Rethinking the concept of market orientation in the Portuguese non-profit sector:An exploratory study

    Get PDF
In the context of an increasing competitive environment, in which organisations are compelled to manage their resources and capabilities in a more efficient and effective way, the concept of marketing orientation has been acknowledged as highly important in the marketing and management literature. However, the existing literature is mainly focused on the for-profit sector, and to our best knowledge little research has been undertaken in the context of non-profit organisations. The purpose of this exploratory study is to test a measure of marketing orientation already used in previous studies and to assess its psychometric properties in the particular context of a Portuguese sample of nonprofit organisations

Marketing orientation and financial dependence: the specific case of portuguese non-profit organisations

Comunicação apresentada na 30th Arnova Annual Conference, Miami, Florida, 29 Nov.-1 Dez. 2001.It has been largely emphasised in the literature that a market orientation can provide important competitive advantages to organisations. However, for-profit organisations have so far been the focus of much of the market orientation research and less emphasis has been put on other organisational contexts, such as the non-profit sector. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to apply the construct of market orientation to the non-profit sector and to analyse the constraints that can be posed to an effective assimilation of this construct, namely the dependence of non-profit organisations on financial resources

The relationship between resource dependency and market orientation : the specific case of non-profit organisations (NPOs)

In the context of an increasingly competitive environment in which organisations are compelled to manage their resources and capabilities in more efficient and effective ways, the concept of market orientation has been acknowledged as highly important in the marketing and management literature. The existing literature, however, has mainly been focused on the for-profit sector and, to our best knowledge, little research has been undertaken in other organisational contexts, such as the non-profit sector. Given the specificity of NPOs and the increasingly demanding resource environments in which these organisations operate, the present study examines the extent to which resource dependence impacts the market orientation construct. The results of the first cross-sectional study on the market orientation of Portuguese NPOs are reported

Financial dependence and the adoption of the internet by non-profit organisations: The Portuguese case

    Get PDF
Despite the increasing popularity and potential associated with the use of Internet, nonprofit organisations are not adopting this new information technology with the same speed other sectors like business, Governments and universities do. Considering that the dependence from non-profit organisations on financial resources, can be related to a particular organisational profile, which is likely to influence the adoption of Internet by non-profit organisations, therefore, this paper attempts to analyse whether financial dependence influences or not the adoption of Internet, as well as, the perceived benefits and barriers associated with its use in a Portuguese sample of non-profit organisations

Análise das redes de stakeholders e qualidade de relacionamento em turismo: o caso do Parque Nacional Peneda Gerês

This paper draws insights from three key strategic management theories: the stakeholder theory, the network theory and the relationship quality theory. It examines how viable tourism policies could best be developed in PGNP, considering the stakeholder networks related to tourism, specifically by considering the relationship quality (trust, commitment and cooperation). Under this view it addresses the structure, nature and composition of ties among PNPG stakeholders using social network analysis (SNA) methodology, combining qualitative and quantitative techniques. Additionally, the study categorizes stakeholders according to the "stakeholder salience" model, illustrates the relationship quality among the network and stakeholder's positioning in a complex structure of relationships informing about interactions, providing possible directions to minimize potential constraints in networks.

The outset of U-I R&D relationships: the specific case of biological sciences

    Get PDF
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to draw insights from the actors-resources-activities (ARA) model and social capital literature to identify relevant activities shared by university-industry (U-I) actors prior to R&D cooperation. Design/methodology/approach – Based on a qualitative methodology, a series of interviews were carried out with researchers from the biological sciences domain. Findings – This study found that, at the outset of U-I links, companies’ motivations are strongly organizational, while academics are motivated at a personal level. The interactions grow from low-risk activities to partnerships on complex tasks, and depend on relational resources framed within the ARA and social capital theories. Results showed that shared interests are present at the outset of U-I links and grow thereafter. Trust and commitment were not ubiquitous at the outset, but rather at later stages of the cooperation, as a result of the developed interdependencies. Research limitations/implications – The combination of the ARA model and social capital in U-I links highlighted the different relationship levels (individual vs organizational), the disparities between early and established ties, and the interplay between low- and high-investment activities underlying researchers’ relationships. Several managerial contributions are presented for universities to promote greater integration with industry partners. Originality/value – A new direction of research is presented towards lower levels of U-I cooperation, taking into account the relational resources and the activities shared in each level. This work distinguished the different actors’ motivations and clarified the role of trust and commitment at the outset of U-I links. This first assessment of Portuguese U-I interactions within the biological sciences provided valuable insights for both academics and practitioners. This research was supported by a doctoral grant (Ref.: SFRH/BD/68802/2010) and by Portuguese funds from MEC/FCT through projects PEst-OE/BIA/UI4050/2014 and PEst-OE/EGE/UI4021/2011.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Entrepreneurial Orientation and Dynamic Capabilities

