    First Record of the Deepwater Sculpin, Myoxocephalus thompsonii, from George Lake in Whiteshell Provincial Park, Manitoba

    Two adult female specimens of Deepwater Sculpin, Myoxocephalus thompsonii, were collected by gillnet from George Lake near Point Du Bois, Manitoba, 36.8 km east of Lac Du Bonnet on 21 September 2000. This constitutes the first confirmed occurrence of the species in George Lake. The only other Manitoba lakes with known populations of Deepwater Sculpin are Lake Athapapuskow and West Hawk Lake. Deepwater Sculpins have also been collected from Reindeer Lake; however, these individuals were collected from the deeper Saskatchewan side of the lake

    The use of mid-infrared spectrometry to predict body energy status of Holstein cows

    Energy balance, especially in early lactation, is known to be associated with subsequent health and fertility in dairy cows. However, its inclusion in routine management decisions or breeding programs is hindered by the lack of quick, easy, and inexpensive measures of energy balance. The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential of mid-infrared (MIR) analysis of milk, routinely available from all milk samples taken as part of large-scale milk recording and milk payment operations, to predict body energy status and related traits in lactating dairy cows. The body energy status traits investigated included energy balance and body energy content. The related traits of body condition score and energy intake were also considered. Measurements on these traits along with milk MIR spectral data were available on 17 different test days from 268 cows (418 lactations) and were used to develop the prediction equations using partial least squares regression. Predictions were externally validated on different independent subsets of the data and the results averaged. The average accuracy of predicting body energy status from MIR spectral data was as high as 75% when energy balance was measured across lactation. These predictions of body energy status were considerably more accurate than predictions obtained from the sometimes proposed fat-to-protein ratio in milk. It is not known whether the prediction generated from MIR data are a better reflection of the true (unknown) energy status than the actual energy status measures used in this study. However, results indicate that the approach described may be a viable method of predicting individual cow energy status for a large scale of application

    Evidence for Non-Anadromous Behaviour of Arctic Charr (Salvelinus alpinus) from Lake Hazen, Ellesmere Island, Northwest Territories, Canada, Based on Scanning Proton Microprobe Analysis of Otolith Strontium Distribution

    Scanning proton microprobe analysis was used to determine the distribution of strontium (Sr) in otoliths from arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) of known non-anadromous, known anadromous, and unknown life histories. Strontium concentration patterns in otoliths of known non-anadromous charr were low and relatively flat (with little variation) from the core area to the outermost edge of the otolith, while patterns for known anadromous charr were characterized by a similar low, flat region for the first several years of life, followed by marked oscillatory increases and decreases in Sr content for the duration of the fish's life. Small and large forms of Lake Hazen charr of unknown life histories exhibited Sr profiles that were similar to those of the known non-anadromous charr, which strongly suggest that Lake Hazen charr are non-anadromous. These results indicate that Lake Hazen is a "closed" system with energy cycling primarily within the system; this conclusion suggests that a conservative approach would be appropriate for the management of the Lake Hazen charr population.À l'aide d'une sonde protonique à balayage, on a procédé à une analyse afin de déterminer la répartition du strontium (Sr) dans des otolithes prélevés sur des ombles chevaliers (Salvelinus alpinus) ayant eu soit un cycle biologique non anadrome connu, soit un cycle anadrome connu ou un cycle inconnu. Les courbes de concentration en strontium dans les otolithes d'ombles reconnus comme non anadromes étaient faibles et relativement uniformes (montrant peu de fluctuations) en allant du centre de l'otolithe vers la périphérie, tandis que les courbes relatives aux ombles reconnus comme anadromes se caractérisaient par une zone de concentrations faibles et uniformes pour plusieurs des premières années de vie, suivie par des oscillations à la hausse et à la baisse très nettes quant au contenu en Sr pour la durée de vie du poisson. De gros et de petits spécimens d'ombles au cycle biologique inconnu, trouvés dans le lac Hazen, affichaient des profils de Sr semblables à ceux des ombles reconnus comme non anadromes, ce qui suggère fortement que l'omble du lac Hazen est non anadrome. Ces résultats révèlent que le lac Hazen est un système où l'énergie circule surtout en circuit «fermé». Cette conclusion suggère qu'il faudrait adopter une approche prudente quant à la gestion de la population d'ombles du lac Hazen

    Mosquito coil emissions and health implications.

