Failing boys and moral panics: perspectives on the underachievement debate
The paper re-examines the underachievement debate from the perspective of the âdiscourse of derisionâ that surrounds much writing in this area. It considers the contradictions and inconsistencies which underpin much of the discourse â from a reinterpretation of examination scores, to the conflation of the concepts of âunderâ and âlowâ achievement and finally to the lack of consensus on a means of defining and measuring the term underachievement. In doing so, this paper suggests a more innovative approach for understanding, re-evaluating and perhaps rejecting the notion of underachievement
An Algebraic Spin and Statistics Theorem
A spin-statistics theorem and a PCT theorem are obtained in the context of
the superselection sectors in Quantum Field Theory on a 4-dimensional
space-time. Our main assumption is the requirement that the modular groups of
the von Neumann algebras of local observables associated with wedge regions act
geometrically as pure Lorentz transformations. Such a property, satisfied by
the local algebras generated by Wightman fields because of the

Timelike surfaces of constant mean curvature 1 in anti-de Sitter 3-space
It is shown that timelike surfaces of constant mean curvature 1 in anti-de
Sitter 3-space can be constructed from a pair of Lorentz holomorphic and
Lorentz antiholomorphic null curves in PSL(2,R) via Bryant type representation
formulae. These formulae are used to investigate an explicit one-to-one
correspondence, the so-called Lawson correspondence, between timelike surfaces
of constant mean curvature 1 in anti-de Sitter 3-space and timelike minimal
surfaces in Minkowski 3-space. The hyperbolic Gauss map of timelike surfaces in
anti-de Sitter 3-space, which is a close analogue of the classical Gauss map is
considered. It is discussed that the hyperbolic Gauss map plays an important
role in the study of timelike surfaces of constant mean curvature 1 in anti-de
Sitter 3-space. In particular, the relationship between the Lorentz
holomorphicity of the hyperbolic Gauss map and timelike surfaces of constant

The role of dynamical polarization of the ligand to metal charge transfer excitations in {\em ab initio} determination of effective exchange parameters
The role of the bridging ligand on the effective Heisenberg coupling
parameters is analyzed in detail. This analysis strongly suggests that the
ligand-to-metal charge transfer excitations are responsible for a large part of
the final value of the magnetic coupling constant. This permits to suggest a
new variant of the Difference Dedicated Configuration Interaction (DDCI)
method, presently one of the most accurate and reliable for the evaluation of
magnetic effective interactions. This new method treats the bridging ligand
orbitals mediating the interaction at the same level than the magnetic orbitals
and preserves the high quality of the DDCI results while being much less
computationally demanding. The numerical accuracy of the new approach is
illustrated on various systems with one or two magnetic electrons per magnetic
center. The fact that accurate results can be obtained using a rather reduced
configuration interaction space opens the possibility to study more complex
systems with many magnetic centers and/or many electrons per center.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure
Finite temperature Casimir effect in piston geometry and its classical limit
We consider the Casimir force acting on a -dimensional rectangular piston
due to massless scalar field with periodic, Dirichlet and Neumann boundary
conditions and electromagnetic field with perfect electric conductor and
perfect magnetic conductor boundary conditions. It is verified analytically
that at any temperature, the Casimir force acting on the piston is always an
attractive force pulling the piston towards the interior region, and the
magnitude of the force gets larger as the separation gets smaller. Explicit
exact expressions for the Casimir force for small and large plate separations
and for low and high temperatures are computed. The limits of the Casimir force
acting on the piston when some pairs of transversal plates are large are also
derived. An interesting result regarding the influence of temperature is that
in contrast to the conventional result that the leading term of the Casimir
force acting on a wall of a rectangular cavity at high temperature is the
Stefan--Boltzmann (or black body radiation) term which is of order ,
it is found that the contributions of this term from the interior and exterior
regions cancel with each other in the case of piston. The high temperature
leading order term of the Casimir force acting on the piston is of order ,
which shows that the Casimir force has a nontrivial classical
limit
Manifesto of computational social science
The increasing integration of technology into our lives has created unprecedented volumes of data on society's everyday behaviour. Such data opens up exciting new opportunities to work towards a quantitative understanding of our complex social systems, within the realms of a new discipline known as Computational Social Science. Against a background of financial crises, riots and international epidemics, the urgent need for a greater comprehension of the complexity of our interconnected global society and an ability to apply such insights in policy decisions is clear. Performance of a computable phenotype for identification of patients with diabetes within PCORnet: The Patient-Centered Clinical Research Network
Purpose: PCORnet, the National Patient-Centered Clinical Research Network, represents an innovative system for the conduct of observational and pragmatic studies. We describe the identification and validation of a retrospective cohort of patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) from four PCORnet sites. Methods: We adapted existing computable phenotypes (CP) for the identification of patients with T2DM and evaluated their performance across four PCORnet sites (2012-2016). Patients entered the cohort on the earliest date they met one of three CP categories: (CP1) coded T2DM diagnosis (ICD-9/ICD-10) and an antidiabetic prescription, (CP2) diagnosis and glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) â„6.5%, or (CP3) an antidiabetic prescription and HbA1c â„6.5%. We required evidence of health care utilization in each of the 2 prior years for each patient, as we also developed an incident T2DM CP to identify the subset of patients without documentation of T2DM in the 365 days before t 0 . Among a systematic sample of patients, we calculated the positive predictive value (PPV) for the T2DM CP and incident-T2DM CP using electronic health record (EHR) review as reference. Results: The CP identified 50 657 patients with T2DM. The PPV of patients randomly selected for validation was 96.2% (n = 1572; CI:95.1-97.0) and was consistently high across sites. The PPV for the incident-T2DM CP was 5.8% (CI:4.5-7.5). Conclusions: The T2DM CP accurately and efficiently identified patients with T2DM across multiple sites that participate in PCORnet, although the incident T2DM CP requires further study. PCORnet is a valuable data source for future epidemiological and comparative effectiveness research among patients with T2DM
