Gender balance in ECEC : why is there s little progres?
Social attitudes about male participation in the upbringing of children have changed considerably over the past few decades. Men are now seen as important for children’s development and learning. Research from many countries worldwide shows that in early childhood care and education (ECEC), male workers are welcomed by female colleagues and parents. In the last two decades there have been initiatives for more men in ECEC in several European countries.
Nevertheless the proportion of male workers ECEC remains low worldwide. This article questions the persisting gender imbalance in ECEC and analyzes ambivalences regarding more men in the field. Based on recent gender theory, efforts and limits of strategies for more male students and workers in ECEC in Belgium, Norway and Germany are discussed. It is concluded that deeply held gendered attitudes and practices in the field of care and educational work with young children have to be put into question. More space in ECEC for embodied
subjectivities is needed to overcome essentialist conceptions of differences between body and mind, women and men
Determination of nutrient salts by automatic methods both in seawater and brackish water: the phosphate blank
9 páginas, 2 tablas, 2 figurasThe main inconvenience in determining nutrients in seawater by automatic methods is simply solved:
the preparation of a suitable blank which corrects the effect of the refractive index change on the recorded
signal. Two procedures are proposed, one physical (a simple equation to estimate the effect) and the other
chemical (removal of the dissolved phosphorus with ferric hydroxide).Support for this work came from CICYT (MAR88-0245 project) and

The association between neuroticism and heart rate variability is not fully explained by cardiovascular disease and depression
Neuroticism is associated with cardiovascular disease, autonomic reactivity, and depression. Here we address the extent to which neuroticism accounts for the excess heart disease risk associated with depression and test whether cardiac autonomic tone plays a role as mediator. Subjects were derived from a nationally representative sample (n = 1,255: mean age 54.5, SD = 11.5). Higher neuroticism was associated with reduced heart rate variability equally under rest and stress. The baseline structural equation model revealed significant paths from neuroticism to heart rate variability, cardiovascular disease and depression, and between depression and cardiovascular disease, controlling for age, sex, height, weight, and BMI. Dropping both the neuroticism to heart rate variability, and neuroticism to heart disease paths significantly reduced the model fit (p < .001 in each case). We conclude that neuroticism has independent associations with both autonomic reactivity and cardiovascular disease, over and above its associations with depression and other related variables
Identification of Novel Aldose Reductase Inhibitors Based on Carboxymethylated Mercaptotriazinoindole Scaffold
Fifteen compounds, sharing an indole-1-acetic
acid moiety as a
common fragment, were selected from commercial databases for testing
aldose reductase inhibition. 3-Mercapto-5<i>H</i>-1,2,4-triazino[5,6-<i>b</i>]indole-5-acetic acid (<b>13</b>) was the most promising
inhibitor, with an IC50 in the submicromolar range and
high selectivity, relative to aldehyde reductase. The crystal structure
of aldose reductase complexed with <b>13</b> revealed an interaction
pattern explaining its high affinity. Physicochemical parameters underline
the excellent “leadlikeness” of <b>13</b> as a
promising candidate for further structure optimizations
