Ephemeral Spaces, Undying Dreams: Social Justice Struggles In Contemporary Puerto Rico

The premise of this dissertation is that ephemeral spaces serve as practice ground for enacting fleeting moments of autonomy. My narrative centers the ephemeral nature of political possibility, doing so in a way that attempts to preserve the undecidable directionality of these moments. Focusing on occupation as a tactic of resistance, I discuss two contemporary manifestations I witnessed while in Puerto Rico from 2009-2011: the 62 day system wide student strike organized in 2010 at the University of Puerto Rico and El Campamento Playas Pa'l Pueblo, a squat founded in 2005 to prevent the privatization of a parcel of public coastal land. I call these spaces liberation experiments to underscore my interest in understanding them as part of the project to achieve self-determination for Puerto Ricans. Although there is some debate as to whether Puerto Rico is a colony in the strict sense of the word, since it was "decolonized" when it became a commonwealth of the United States, it still remains the case that such a relationship of over a century of partial integration to the United States has perverted the political terrain. By linking these queries into the micropolitics of resistance spaces to Puerto Rico's nonsovereign political terrain, I argue that these ephemeral space/times have political implications that go beyond efforts to shift modes of organizing to prefigurative action emergent across the globe. My project is to reclaim the term revolution in Puerto Rican Studies as a terrain that lies outside the traditional trajectory of nation-state formation and status debate and am keen to show how efforts to build ephemeral spaces of resistance assist participants in experimenting partial breaks, ruptures and gaps from what Nelson Maldonado Torres calls, "coloniality of being." This work builds upon the anthropology of social movements where scholars have done much to emphasize the mundane aspects of organizing, focusing on the affects and ambivalences produced by resistance work. In each chapter, I attend to the way political possibility is experienced and effaced in the intimate moments of struggle. However, my claim to the importance of the ephemeral in our theorizations of social movements is drawn from Caribbeanist, feminist and queer genealogies that posit alternative conceptualizations of temporality and aim to deconstruct transcendental models of History. By writing experimentally, prioritizing the storytelling and affective domain of living a moment of revolutionary possibility, I amplify the poetics of resistance space. I am not interested in making temporary encampments "more familiar" to the reader but rather in transferring some of that affect to readers through writing. In emphasizing the "poetics," I underscore that I am invested in producing a text that evokes memories, embodied realizations of my experience in the field-a place that is also my ancestral home(land). In attending to the poetics of ephemeral spaces of resistance, I aim to subvert what J.K. Gibson-Graham identify as "left melancholia" evidenced by our tendency to critique to the point of paralysis, instead stimulating our knowledge of the realm of the possible which emerge within the impossible conditions in which we live

Building Institutional Support for Undocumented and DACA-eligible College Students in Michigan

    Get PDF
In 2017, the state of Michigan operated, and continues to operate, in an unstipulated policy environment related to undocumented students. There is no higher education commission or policy coordinating body in Michigan nor has the state legislature passed any legislation related to undocumented students or students who are DACA-eligible. Under this unstipulated policy environment, postsecondary institutions have the discretion to establish their own admissions policies and practices, including tuition and financial aid guidelines for undocumented students. Some institutions have stated their public support of these students through what they identify as inclusive and supportive institutional practices via their websites. However, these polices have created a nebulous environment which has created additional barriers for undocumented and DACA-eligible students trying to access postsecondary education. The lack of clear and consistent financial aid and admission policies across the state has resulted in a convoluted environment for undocumented and DACA-eligible students in applying to institutions. In this paper, we highlight how a group of undergraduate and graduate University of Michigan student researchers, both documented and undocumented, developed an instrument to analyze institutional policies related to in-state resident tuition, admission, financial aid, as well as the availability of dedicated student support services for undocumented and DACA-eligible students in the state of Michigan during the Fall of 2017. The data for this project has been turned into a website with updated (as of 2020) and available at https://uleadnet.org/mi-undocu-map

Oregano essential oil-pectin edible films as anti-quorum sensing and food antimicrobial agents

    Get PDF
Edible films can be used as carriers for antimicrobial compounds to assure food safety andquality; in addition, pathogenesis of food bacteria is related to a cell to cell communicationmechanism calledquorum sensing(QS). Oregano essential oil (OEO) has proved to beuseful as food antimicrobial; however, its foodapplications can be compromised by thevolatile character of its active constituents. Therefore, formulation of edible films containingOEO can be an alternative to improve its food usages. QS inhibitory activity of OEO andpectin-OEO films was evaluated usingChromobacterium violaceumas bacterial model.Additionally, antibacterial activity was tested againstEscherichia coliO157:H7,SalmonellaCholeraesuis,Staphylococcus aureus, andListeria monocytogenes. OEO was effective toinhibit bacterial growth at MIC of 0.24 mg/mL for all tested bacteria and MBC of 0.24,0.24, 0.48, and 0.24 mg/mL againstE. coliO157:H7,S.Choleraesuis,S. aureus, andL.monocytogenes, respectively. Pectin-films incorporated with 36.1 and 25.9 mg/mL of OEOshowed inhibition diameters of 16.3 and 15.2 mm forE. coliO157:H7; 18.1 and 24.2 mm forS.Choleraesuis; 20.8 and 20.3 mm forS. aureus; 21.3 and 19.3 mm forL. monocytogenes, respectively. Pectin-OEO film (15.7 mg/mL) was effective againstE. coliO157:H7 (9.3 mm),S. aureus(9.7 mm), andL. monocytogenes(9.2 mm), but not forS.Choleraesuis. Allconcentrations of OEO (0.0156, 0.0312, 0.0625 and 0.125 mg/mL) and pectin-OEO films(15.7, 25.9 and 36.1 mg/mL) showed a significant anti-QS activity expressed as inhibition ofviolacein production byC. violaceum. Additionally, the application of pectin-OEO films waseffective reducing total coliforms, yeast, and molds of shrimp and cucumber slices storedat 4◦C during 15 d.These results demonstrated the potential of pectin films enriched withOEO as food related microorganisms and QS inhibitorsFil: Alvarez, María Victoria. Hidden and uninterested populations : methodological insights and unresolved issues from the study of Cannabis Social Clubs

    Get PDF
Cannabis Social Clubs are typically non-profit associations established by adult users of cannabis, which produce and distribute cannabis among their members. Such associations can be found in several European countries and beyond, but with exception of Uruguay, they are illegal or otherwise operate at the margins of domestic drug control legislation, at risk for law enforcement detection. We have conducted several individual and collaborative studies on Cannabis Social Clubs and their key actors (e.g. Cannabis Social Clubs leaders, users affiliated as members, cannabis growers, other stakeholders), primarily drawing on qualitative methods (e.g. ethnographic fieldwork, interviews, qualitative media analyses) but also employing a quantitative approach (e.g. online surveys). In this article, we reflect on the research experiences of the authors in studying Cannabis Social Clubs, providing insights for future research in this area and within criminology and socio-legal studies. In particular, we aim to examine our approaches with regard to the recruitment of participants and research design, identifying good practices, but also discussing what the less successful strategies were. We draw on research conducted since 2014 in different countries, with different legal frameworks, which provides an opportunity for a comparative and more in-depth critical consideration of what might be helpful ways of reaching and researching hard-to-reach populations
