The Properties of Brightest Cluster Galaxies in X-Ray Selected Clusters
We present the K-band Hubble diagram for 162 brightest cluster galaxies
(BCGs) in X-ray selected clusters, 0.01<z<0.83. The sample incorporates that of
Burke, Collins, & Mann (2000) and includes additional infrared data from the
2MASS extended source catalogue. We show that below z=0.1 the BCGs show no
correlation with their environment, however, above z=0.1 BCGs in more X-ray
luminous clusters are more uniform in their photometric properties. This
suggests that there may be two populations of BCGs which have different
evolutionary histories.Comment: 2 pages, to appear in the proceedings of the Sesto 2001 conference on

An ectromelia virus profilin homolog interacts with cellular tropomyosin and viral A-type inclusion protein

Abstract

Background

Profilins are critical to cytoskeletal dynamics in eukaryotes; however, little is known about their viral counterparts. In this study, a poxviral profilin homolog, ectromelia virus strain Moscow gene 141 (ECTV-PH), was investigated by a variety of experimental and bioinformatics techniques to characterize its interactions with cellular and viral proteins.

Results

Profilin-like proteins are encoded by all orthopoxviruses sequenced to date, and share over 90% amino acid (aa) identity. Sequence comparisons show highest similarity to mammalian type 1 profilins; however, a conserved 3 aa deletion in mammalian type 3 and poxviral profilins suggests that these homologs may be more closely related. Structural analysis shows that ECTV-PH can be successfully modelled onto both the profilin 1 crystal structure and profilin 3 homology model, though few of the surface residues thought to be required for binding actin, poly(L-proline), and PIP2 are conserved. Immunoprecipitation and mass spectrometry identified two proteins that interact with ECTV-PH within infected cells: alpha-tropomyosin, a 38 kDa cellular actin-binding protein, and the 84 kDa product of vaccinia virus strain Western Reserve (VACV-WR) 148, which is the truncated VACV counterpart of the orthopoxvirus A-type inclusion (ATI) protein. Western and far-western blots demonstrated that the interaction with alpha-tropomyosin is direct, and immunofluorescence experiments suggest that ECTV-PH and alpha-tropomyosin may colocalize to structures that resemble actin tails and cellular protrusions. Sequence comparisons of the poxviral ATI proteins show that although full-length orthologs are only present in cowpox and ectromelia viruses, an ~ 700 aa truncated ATI protein is conserved in over 90% of sequenced orthopoxviruses. Immunofluorescence studies indicate that ECTV-PH localizes to cytoplasmic inclusion bodies formed by both truncated and full-length versions of the viral ATI protein. Furthermore, colocalization of ECTV-PH and truncated ATI protein to protrusions from the cell surface was observed.