    Burning mosquito coils indoors generates smoke that can control mosquitoes effectively. This practice is currently used in numerous households in Asia, Africa, and South America. However, the smoke may contain pollutants of health concern. We conducted the present study to characterize the emissions from four common brands of mosquito coils from China and two common brands from Malaysia. We used mass balance equations to determine emission rates of fine particles (particulate matter < 2.5 microm in diameter; PM(2.5)), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), aldehydes, and ketones. Having applied these measured emission rates to predict indoor concentrations under realistic room conditions, we found that pollutant concentrations resulting from burning mosquito coils could substantially exceed health-based air quality standards or guidelines. Under the same combustion conditions, the tested Malaysian mosquito coils generated more measured pollutants than did the tested Chinese mosquito coils. We also identified a large suite of volatile organic compounds, including carcinogens and suspected carcinogens, in the coil smoke. In a set of experiments conducted in a room, we examined the size distribution of particulate matter contained in the coil smoke and found that the particles were ultrafine and fine. The findings from the present study suggest that exposure to the smoke of mosquito coils similar to the tested ones can pose significant acute and chronic health risks. For example, burning one mosquito coil would release the same amount of PM(2.5) mass as burning 75-137 cigarettes. The emission of formaldehyde from burning one coil can be as high as that released from burning 51 cigarettes

    ESBL displace: a protocol for an observational study to identify displacing Escherichia coli strain candidates from ESBL-colonized travel returners using phenotypic, genomic sequencing and metagenome analysis

    Introduction: Invading extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Escherichia coli (ESBL-PE), non-ESBL E. coli, and other bacteria form a complex environment in the gut. The duration and dynamics of ESBL-PE colonization varies among individuals. Understanding the factors associated with colonization may lead to decolonization strategies. In this study, we aim to identify (i) single E. coli strains and (ii) microbiome networks that correlate with retention or decline of colonization, and (iii) pan-sensitive E. coli strains that potentially could be used to displace ESBL-PE during colonization. Methods and analysis: We recruit healthy travellers to Southeast Asia for a one-year prospective observational follow-up study. We collect and biobank stool, serum, and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) at predefined timepoints. Additional information is collected with questionnaires. We determine the colonization status with ESBL-PE and non-ESBL E. coli and quantify cell densities in stools and ratios over time. We characterize multiple single bacterial isolates per patient and timepoint using whole genome sequencing (WGS) and 16S/ITS amplicon-based and shotgun metagenomics. We determine phylogenetic relationships between isolates, antimicrobial resistance (AMR; phenotypic and genotypic), and virulence genes. We describe the bacterial and fungal stool microbiome alpha and beta diversity on 16S/ITS metagenomic data. We describe patterns in microbiome dynamics to identify features associated with protection or risk of ESBL-PE colonization. Ethics and dissemination: The study is registered (clinicaltrials.gov; NCT04764500 on 09/02/2019) and approved by the Ethics Committee (EKNZ project ID 2019-00044). We will present anonymized results at conferences and in scientific journals. Bacterial sequencing data will be shared via publicly accessible databases according to FAIR principles

    Spatio-Temporal Variation in Length-Weight Relationships and Condition of the Ribbonfish Trichiurus lepturus (Linnaeus, 1758): Implications for Fisheries Management

    Knowledge of length-weight relationships for commercially exploited fish is an important tool for assessing and managing of fish stocks. However, analyses of length-weight relationship fisheries data typically do not consider the inherent differences in length-weight relationships for fish caught from different habitats, seasons, or years, and this can affect the utility of these data for developing condition indices or calculating fisheries biomass. Here, we investigated length-weight relationships for ribbonfish Trichiurus lepturus in the waters of the Arabian Sea off Oman collected during three periods (2001-02, 2007-08, and 2014-15) and showed that a multivariate modelling approach that considers the areas and seasons in which ribbonfish were caught improved estimation of length-weight relationships. We used the outputs of these models to explore spatio-temporal variations in condition indices and relative weights among ribbonfish, revealing fish of 85-125 cm were in the best overall condition. We also found that condition differed according to where and when fish were caught, with condition lowest during spring and pre-south-west monsoon periods and highest during and after the south-west monsoons. We interpret these differences to be a consequence of variability in temperature and food availability. Based on our findings, we suggest fishing during seasons that have the lowest impact on fish condition and which are commercially most viable; such fishery management would enhance fisheries conservation and economic revenue in the region
