An understanding of the types of ototoxic medications at the root of the sensorineural hearing loss combined with an understanding of the advancements in treatments will help the rehabilitation professional better serve consumers who fit this description

    Habitat, Climate, and Raptors as Factors in the Northern Bobwhite Decline: A Multi-Scale Analysis

    Landscape-level processes such as habitat loss and fragmentation are primarily responsible for the declines in northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus). These landscape processes generally occur at a scale beyond that of traditional quail studies and may involve not only habitat loss and fragmentation but also broad-scale changes in climate trends and predation risk. However, reductions in usable space and changes in habitat configuration at smaller scales may also reduce population viability. It is therefore imperative to study relationships to bobwhite populations at multiple scales. The objective of our research is to quantify to what extent habitat loss and fragmentation, climate, and predators are affecting quail populations at multiple scales within Texas. Our study area will include the Rolling Plains and Rio Grande Plains ecoregions, which are historic strongholds of bobwhite, though each has seen recent declines. We will examine the relative contributions of 3 general factors (habitat, climate, and predators) on quail populations at multiple scales (ranch, route-level, and landscape). Specifically, these factors include total habitat amount, degree of fragmentation, raptor relative abundance, temperature, and precipitation. We will obtain data from multiple sources to determine quail trends (Breeding Bird Survey and ranch-level data) and relate habitat trends (National Land Cover Database and Texas Ecological Systems Classification Project), raptor abundance (Breeding Bird Survey), and climate factors (PRISM) within a multiple linear regression framework. This study will provide an understanding of 1) to what degree habitat loss and fragmentation are affecting quail populations on Texas rangelands, 2) how other factors such as climate and predators may be compounding these effects, and 3) how these relationships vary at multiple scales

    Pregnenolone and pregnenolone sulfate metabolism by human fetal testes in vitro

    Homogenates of testes from human fetuses of 12-16 weeks gestation were incubated in vitro with pregnenolone-4-14C and pregnenolone-7-3H-sulfate. Dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate and pregnenediol sulfate, each bearing the tritium label only, were identified in the conjugated fraction. Progesterone, 17[alpha]-hydroxyprogesterone, 17[alpha]-hydroxypregnenolone, dehydroepiandrosterone, androstenedione and testosterone, each bearing both a tritium and 14C-label, were identified in the organic fraction. In a similar incubation, with pregnenolone-7-3H-sulfate-35S as substrate, the direct conversion to 17[alpha]-hydroxypregnenolone sulfate was demonstrated. The presence of slight sulfatase activity was also noted. The direct metabolism of steroid sulfates and the presence of sulfatase activity in this fetal tissue and the possible significance of these findings in the developing male fetus are discussed.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/32735/1/0000104.pd

    A solid state device chip including diodes (generating a higher frequency output through frequency multiplication of the input frequency) and a novel on-chip power combining design. Together with the on-chip power combining, the chip has increased efficiency because the diodes' anodes, being micro-fabricated simultaneously on the same patch of a GaAs wafer under identical conditions, are very well balanced. The diodes' GaAs heterostructure and the overall chip geometry are designed to be optimized for high power operation. As a result of all these features, the device can generate record-setting power having a signal frequency in the F-band and W-band (30% conversion efficiency)

    High-resolution melt (HRM) analysis for detection of SNPs associated with pyrethroid resistance in the southern cattle fever tick, Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus (Acari: Ixodidae)