Conclusion

These results suggest a role for ECTV-PH in intracellular transport of viral proteins or intercellular spread of the virus. Broader implications include better understanding of the virus-host relationship and mechanisms by which cells organize and control the actin cytoskeleton.</p
The environmental dependence of galaxy colors in intermediate-redshift X‐ray–selected clusters
We present a wide-field imaging study of the colors of bright galaxies (∗ + 2) in a sample of 12 X-ray–selected clusters and groups of galaxies at z ~ 0:3. The systems cover one of the largest ranges in X-ray luminosity (Lx ~ 1043 1045 ergs s-1), and hence mass, of any sample studied at this redshift. We find that the ‘‘red’’ galaxies form a tight color-magnitude relation (CMR) and that neither the slope nor zero point of this relation changes significantly over the factor of 100 in X-ray luminosity covered by our sample. Using stellar population synthesis models, we find that our data allow a maximum possible change of 2 Gyr in the typical age of the ‘‘red’’ galaxies on the CMR over the range of Lx of our sample. We also measure the fraction of blue galaxies (fb) relative to the CMR in our clusters and find a low value of fb ~ 0.1 consistent with other X-ray–selected cluster samples. We find that there is no correlation between fb and Lx over our large Lx range. However, we do find that both the CMR and fb depend significantly on cluster radius, with the zero point of the CMR shifting blueward in B - R by 0.10 ± 0.036 mag out to a radius of 0.75 times the virial radius. This color change is equivalent to a luminosity-weighted age gradient of ~2.5 Gyr per log (radius) and is consistent with previous studies of the radial change in the zero point of the CMR. It thus appears
that the global cluster environment, in the form of cluster mass (Lx), has little influence on the properties of the bright cluster galaxies, whereas the local environment, in the form of galaxy density (radius), has a strong effect. The range of ~100 in Lx corresponds to a factor of ~40 in ram pressure efficiency, thus suggesting that ram pressure stripping or other mechanisms that depend on cluster mass, like tidal stripping or harassment, are unlikely to be solely responsible for changing the galaxy population from the ‘‘blue’’ star-forming galaxies, which dominate low-density
environments, to the ‘‘red’’ passive galaxies, which dominate cluster cores
Mechanism of Vanadium Leaching during Surface Weathering of Basic Oxygen Furnace Steel Slag Blocks: A Microfocus X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy and Electron Microscopy Study
© 2017 American Chemical Society. Basic oxygen furnace (BOF) steelmaking slag is enriched in potentially toxic V which may become mobilized in high pH leachate during weathering. BOF slag was weathered under aerated and air-excluded conditions for 6 months prior to SEM/EDS and μXANES analysis to determine V host phases and speciation in both primary and secondary phases. Leached blocks show development of an altered region in which free lime and dicalcium silicate phases were absent and Ca-Si-H was precipitated (CaCO 3 was also present under aerated conditions). μXANES analyses show that V was released to solution as V(V) during dicalcium silicate dissolution and some V was incorporated into neo-formed Ca-Si-H. Higher V concentrations were observed in leachate under aerated conditions than in the air-excluded leaching experiment. Aqueous V concentrations were controlled by Ca 3 (VO 4 ) 2 solubility, which demonstrate an inverse relationship between Ca and V concentrations. Under air-excluded conditions Ca concentrations were controlled by dicalcium silicate dissolution and Ca-Si-H precipitation, leading to relatively high Ca and correspondingly low V concentrations. Formation of CaCO 3 under aerated conditions provided a sink for aqueous Ca, allowing higher V concentrations limited by kinetic dissolution rates of dicalcium silicate. Thus, V release may be slowed by the precipitation of secondary phases in the altered region, improving the prospects for slag reuse
A Photometric Survey for Variables and Transits in the Field of Praesepe with KELT
The Kilodegree Extremely Little Telescope (KELT) project is a small aperture,
wide-angle search for planetary transits of solar-type stars. In this paper, we
present the results of a commissioning campaign with the KELT telescope to
observe the open cluster Praesepe for 34 nights in early 2005. Lightcurves were
obtained for 69,337 stars, out of which we identify 58 long period variables
and 152 periodic variables. Sixteen of these are previously known as variable,
yielding 194 newly discovered variable stars for which we provide properties
and lightcurves. We also searched for planetary-like transits, finding four
transit candidates. Follow-up observations indicate that two of the candidates
are astrophysical false positives, with two candidates remaining as potential
planetary transits.Comment: 45 pages, 16 figures. Submitted to AJ. PDF version with full

Ozone depletion, greenhouse gases, and climate change
This symposium was organized to study the unusual convergence of a number of observations, both short and long term that defy an integrated explanation. Of particular importance are surface temperature observations and observations of upper atmospheric temperatures, which have declined significantly in parts of the stratosphere. There has also been a dramatic decline in ozone concentration over Antarctica that was not predicted. Significant changes in precipitation that seem to be latitude dependent have occurred. There has been a threefold increase in methane in the last 100 years; this is a problem because a source does not appear to exist for methane of the right isotopic composition to explain the increase. These and other meteorological global climate changes are examined in detail
A global view of gene expression in lithium and zinc treated sea urchin embryos: new components of gene regulatory networks
Novel territory-specific markers from the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus purpuratus have been identified using screens for genes that are differentially expressed in lithium-treated embryos, which form an excess of endomesoderm, and in zinc-treated embryos, in which endomesoderm specification is blocked
A prescription for the Epley maneuver: www.youtube.com?
OBJECTIVES: Video-sharing Web sites are being used for information about common conditions including dizziness. The Epley maneuver (EM) is a simple and effective treatment for benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) of the posterior canal. However, the maneuver is underused in routine care. In this study, we aimed to describe and analyze the available information about the EM on youtube.com.
METHODS: A YouTube search was performed on August 31, 2011, for videos that demonstrated the entire EM. Detailed data were abstracted from each video and corresponding Web site. Videos were rated on the accuracy of the maneuver by 2 authors, with differences resolved by adjudication. Comments posted by viewers were assessed for themes regarding video use.
RESULTS: Of the 3,319 videos identified, 33 demonstrated the EM. The total number of hits for all videos was 2,755,607. The video with the most hits (802,471) was produced by the American Academy of Neurology. Five of the videos accounted for 85% of all the hits. The maneuver demonstration was rated as accurate in 64% (21) of the videos. Themes derived from the 424 posted comments included patients self-treating with the maneuver after reviewing the videos, and providers using the videos as a prescribed treatment or for educational purposes.
CONCLUSION: Accurate video demonstration of the Epley maneuver is available and widely viewed on YouTube. Video-sharing media may be an important way to disseminate effective interventions such as the EM. The impact of video Web sites on outcomes and costs of care is not known and warrants future study
