    Best Practice in P.E. for gender equity-A review

    This review wants to provide a summary of selected literature from the past 10 years on gender equity in P.E. It aims at providing an overview of the current research, while suggesting viable solutions to encourage girls to take a more active role in sport and physical activity. To ensure the respect of gender identity in education, the quality of teaching is crucial. Therefore, we argue that there is greater need for research in the field of gender equity in PE. While much research focused on how gender reproduced though pedagogical practice in PE, this review aims at analyzing how to challenge it and identify good practices. The analysis of the didactic process pointed out five dimensions (design, methodological, reflexive, organizational, relational). For each dimension, the critical aspects for education to gender equity have been identified, together with the effective practice and strategy to promote gender equity and equal education in PE. Methods and techniques useful for PE teachers were highlighted to give teachers the right tools to orientate students to sports, limit early sport dropouts and valorise the practice of all sports equally, as disciplines for both men and women.     Temporal Isolation Among LTE/5G Network Functions by Real-time Scheduling

    Radio access networks for future LTE/5G scenarios need to be designed so as to satisfy increasingly stringent requirements in terms of overall capacity, individual user performance, flexibility and power efficiency. This is triggering a major shift in the Telcom industry from statically sized, physically provisioned network appliances towards the use of virtualized network functions that can be elastically deployed within a flexible private cloud of network operators. However, a major issue in delivering strong QoS levels is the one to keep in check the temporal interferences among co-located services, as they compete in accessing shared physical resources. In this paper, this problem is tackled by proposing a solution making use of a real-time scheduler with strong temporal isolation guarantees at the OS/kernel level. This allows for the development of a mathematical model linking major parameters of the system configuration and input traffic characterization with the achieved performance and response-time probabilistic distribution. The model is verified through extensive experiments made on Linux on a synthetic benchmark tuned according to data from a real LTE packet processing scenario

    Il genere e l’educazione fisica e le percezioni degli insegnanti: un’indagine esplorativa

    COVID-19 has accentuated new methodological and epistemological-ontological questions in Physical Educa-tion. It is not only a didactic problem but sits alongside other central important issues waiting to be resolved, such as gender discrimination. This contribution presents evidence, gathered from twenty-eight P.E. teachers, on the subject of gender and the awareness that derives from it. This evidence deals with the tendencies towards competitiveness and performance inherited from sport, historically a male domain. Physical Education, due to its educational role, must address the issue of gender, in order to outline original and up to date strategies. The gender-related data from the questionnaire demonstrate that for the didactic orientation criteria applicable to Physical Education to be determined, teacher training needs to be initiated in the reflective laboratory, allowing for the fact that professional experience gained in school or through university training does not explore these issues in depth.La pandemia accentua nell’educazione fisica, nuovi interrogativi sul piano metodologico ed epistemologico- on-tologico. Se la didattica deve rinunciare a contatti e vicinanze corporee, altri nodi centrali attendono di essere sciolti, come la discriminazione di genere. Il contributo presenta evidenze, emerse da ventotto insegnanti di educazione fisica, riferite al genere e alla consapevolezza che ne deriva. Tali evidenze devono fare i conti con orientamenti alla competitività e performance ereditati dallo sport, storicamente dominio maschile. L’educazione fisica, per il suo ruolo educativo, deve affrontare il problema del genere per delineare strategie proprie, originali, attuali. I dati del questionario, riguardo il genere, fanno emerge la necessità di attivare una formazione, degli/delle insegnanti, sul laboratorio riflessivo, da cui determinare criteri di orientamento didattico applicabili all’educazione fisica, anche in ragione della dimensione etica e politica dell’esperienza educativa o formativa universitaria

    Frightening Small Children and Disconcerting Grown-ups: Concurrency in the Linux Kernel