    The southern cattle fever tick, Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus, is the most economically important ectoparasite of cattle worldwide. A limitation for sustainable control and eradication is the emergence of acaricide resistance among tick populations. Molecular diagnostic tools offer the opportunity to detect resistance rapidly, which can be complemented with confirmatory bioassays with larvae and adult ticks that are more resource and time consuming to generate. Synthetic pyrethroid resistance is one of the most prevalent and well-studied forms of resistance in arthropods, being linked with target site alterations in the sodium ion channel gene. Here, we report research on a novel molecular method to detect mutations in the para-sodium channel gene of R. microplus associated with acaricide resistance that is based on quantitative PCR high-resolution melt (HRM) analysis. Genomic DNA fragments of domains II and III of the para-sodium channel gene were amplified by real-time PCR in the presence of EVA®Green dye to test resistant and susceptible reference ticks from the U.S., Brazil, and Mexico. Larval packet tests with discriminating doses and a modified lethal time analysis were performed to confirm resistance to permethrin, cypermethrin, deltamethrin, and flumethrin in laboratory strains. Tick specimens collected from cattle that were inspected at the United States Port-of-Entry at the Texas-Mexico border were also genotyped. Previously described mutations associated with pyrethroid resistance (T170C, C190A, G184C, and T2134A) were successfully detected by qPCR-HRM in different genotypes and confirmed by sequencing. A novel non-synonymous SNP located at domain III (C2136A) and the G215T mutation in domain II, previously described only in Asian R. microplus and R. australis, were also detected with the HRM and confirmed by sequencing. This technique could be adapted for high-throughput screening, detection, and discovery of allele-specific mutations in cattle tick outbreak populations to inform eradication strategies in the USA. This knowledge could also be applied to integrated control programs in other parts of the world where R. microplus is endemic and where similar SNPs have been identified associated with pyrethroid resistance.     Chronological Age-Grading of House Flies by Using Near-Infrared Spectroscopy

    The sensitivity and accuracy of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) was compared with that of the pteridine fluorescence technique for estimating the chronological age of house flies, Musca domestica (L.). Although results with both techniques were significantly correlated with fly age, confidence limits on predicted ages generally were smaller with NIRS. Young flies could be readily differentiated from old flies by using NIRS. Age predictions using the pteridine method are dependent upon size, sex, and temperature at which adult flies are exposed. In contrast, those factors do not need to be determined for age-grading using NIRS. Classification accuracy using the NIRS method was similar for whole flies, fresh heads, dried heads, and ethanol-preserved heads. The NIRS method was also suitable for predicting age of stable flies, Stomoxys calcitrans (L.), and face flies, Musca autumnalis De Geer. NIRS has several advantages over the measurement of pteridine levels for age-grading field-collected flies, including speed and portability of instrumentation, and not needing to determine sex, size, and temperatures to which adult flies were exposed

    Helicobacter pylori and cancer among adults in Uganda

    Data from Africa on infection with Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) are sparse. Therefore, as part of an epidemiological study of cancer in Uganda, we investigated the prevalence and determinants of antibodies against H. pylori among 854 people with different cancer types and benign tumours. Patients were recruited from hospitals in Kampala, Uganda, interviewed about various demographic and lifestyle factors and tested for antibodies against H. pylori. In all patients combined, excluding those with stomach cancer (which has been associated with H. pylori infection), the prevalence of antibodies was 87% (723/833) overall, but declined with increasing age (p = 0.02) and was lower among people who were HIV seropositive compared to seronegative (p <0.001). Otherwise, there were few consistent epidemiological associations. Among those with stomach cancer, 18/21 (86%) had anti-H. pylori antibodies (odds ratio 0.8, 95% confidence intervals 0.2–2.9, p = 0.7; estimated using all other patients as controls, with adjustment for age, sex and HIV serostatus). No other cancer site or type was significantly associated with anti-H. pylori antibodies. The prevalence of H. pylori reported here is broadly in accord with results from other developing countries, although the determinants of infection and its' role in the aetiology of gastric cancer in Uganda remain unclear

    Impacts of Invasive, Exotic Grasses on Quail of Southwestern Rangelands: A Decade of Progress?

    Exotic grass invasions are a serious concern for State and Federal agencies, non-government organizations, and private landowners engaged in quail conservation and management. Quail biologists recognized the potential negative impacts of exotic grass invasion on North American quail populations 2 decades ago. This issue was addressed in a review paper published in the Proceedings of the 5th National Quail Symposium in 2002. That paper reported the state of our knowledge on impacts of exotic grass invasions on 5 quail species inhabiting southwestern rangelands. Our objective is to update the progress of exotic grass-quail research on southwestern rangelands during the past decade by reviewing studies that provide specific results about the impacts of exotic grass invasions on southwestern quail populations. Results of studies that have quantified the impacts of exotic grass on quail habitat use are summarized and discussed along with studies that describe how exotic grasses impact important components of quail habitat such as diversity and abundance native herbaceous plants and arthropods. Management of exotic grasses is also discussed
