Simulations of the dynamic switching of vortex chirality in magnetic nanodisks by a uniform field pulse

We present a possibility to switch the chirality of a spin vortex occurring in a magnetic nanodisk by applying a uniform in-plane field pulse, based on optimizing its strength and duration. The related spin-dynamical process, investigated by micromagnetic simulations, consists of several stages. After applying the field, the original vortex is expelled from the disk, after which two C-shaped states oscillate between each other. The essence of the method is based on turning the field off at a suitably chosen moment for which the orientation of the C-state will evolve into the nucleation of a vortex with the desirable chirality. This idea simply uses the information about the original chirality present inside the nanodisk during the dynamic process before losing it in saturation, and can thus be regarded as analogous to the recent studies on the polarity switching.Comment: In this version only small formal changes are mad

Advances in Optical and Magnetooptical Scatterometry of Periodically Ordered Nanostructured Arrays

    Get PDF
We review recent advances in optical and magnetooptical (MO) scatterometry applied to periodically ordered nanostructures such as periodically patterned lines, wires, dots, or holes. The techniques are based on spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE), either in the basic or generalized modes, Mueller matrix polarimetry, and MO spectroscopy mainly based on MO Kerr effect measurements. We briefly present experimental setups, commonly used theoretical approaches, and experimental results obtained by SE and MO spectroscopic analyses of various samples. The reviewed analyses are mainly related to monitoring optical critical dimensions such as the widths, depths, and periods of the patterned elements, their real shapes, and their line edge or linewidth roughness. We also discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the optical spectroscopic techniques compared to direct monitoring techniques

Fourier factorization with complex polarization bases in the plane-wave expansion method applied to two-dimensional photonic crystals

We demonstrate an enhancement of the plane wave expansion method treating two-dimensional photonic crystals by applying Fourier factorization with generally elliptic polarization bases. By studying three examples of periodically arranged cylindrical elements, we compare our approach to the classical Ho method in which the permittivity function is simply expanded without changing coordinates, and to the normal vector method using a normal-tangential polarization transform. The compared calculations clearly show that our approach yields the best convergence properties owing to the complete continuity of our distribution of polarization bases. The presented methodology enables us to study more general systems such as periodic elements with an arbitrary cross-section or devices such as photonic crystal waveguides

Temperature-dependent Faraday rotation and magnetization reorientation in cerium-substituted yttrium iron garnet thin films

    Get PDF
We report on the temperature dependence of the magnetic and magneto-optical properties in cerium-substituted yttrium iron garnet (Ce: YIG) thin films. Measurements of the Faraday rotation as a function of temperature show that the magnetic easy axis of thin Ce: YIG films reorients from in-plane to out-of-plane on cooling below -100 degrees C. We argue that the temperature-dependence of the magnetostriction and magnetocrystalline anisotropy of Ce: YIG is the dominant factor contributing to the change in easy axis direction, and we describe the changes in the magneto-optical spectra with temperature.National Science Foundation (U.S.) (Award ECCS-1607865)United States. Band structure of CuMnAs probed by optical and photoemission spectroscopy

5 pages, 5 figures + Supplementary InformationTetragonal phase of CuMnAs progressively appears as one of the key materials for antiferromagnetic spintronics due to efficient current-induced spin-orbit torques whose existence can be directly inferred from crystal symmetry. Theoretical understanding of spintronic phenomena in this material, however, relies on the detailed knowledge of electronic structure (band structure and corresponding wave functions) which has so far been tested only to a limited extent. We show that AC permittivity (obtained from ellipsometry) and UV photoelectron spectra agree with density functional calculations. Together with the x-ray diffraction and precession electron diffraction tomography, our analysis confirms recent theoretical claim [Phys.Rev.B 96, 094406 (2017)] that copper atoms occupy lattice positions in the basal plane of the tetragonal unit cell.We acknowledge support from National Grid Infrastructure MetaCentrum provided under the programme “Projects of Large Research, Development, and Innovations Infrastructures” (CESNET LM2015042); Grant Agency of the Czech Republic under Grant No. 15-13436S; CEDAMNF (CZ.02.1.01/0.0/0.0/15_003/0000358) of the Czech ministry of education (MŠMT) as well as its LM2015087 and LNSMLNSpin grants; Cariplo Foundation, Grant No. 2013-0726 (MAGISTER); Spanish MINECO under MAT2015-67593-P project and the ‘Severo Ochoa’ Programme (SEV-2015-0496); EU FET Open RIA Grant No. 766566; Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council Grant No. EP/P019749/1.
