The Handbook to English as a Lingua Franca Practices for Inclusive Multilingual Classrooms
This handbook is an important companion for future users of the ENRICH CPD Course, including, but not limited to: (a) pre- or in-service English language teachers who may wish to engage with the CPD materials and activities at their own pace; (b) teacher educators who would like to employ the CPD materials and activities with their own trainees; (c ) researchers in the fields which ENRICH revolves around (e.g., English as a Lingua Franca, multilingualism, English language pedagogy) who may be interested in finding out whether, and how, information gathered through ENRICH could inform their research studies; and (d) members of educational policy- making organisations and institutions which may want to explore the relevance of ENRICH to their own professional endeavours. It is divided into five main chapters where the ENRICH project is firstly introduced, followed by an explanation of the needs analysis for the development of the CPD Course, a rationale for the target audience, a detailed description of each of the CPD Course sections, and a final reflection on the evaluation of the Course and lessons learnt.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Controversies in the management of primary sclerosing cholangitis
Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) remains a rare but significant disease, which affects mainly young males in association with inflammatory bowel disease. There have been few advances in the understanding of the pathogenesis of the condition and no therapeutics with proven mortality benefit aside from liver transplantation. There remain areas of controversy in the management of PSC which include the differentiation from other cholangiopathies, in particular immunoglobulin G4 related sclerosing cholangitis, the management of dominant biliary strictures, and the role of ursodeoxycholic acid. In addition, the timing of liver transplantation in PSC remains difficult to predict with standard liver severity scores. In this review, we address these controversies and highlight the latest evidence base in the management of PSC
The Effect of Transposable Element Insertions on Gene Expression Evolution in Rodents
Background:Many genomes contain a substantial number of transposable elements (TEs), a few of which are known to be involved in regulating gene expression. However, recent observations suggest that TEs may have played a very important role in the evolution of gene expression because many conserved non-genic sequences, some of which are know to be involved in gene regulation, resemble TEs. Results:Here we investigate whether new TE insertions affect gene expression profiles by testing whether gene expression divergence between mouse and rat is correlated to the numbers of new transposable elements inserted near genes. We show that expression divergence is significantly correlated to the number of new LTR and SINE elements, but not to the numbers of LINEs. We also show that expression divergence is not significantly correlated to the numbers of ancestral TEs in most cases, which suggests that the correlations between expression divergence and the numbers of new TEs are causal in nature. We quantify the effect and estimate that TE insertion has accounted for ~20% (95% confidence interval: 12% to 26%) of all expression profile divergence in rodents. Conclusions:We conclude that TE insertions may have had a major impact on the evolution of gene expression levels in rodents
Ovarian cancer in adolescence – a case report
Small cell carcinoma of the ovary, hypercalcemic type is a rare and aggressive tumor affecting young women.
The mechanism of development is unclear and there have been relatively few clinical studies reported in literature.
The authors present a clinical case of a 15-year-old girl with a small cell carcinoma of the ovar
Encefalite anti-NMDA e teratoma do ovário
Anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor encephalitis may be associated with ovarian teratoma and results in a characteristic syndrome that presents with psychiatric symptoms, rapid decline of the level of consciousness, central hypoventilation and seizures. Immunotherapy and resection of teratoma are effective therapies
Strained graphene structures: from valleytronics to pressure sensing
Due to its strong bonds graphene can stretch up to 25% of its original size
without breaking. Furthermore, mechanical deformations lead to the generation
of pseudo-magnetic fields (PMF) that can exceed 300 T. The generated PMF has
opposite direction for electrons originating from different valleys. We show
that valley-polarized currents can be generated by local straining of
multi-terminal graphene devices. The pseudo-magnetic field created by a
Gaussian-like deformation allows electrons from only one valley to transmit and
a current of electrons from a single valley is generated at the opposite side
of the locally strained region. Furthermore, applying a pressure difference
between the two sides of a graphene membrane causes it to bend/bulge resulting
in a resistance change. We find that the resistance changes linearly with
pressure for bubbles of small radius while the response becomes non-linear for
bubbles that stretch almost to the edges of the sample. This is explained as
due to the strong interference of propagating electronic modes inside the
bubble. Our calculations show that high gauge factors can be obtained in this
way which makes graphene a good candidate for pressure sensing.Comment: to appear in proceedings of the NATO Advanced Research Worksho
Um caso de variante folicular do carcinoma papilar da tiróide num teratoma quÃstico maduro numa mulher jovem
Malignant transformation of a teratoma occurs in 1-2% of cases, with carcinoma of the thyroid being extremely rare. It is usually diagnosed in the postoperative histopathological exam. We describe a case of thyroid carcinoma in a mature cystic teratoma
Esterilização tubária histeroscópica com Essure ® : um estudo observacional de 7 anos
Introduction: Hysteroscopic sterilization with the Essure® device is a method of contraception considered safe and
effective already applied in more than 200,000 women. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of this method of contraception and the adverse events associated with the placement of Essure®, including pain during the procedure and postprocedure complications.
Material and methods: We performed a retrospective observational study with inclusion of all the women submitted to
Essure® placement in a large urban hospital in Portugal, from January 2008 to December 2015 (7 years). The variables
age, parity, duration and intercurrences of the procedure, follow-up exams and final outcome were evaluated. The statistical analysis was performed with STATA 12.1.
Results: Of the 118 women only 100 finished the procedure with 16.9% reporting moderate or severe pain. Although less
than 3 intrauterine rings were found in 8.5% of cases, the success rate was 92%. The complications described were tubal
perforation (0.8%), pregnancy (1 case) and incorrect positioning of the implants (3%).
Discussion/Conclusion: The success rate of the procedure was very close to that described in the literature with a low incidence of complications. That advantages make it an idea method for women with high surgical risk and multiple co-morbiditiesinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