    International audienceConcurrency in the Linux kernel can be a contentious topic. The Linux kernel mailing list features numerous discussions related to consistency models, including those of the more than 30 CPU architectures supported by the kernel and that of the kernel itself. How are Linux programs supposed to behave? Do they behave correctly on exotic hardware? A formal model can help address such questions. Better yet, an executable model allows programmers to experiment with the model to develop their intuition. Thus we offer a model written in the cat language, making it not only formal, but also executable by the herd simulator. We tested our model against hardware and refined it in consultation with maintainers. Finally, we formalised the fundamental law of the Read-Copy-Update synchronisation mechanism, and proved that one of its implementations satisfies this law

    Real-time Hybrid Locomotion Mode Recognition for Lower-limb Wearable Robots

    Real-time recognition of locomotion-related activities is a fundamental skill that the controller of lower-limb wearable robots should possess. Subject-specific training and reliance on electromyographic interfaces are the main limitations of existing approaches. This study presents a novel methodology for real-time locomotion mode recognition of locomotion-related activities in lower-limb wearable robotics. A hybrid classifier can distinguish among seven locomotion-related activities. First, a time-based approach classifies between static and dynamical states based on gait kinematics data. Second, an event-based fuzzy logic method triggered by foot pressure sensors operates in a subject-independent fashion on a minimal set of relevant biomechanical features to classify among dynamical modes. The locomotion mode recognition algorithm is implemented on the controller of a portable powered orthosis for hip assistance. An experimental protocol is designed to evaluate the controller performance in an out-of-lab scenario without the need for a subject-specific training. Experiments are conducted on six healthy volunteers performing locomotion-related activities at slow, normal, and fast speeds under the zero-torque and assistive mode of the orthosis. The overall accuracy rate of the controller is 99.4% over more than 10,000 steps, including seamless transitions between different modes. The experimental results show a successful subject-independent performance of the controller for wearable robots assisting locomotion-related activities

    Prevalence of osteoporosis in the Italian population and main risk factors: results of BoneTour Campaign.

    BACKGROUND: BoneTour is a campaign conducted throughout the Italian territory for the assessment of Italian people bone status and for the prevention of osteoporosis. METHODS: A total of 7305 sequential subjects of both sexes were screened, collecting clinical data through the FRAX™ questionnaire, and measuring heel bone stiffness by Quantitative Ultrasonography (QUS). The 10-year risk for hip and major osteoporotic fractures was calculated taking into account personal or family history of fragility fracture, smoking, alcohol abuse, rheumatoid arthritis, prolonged steroids assumption. Additional risk factors were evaluated, including early menopause, poor sunlight exposure, low dietary calcium intake, physical inactivity, number of pregnancies, months of lactation, tobacco cigarettes smoked per year, specific causes of secondary osteoporosis. Through a correlation study, the influence of each factor on the development of osteoporosis was analyzed. RESULTS: As many as 18 % of women suffer from osteoporosis, as defined by QUS T-score. The calculation of FRAX™ confirmed the weight of the already known risk factors. The correlation study revealed the significance of some additional factors, such as hyperthyroidism, nephrolithiasis, Crohn disease, ulcerative colitis, celiac disease, poor sun exposure, and oophorectomy before age 50. CONCLUSIONS: The high prevalence of secondary osteoporosis in the Italian population clearly indicates the importance of additional risk factors not yet included in the FRAX™ algorithm, for which preventive measures should be considered. Screening campaigns may allow both early diagnosis and access to treatment

