    The taxonomy of the semiterrestrial gecarcinucid crab Lepidothelphusa cognettii (Nobili, 1903) from Borneo is revised. The identity of L. cognettii s. str. is clarified and five new species: L. flavochela, L. limau, L. loi, L. padawan and L. sangon, are described from southwestern Sarawak, Malaysia. The species are characterised by their diagnostic live colours, structures of their carapaces, chelae, male abdomens and male first gonopods. They also occupy geographically discrete ranges, sometimes with different habitats

    A new species of cavernicolous gecarcinucid crab, Arachnothelphusa sarang, is described from a limestone cave in northern Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo. This increases the number of Arachnothelphusa species to six. It is the second member in the genus that is known to primarily occupy limestone caves, the other being A. rhadamanthysi Ng & Goh, 1987, from Gomantong in Sabah.     Evidence for glutamate as a neuroglial transmitter within sensory ganglia

    This study examines key elements of glutamatergic transmission within sensory ganglia of the rat. We show that the soma of primary sensory neurons release glutamate when depolarized. Using acute dissociated mixed neuronal/glia cultures of dorsal root ganglia (DRG) or trigeminal ganglia and a colorimetric assay, we show that when glutamate uptake by satellite glial cells (SGCs) is inhibited, KCl stimulation leads to simultaneous increase of glutamate in the culture medium. With calcium imaging we see that the soma of primary sensory neurons and SGCs respond to AMPA, NMDA, kainate and mGluR agonists, and selective antagonists block this response. Using whole cell patch-clamp technique, inward currents were recorded from small diameter (<30 µm) DRG neurons from intact DRGs (ex-vivo whole ganglion preparation) in response to local application of the above glutamate receptor agonists. Following a chronic constriction injury (CCI) of either the inferior orbital nerve or the sciatic nerve, glutamate expression increases in the trigeminal ganglia and DRG respectively. This increase occurs in neurons of all diameters and is present in the somata of neurons with injured axons as well as in somata of neighboring uninjured neurons. These data provides additional evidence that glutamate can be released within the sensory ganglion, and that the somata of primary sensory neurons as well as SGCs express functional glutamate receptors at their surface.     A new species of tree-hole gecarcinucid freshwater crab, Arachnothelphusa merarapensis, is described from a primary dipterocarp forest near Merarap Hot Spring Resort in Lawas, northern Sarawak, Malaysia. This brings the number of species in the genus Arachnothelphusa found in Borneo to five, and it is likely that more species will be discovered from this island. The new species has preference for living in water-filled tree-holes, which is the first record of a tree-hole crab for Southeast Asia. The habitat characteristics and distribution of this new species are also discussed

    A High-Eccentricity Low-Mass Companion to HD 89744

    HD 89744 is an F7 V star with mass 1.4 M, effective temperature 6166 K, age 2.0 Gy and metallicity [Fe/H]= 0.18. The radial velocity of the star has been monitored with the AFOE spectrograph at the Whipple Observatory since 1996, and evidence has been found for a low mass companion. The data were complemented by additional data from the Hamilton spectrograph at Lick Observatory during the companion's periastron passage in fall 1999. As a result, we have determined the star's orbital wobble to have period P = 256 d, orbital amplitude K = 257 m/s, and eccentricity e = 0.7. From the stellar mass we infer that the companion has minimum mass m2 sin i = 7.2 MJup in an orbit with semi-major axis a2 = 0.88 AU. The eccentricity of the orbit, among the highest known for extra-solar planets, continues the trend that extra-solar planets with semi-major axes greater than about 0.15 AU tend to have much higher eccentricities than are found in our solar system.     Kondo time scales for quantum dots - response to pulsed bias potentials

    The response of a quantum dot in the Kondo regime to rectangular pulsed bias potentials of various strengths and durations is studied theoretically. It is found that the rise time is faster than the fall time, and also faster than time scales normally associated with the Kondo problem. For larger values of the pulsed bias, one can induce dramatic oscillations in the induced current with a frequency approximating the splitting between the Kondo peaks that would be present in steady state.
