    Get PDF
This research, deals with modification of sol gel process for the synthesis of porous TiO2-PEG thin films with good structural integrity for environmental self-cleaning applications. Relatively, by adding the PEG with various molecular weights (300, 400, and 600) could influence the formation of TiO2 films structure and adhesion. Moreover, the formation of porous TiO2 associated with larger pores will accelerate the mass transfer of the treated contaminants in the larger pore channels. The advantages of the unique structures of as-prepared TiO2₂ films in the application of environmental self-cleaning systems are extensively studied by characterizing the produced films using various advanced characterization tools. Adhesion of TiO2 thin films become smooth and better surface with increasing the coating layers. The X-ray Diffraction spectrum of prepared coating shows present of anatase phase as major phase

    Get PDF
Virtual environment should be able to replicate real environment as realistic as possible. This paper proposes a design framework for constructing virtual environments using Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Virtual Reality (VR) packages, or in short, CAD-VR approach. This paper discusses the technical issues involved based on the experience in developing two prototype models of the Universiti Utara Malaysia Sports Complex and Sultanah Bahiyah Library. The benchmark of the development is the compatibility of the three dimensional (3D) CAD models with VR packages. The CAD modelling issues that have been encountered throughout the development stages are also discussed for future guidelines

The MPCL with eleven dimensions was administered to 252 respondents whowere selected from seven polytechnic institutions in Malaysia. The analysis was conductedusing WINSTEPS 3.71.0.1 in order to examine the psychometric properties such as item fit statistics, unidimensionality, local independence, item polarity, reliability, separation index and item-person map with reference to Rasch measurement model. The results obtained showed that 244 items from 327 items was found to have fulfilled the main assumptions and measurement criteria of Rasch measurement model. This study provides significant contribution to improving the scale development and validation of MPCL instrument modification using the Rasch measurement model Malaysia. Keywords: Mooney Problem Checklist; adversities; polytechnic; Raschmeasurement mode

Combined modal parameters-based index for damage identification in a beamlike structure: theoretical development and verification

    Get PDF
A new index for detecting the damage severity in structural elements by combining modal parameters is proposed in this study. The index is based on the combined effect of both the natural frequencies and mode shapes when a change in stiffness of the structural element occurs. In order to demonstrate the significance and capability of this new algorithm, the magnitude of damage was calculated from a finite element model of a beam-like structure model and comparisons with previous algorithms were carried out. The new index called Combined Parameter Index (CPI) compares the factor of reduction in stiffness according to reduction in natural frequencies and also the factor of reduction in stiffness according to change in mode shape. Various damage levels starting from reduction in stiffness of 1 were adopted to validate the sensitivity of the new index to detect the damage severity at various deterioration levels. Mid-span and quarter-span damage positions were adopted to verify the capability of the new damage index to detect the damage severity at various locations. Moreover, damage in support condition was investigated in order to ascertain that the new damage index can also identify support damage cases. The results indicate that the new index has better ability and higher sensitivity to determine the severity of the damage due to stiffness changes in the element or support. In addition, the CPI exhibits sensitivity to detect lower level of damage occurring at earlier stage by having the ability to detect a damage of 1 reduction in the structural element stiffness or elastic bearing stiffness

Teachers’ Perceptions on Women in STEM: Breaking the Stereotypes

    Get PDF
Drawing on an online professional development modular course that addressed critical approaches to the issues of race, immigration, English Language Learners (ELLs)/Emerging Bilinguals (EBs), and gender and sexual orientation, this paper reports teachers’ perceptions on gender stereotypes in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education. In particular, building on the course readings, we discuss teachers’ emergent approaches to address gender stereotypes in teaching practice that improve girls\u27 participation in STEM fields. Data is collected from a pre-course survey and teachers’ discussions during the course. Centering on the course readings from theoretical and empirical research that address gender issues, discussion prompts were used to elicit teachers’ insights on gender stereotypes in education. A thematic analysis method was then employed to discuss strategies for challenging gender stereotypes in teaching practice from teachers’ discussion posts. Teachers recognize that gender stereotypes have been embedded in the social norms that influence teachers’ practice in an underlying way. Three promising strategies are identified to address gender stereotypes in STEM education, including integrating role models into the curriculum, developing a growth mindset, and promoting justice classroom discourse. We also discussed ways to support teachers in addressing gender stereotypes in their practices

Factors Towards Voluntary Turnover Among Employees in Malaysia Banking Institution

    Get PDF
Voluntary Turnover refers to the decision of an employee to leave their organization based on their own intention and self-control. Thus this condition may give negative affects to one organization in terms of monetary, productivity and time deficit. The paper aimed to explore the relationship between factors namely job satisfaction, career adaptability, turnover intention and pay towards voluntary turnover in the banking sector. Self-administered questionnaire is distributed conveniently among respondents from several departments known as Human Resources, Marketing, Retail Rehabilitation, Branch Operation Processing, Treasury and Investigation Audit. The study uses SPSS (Scientific Package for Social Sciences) to specified frequencies distribution, reliability analysis, correlation coefficient (Pearson’s) and regression analysis. The analysis proved that there is a significant relationship between voluntary turnover and three independent variables (turnover intention, job satisfaction and pay). The result revealed that the turnover intention is the most influence factor toward voluntary turnover.     Keywords: Voluntary Turnover; Job Satisfaction; Career Adaptability; Turnover Intention; Pa

Teaching Emergent Bilinguals: How In-service Teachers’ Perception of First Language Acquisition Theories Inform Practice

    Get PDF
Different writers, linguists, and researchers present nuances in language acquisition theories. However, few studies explore in-service teachers’ voices in such discourses. It is, therefore, imperative to explore the voices of in-service teachers in such narratives as they teach emergent bilinguals (EBs) and culturally and linguistically diverse students. This paper examined how in-service teachers perceive First Language Acquisition (FLA) theories and how those perceptions influence teaching EBs and informing classroom practice. Centering on Freeman and Freeman’s discussion of five FLA theories (imitation, reinforcement, behaviorist, social interaction, active construction, connectionist), we argue that in-service teachers’ perceptions of first language acquisition theories impact how they teach and engage EBs in their classrooms. Findings show that in-service teachers consider the social interaction theory most beneficial to students’ language development. However, the precariousness of FLA theories makes it challenging for them to determine the best approach to teaching EBs. Additionally, teacher education programs and critical professional development (PD) courses are instrumental in fostering understanding and robust pedagogical mindsets and preparing teachers to meet the needs of emergent bilinguals. &nbsp
