Effect of transnasal insufflation on sleep disordered breathing in acute stroke: a preliminary study
Background and Purpose: Sleep disordered breathing (SDB) is frequent in acute stroke patients and is associated with early neurologic worsening and poor outcome. Although continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) effectively treats SDB, compliance is low. The objective of the present study was to assess the tolerance and the efficacy of a continuous high-flow-rate air administered through an open nasal cannula (transnasal insufflation, TNI), a less-intrusive method, to treat SDB in acute stroke patients. Methods: Ten patients (age, 56.8 ± 10.7years), with SDB ranging from moderate to severe (apnea-hypopnea index, AHI, >15/h of sleep) and on a standard sleep study at a mean of 4.8 ± 3.7days after ischemic stroke (range, 1-15days), were selected. The night after, they underwent a second sleep study while receiving TNI (18L/min). Results: TNI was well tolerated by all patients. For the entire group, TNI decreased the AHI from 40.4 ± 25.7 to 30.8 ± 25.7/h (p = 0.001) and the oxygen desaturation index >3% from 40.7 ± 28.4 to 31 ± 22.5/h (p = 0.02). All participants except one showed a decrease in AHI. The percentage of slow-wave sleep significantly increased with TNI from 16.7 ± 8.2% to 22.3 ± 7.4% (p = 0.01). There was also a trend toward a reduction in markers of sleep disruption (number of awakenings, arousal index). Conclusions: TNI improves SDB indices, and possibly sleep parameters, in stroke patients. Although these changes are modest, our findings suggest that TNI is a viable treatment alternative to CPAP in patients with SDB in the acute phase of ischemic strok
Chilean press and gender violence: the case of Nabila Rifo Ruiz
This article, is the result of an investigation that studies the information consigned by four Chilean national media on the case of frustrated femicide committed against Nabila Rifo Ruiz, a Chilean woman whose eyeballs were ripped out. From the application of categorical content analysis, it was possible to raise the representation of the domestic spaces that served as the scene of the crime, as well as to identify the similarities and differences consigned within the information referred to this case and to determine the representation constructed around the victim and the perpetrator, protagonists of the analyzed news event. The study findings confirm the problematic role played by mass media in terms of contributing to perpetuate stereotypes that tend to establish mitigating factors in relation to the acts committed by the perpetrator and to maintain preconceived ideas about the personality of women victims of gender violence.Facultad de Periodismo y Comunicación Socia

GEOSISMO: Visualisation of Events and Seismologic Characteristics in the Internet
An inventory of seismic movements at global level exists that is based on the data gathered by the seismographers of each observatory. This inventory includes the location and characteristics of the technical equipment of the observatories, as well as the location and date of each earthquake. The inventory is stored in an Access database, and the accelerograms (temporal series of accelerations) are stored in text files. It is proposed that a web service based in a Web Feature Service be created, following the specifications of the OGC (Open Geospatial Consortium), that would visualize the location of the seismographers and of the epicenters of the earthquakes for the spatial and temporal intervals provided. The representation of the places will be a geometric symbol proportional to the PGA magnitude, based on information extracted automatically by the system. When the context (number of elements to represent or zoom level) permit it, the accelerograms will be visualized as scaled in proportion to the magnitude of seismic activity instead of as a geometric symbol. This type of visualization will facilitate interpretation and a rapid decision when the page is consulted. This objective will be enhanced by the possibility of visualizing the information from anyplace that has Internet access, because the tool will be configured as a piece of SDI in conformance with OGC standards
More on correlators and contact terms in {\cal N}=4 SYM at order g^4
We compute two-point functions of chiral operators Tr(\Phi^k) for any k, in
{\cal N}=4 supersymmetric SU(N) Yang-Mills theory. We find that up to the order
g^4 the perturbative corrections to the correlators vanish for all N. The
cancellation occurs in a highly non trivial way, due to a complicated interplay
between planar and non planar diagrams. In complete generality we show that
this same result is valid for any simple gauge group. Contact term
contributions signal the presence of ultraviolet divergences. They are
arbitrary at the tree level, but the absence of perturbative renormalization in
the non singular part of the correlators allows to compute them unambiguously
at higher orders. In the spirit of the AdS/CFT correspondence we comment on
their relation to infrared singularities in the supergravity sector.Comment: 21 pages, 4 figure