    MRI/US fusion prostate biopsy: Our initial experience

    Aim: The objective of this study is to present our initial experience with magnetic resonance imaging/ultrasound (MRI/US) fusion biopsy using the Koelis Trinity device after the first consecutive 59 patients. Materials and methods: 59 consecutive patients with suspected prostate cancer (PCA) underwent prostate biopsy using Trinity Koelis® (Koelis, Grenoble, France). We divided the patients into 2 groups: patients with a previous negative mapping underwent to a MRI/US fusion re-biopsy (Group A); and biopsy-naïve patients who underwent to a first stereotactic 3-D mapping of the prostate (Group B). Group A (22 patients):mean age 64 years (CI 48-73), mean PSA = 7.7 ng/ml (CI 4.2- 9.9); mean prostate volume 55 ml(CI 45-82), Digital Rectal Examination (DRE) positive in 2/22, number of lesions detected by MRI 1.4, mean cores from each MRI target lesion 3 (CI 2-5), mean total cores 15 ( CI 12-19). Group B (37 patients): mean age 66 years (CI 49-77), mean PSA= 4.7 (3.2- 7.9); mean prostate volume 45 ml (33-67), DRE positive in 5/37, mean total cores 14 ( CI 10-16) Results: In Group A 10/22 patients were positive for PCA (overall detection rate of 45.5%): 6 PCA were detected by target biopsy and 4 cancer by random biopsy. Significant prostate cancer (defined as the presence of Gleason pattern 4) was detected in 4/10 patients (Significant PCA detection rate of 40%) and all significant PCA were detected by MRI target biopsy. All PCA detected by random biopsy had Gleason score 3 + 3 = 6. In Group B (biopsy naïve patients) 14/37 patients were positive for PCA (overall detection rate of 37.8%), Significant prostate cancer was detected in 5/14 patients (Significant PCA detection rate of 35,7%). No significant side effects were recorded. Conclusions: Our overall detection rate was 45.5% and 37.8% in Group A (patients with previous negative biopsy and persistent suspicion of PCA) and in Group B (biopsy naïve patients) respectively; clinical significant PCA detection rate was respectively 40% and 35.7%. These results are similar to current literature and promising for the future. We believe that using platforms of co-registered MRI/US fusion biopsy can potentially improve risk stratification and reduces understaging, undergrading and the need for repeat biopsies in biopsy naïve patients (using a stereotactic first mapping) and in patients with previous negative biopsy and persistent suspicion of PCA ( using a second MRI/US fusion biopsy)

    Initial evaluation of the "Trauma surgery course"

    BACKGROUND: The consequence of the low rate of penetrating injuries in Europe and the increase in non-operative management of blunt trauma is a decrease in surgeons' confidence in managing traumatic injuries has led to the need for new didactic tools. The aim of this retrospective study was to present the Corso di Chirurgia del Politrauma (Trauma Surgery Course), developed as a model for teaching operative trauma techniques, and assess its efficacy. METHOD: the two-day course consisted of theoretical lectures and practical experience on large-sized swine. Data of the first 126 participants were collected and analyzed. RESULTS: All of the 126 general surgeons who had participated in the course judged it to be an efficient model to improve knowledge about the surgical treatment of trauma. CONCLUSION: A two-day course, focusing on trauma surgery, with lectures and life-like operation situations, represents a model for simulated training and can be useful to improve surgeons' confidence in managing trauma patients. Cooperation between organizers of similar initiatives would be beneficial and could lead to standardizing and improving such courses

    Glucose Metabolic Reprogramming of ER Breast Cancer in Acquired Resistance to the CDK4/6 Inhibitor Palbociclib

    The majority of breast cancers express the estrogen receptor (ER) and are dependent on estrogen for their growth and survival. Endocrine therapy (ET) is the standard of care for these tumors. However, a superior outcome is achieved in a subset of ER positive (ER+)/human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 negative (HER2−) metastatic breast cancer patients when ET is administrated in combination with a cyclin-dependent kinases 4 and 6 (CDK4/6) inhibitor, such as palbociclib. Moreover, CDK4/6 inhibitors are currently being tested in ER+/HER2+ breast cancer and reported encouraging results. Despite the clinical advances of a combinatorial therapy using ET plus CDK4/6 inhibitors, potential limitations (i.e., resistance) could emerge and the metabolic adaptations underlying such resistance warrant further elucidation. Here we investigate the glucose-dependent catabolism in a series of isogenic ER+ breast cancer cell lines sensitive to palbociclib and in their derivatives with acquired resistance to the drug. Importantly, ER+/HER2− and ER+/HER2+ cell lines show a different degree of glucose dependency. While ER+/HER2− breast cancer cells are characterized by enhanced aerobic glycolysis at the time of palbociclib sensitivity, ER+/HER2+ cells enhance their glycolytic catabolism at resistance. This metabolic phenotype was shown to have prognostic value and was targeted with multiple approaches offering a series of potential scenarios that could be of clinical relevance
