a lack of awareness on confidentiality issues. These findings provide an insight on the improvement of medical training and patient education to improve patient care. Patients have a right to privacy protection, and physicians should be well trained to carry out all procedures and treatment plans to ensure patients are treated with respect