    Get PDF
Currently, small and medium enterprises that are family businesses (SMEFs) assume an important role in the global economy. Further, innovation and flexibility became vital to firms’ survival and prosperity in the market during these volatile times. Firms should not only possess critical resources, but also be able to recombine them. Characterized by resource restrictions, SMEFs can rely on dynamic capabilities to access resources and be competitive in the market. In this regard, networking capabilities (NC) and resource combinations (RC) such as exploitative and explorative product development and on market-related capabilities emerge as key dynamic capabilities. This chapter examines the role of Entrepreneurial Orientation (EO) on NC and RC. Using a qualitative method of in-depth case study, the chapter analyzes 12 Portuguese SMEFs.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The role of Social Capital towards resource sharing in collaborative R&D projects: Evidences from the 7th Framework Programme

    Get PDF
This study examines the role of Social capital dimensions towards resource sharing within R&D cooperation projects funded by the 7th Framework Programme (FP7). Data were collected in a survey of 553 FP7 project participants and analysed using two different social network analysis (SNA) methodologies: Logistic regression quadratic assignment procedure and exponential random graph models. Results showed that all Social Capital dimensions helped to explain partners' resource sharing, although to a different extent. Prior ties were often significant, whilst shared vision and commitment were very frequently positive contributors to resource sharing. Trust was rarely significant, and occasionally detrimental, to partners' resource sharing. Therefore, the FP7 provided a collaborative but opportunistic environment for public and private actors. The novelty of this study derives from the combination of social capital theory with SNA to study intra-project partner relationships, contributing to a better understanding on the diversity of partner relationships within R&D projects.FCT doctoral grant (SFRH/BD/68802/2010) with funds from POPH/National Strategic Reference Framework, subsidized by the European Social Fund and MEC funds, and by FCT/MEC through Portuguese funds (PIDDAC)-PEst-OE/BIA/UI4050/2014info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The fish family Muraenidae: an ideal group for testing at small-scale the coherency of Macaronesia as a biogeographic unit, with the first report on separate fishery statistics

    Get PDF
: The present study was conceptualized to study the muraenid species (moray eels) occurring around the volcanic archipelagos of the Azores, Madeira, Selvagens, Canary and Cabo Verde islands (eastern-central Atlantic). The biogeographic patterns of these species were analysed and compared. We then hypothesized that this fish family is an ideal group for testing at small-scale the coherency of Macaronesia and its direct biogeographic units: i.e. the Azores, Webbnesia and Cabo Verde, as proposed in recent scientific literature. Additionally, this paper provides for the first time separate fishery statistics for this group in the region that were analysed to contrast the biogeographic results.En prensa1,00

Reactivity of paraquat with sodium salicylate: formation of stable complexes

    Get PDF
Sodium salicylate (NaSAL) has been shown to be a promising antidote for the treatment of paraquat (PQ) poisonings. The modulation of the pro-oxidant and pro-inflammatory pathways, as well as the antithrombogenic properties of NaSAL are probably essential features for the healing effects provided by this drug. Nevertheless, a possible direct chemical reactivity between PQ and NaSAL is also a putative pathway to be considered, this hypothesis being the ground of the present study. In accordance, it is shown, for the first time that PQ and NaSAL react immediately in aqueous medium and within 2–3 min in the solid state. Photographs and scanning electron photomicrographs indicated that a new chemical entity is formed when both compounds are mixed. This assumption was corroborated by the evaluation of the melting point, and through several analytical techniques, namely ultraviolet/visible spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, gas chromatography/mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry (GC/MS/MS), liquid chromatography/electrospray ionization/mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry (LC/ESI/MS/MS) and infrared spectroscopy, which revealed that stable charge-transfer complexes are formed when PQ is mixed with NaSAL. LC/ESI/MS/MS allowed obtaining the stoichiometry of the charge-transfer complexes. In order to increase resolution, single value decomposition, acting as a filter, showed that the chargetransfer complexes withm/z 483, 643 and 803 correspond to the pseudo-molecular ions, respectively 1:2, 1:3 and 1:4 (PQ:NaSAL). In conclusion, these results provided a new and important mechanism of action of NaSAL against the toxicity mediated by PQ
