It is asserted that Hume’s thoughts on progress, although similar to those exposed by some of his contemporaries, are characterized by a sober conception of human action on history. The main characteristics of the German philosopher F. Rapp’s recent developed interpretation of the technological phenomenon are presented and commented. In his philosophy stands out the consideration of historical and normative aspects, both taken by Rapp to be indispensable for appropriate understanding of modern technology. Se presentan y discuten críticamente las opiniones de Karl Popper acerca de la tecnología. Primero se estudia la relación establecida por Popper entre ciencia básica, ciencia aplicada y tecnología, y se hacen de paso algunas aclaraciones conceptuales. Luego se examina el lugar de la tecnología en el marco de la filosofía popperiana de la sociedad y la historia. Finalmente se destacan algunos problemas en relación con la teoría popperiana de los “tres mundos” y el lugar de la tecnología en ella.Karl Popper’s views regarding modern technology are presented and critically discussed. Firstly, the relationship established by Popper among basic science, applied science and technology is studied and some conceptual clarifications are made. Secondly, the place of technology in the framework of the Popperian philosophy of history and society is examined. Thirdly, some problems in connection with the Popperian “three worlds”’ theory and the place of technology therein are highlighted

Se discuten algunos aspectos de la interrelación entre autoficcionalidad, metaficcionalidad y búsqueda de la espiritualidad en dos textos del escritor uruguayo Jorge Mario Varlotta Levrero (1940–2004), mejor conocido por su nombre literario: ‘Mario Levrero’. En estos escritos, de fuerte carácter autobiográfico y autorreflexivo, se advierte la necesidad de emprender un proceso de autodescubrimiento y autoanálisis, y también la urgencia de recuperar una espiritualidad en crisis. Para llevar a cabo ambas tareas, Levrero descarta pretensiones de profundidad y solemnidad, optando, en cambio, por la representación de lo (aparentemente) banal e insignificante

Wasted Time. On the Postponement of Writing in Three Latin American Novels

In the last decades, many studies have proliferated on the different ways in which a specific modality of consumer society, characterized by an unbridled acceleration of the rhythms of production and work, affects the lives of millions of people, especially in highly industrialized nations. These studies suggest that the individuals, under the pressure of an increasingly accelerated and frenetic pace of life, are compelled to perform certain roles and achieve certain goals that, if satisfactorily fulfilled, could guarantee success, or, at least, social acceptance. But what happens when you cannot or do not want to perform and fulfil such roles and expectations “fast” enough, when the individual prolongs or just abandons the entrusted task? In the richly diverse world of Latin American fiction, many writers have tackled this question. In base of three novels of different years: “El libro vacío” (1958), by the Mexican Josefina Vicens, “Wasabi” (1994), by the Argentine Alan Pauls, and “La novela luminosa” (2005), by the Uruguayan Mario Levrero, this paper comments the role played in contemporary fiction by the figure of the apathic, indolent or just slow-moving writer. The main characters of those novels seem to live in a slow-time dimension opposed to the fast one dominant in late modernity

La técnica como símbolo y forma objetiva en la filosofía de la cultura

In this paper, Ernst Cassirer's (1874-1945) and Hans Freyer's (1887-1969)interpretations of technology are presented, briefly compared and discussed. On the one side, Cassirer insisted, with his identification of technology as a symbolic form, on the necessary creative freedom for the development of culture and self-knowledge of man. On the other side,Freyer, from a neohegelian viewpoint, emphazised how the human spirit expresses himself in objective cultural forms, such as technology. The problem of the autonomy of technology or technological determinism is assessed within the philosophical framework of each author. Although neither Cassirer nor Freyer provide a final answer concerning that problem,it is possible to derive from both thinkers a strong defence of human autonomy and freedom in history

Un esbozo comparativo de la ensayística de Zbigniew Herbert con textos hispánicos

Se propone una relectura de algunos ensayos de Zbigniew Herbert con base en una comparación con textos de Octavio Paz y Rafael Argullol. Se comentan los siguientes temas: características del ensayo literario, el viaje como desplazamiento geográfico y experiencia espiritual, la relación entre individuo e historia, y la visión moderadamente escéptica de la cultura occidental, presente, en distintos grados, en los tres autores.A re-reading of some of Zbigniew Herbert’s essays is proposed in base of a comparison with texts by Octavio Paz and Rafael Argullol. The following topics are commented: characteristics of the literary essay, the travel as geographical displacement and spiritual experience, the relationship between the individual and history, and the moderately skeptical view of Western culture, present, in different degrees, in the three authors
