Compression properties of polymeric syntactic foam composites under cyclic loading
Syntactic foams are composite materials frequently used in applications
requiring the properties of low density and high damage tolerance. In the
present work, polymer-based syntactic foams were studied under cyclic
compression in order to investigate their compressibility, recoverability,
energy dissipation and damage tolerance. These syntactic foams were
manufactured by adding hollow polymer microspheres of various sizes and wall
thicknesses into a polyurethane matrix. The associated loading and unloading
curves during cyclic testing were recorded, revealing the viscoelastic nature
of the materials. SEM images of the samples were obtained in order to study
potential damage mechanisms during compression. It was observed that these
syntactic foams exhibit high elastic recovery and energy dissipation over a
wide range of compressional strains and the addition of polymer microspheres
mitigate the damage under compressional loading.Comment: 25 pages, 13 figure
Geochemistry and metallogeny of Neoproterozoic pyrite in oxic and anoxic sediments
The Neoproterozoic Dalradian Supergroup contains widespread diagenetic sulphides present as pyrite. The sulphides occur in both carbonaceous shales and glacial diamictites, that were deposited in relatively reducing and oxidising conditions respectively. The trace element compositions of the pyrite, and consequently the whole rock compositions, contrast between the two lithologies. The highest concentrations of selenium, tellurium and gold are all found in diamictite-hosted pyrite. The data suggest that increased mobility of these elements in oxidising conditions led to greater uptake when pyrite was precipitated. As one model for the formation of orogenic gold ore deposits assumes a sulphide-rich protolith, pyrite ultimately formed during relatively oxidising conditions could make a contribution, including the widespread pyrite precipitated during the Neoproterozoic ‘Snowball Earth’ glaciations
A black shale protolith for gold-tellurium mineralisation in the Dalradian Supergroup (Neoproterozoic) of Britain and Ireland
The Dalradian Supergroup of Britain and Ireland is mineralised by gold-tellurium vein deposits. The host succession includes carbonaceous, pyritic shales (pelites) which were a source of trace elements, including gold and tellurium. LA-ICP-MS mapping of pyrite crystals shows that late stages are enriched in gold, tellurium and lead, representing concentration of these elements during metamorphism and related hydrothermal activity. The sulphur isotope composition of the pyrite varies with stratigraphic position, reflecting an origin for the pyrite in the depositional environment through microbial sulphate reduction. Where pyrite was converted to pyrrhotite, trace element contents are much lower, indicating element liberation during metamorphism. These observations are consistent with a model of black shale protoliths for orogenic gold deposits

Improving Patient Flow in America’s Safety Net Hospitals: An Ethical Obligation to the Nation’s Underserved Populations
Academic medical centers frequently serve as safety net hospitals, treating a large percentage of low income and uninsured patients. Emergency departments (ED) provide unscheduled care for these patients whose conditions range from non-urgent annoyances to life-threatening injuries. Most research has shown that only a fraction of these visits are truly emergencies. These visits contribute to ED overcrowding, often leading to delayed or denied admissions. A common misconception is that ED overcrowding is an ED problem. Rather, competing patient flows from ED and inpatient areas frequently converge to produce system-wide demand surges. During times of acute overcrowding, delays can frequently be attributed to lack of inpatient beds and resources, both of which are beyond the ED’s control. Multi-disciplinary collaboration and system-wide cooperation is critical for successful patient flow management. This article presents evidence that improving patient flow enhances access to care for underserved populations, leads to better patient outcomes, and improves revenue for the organization
Reaching older people with PA delivered in football clubs: the reach, adoption and implementation characteristics of the Extra Time Programme.
Background Older adults (OA) represent a core priority group for physical activity and Public Health policy. As a result, significant interest is placed on how to optimise adherence to interventions promoting these approaches. Extra Time (ET) is an example of a national programme of physical activity interventions delivered in professional football clubs for OA aged 55+ years. This paper aims to examine the outcomes from ET, and unpick the processes by which these outcomes were achieved. Methods This paper represents a secondary analysis of data collected during the evaluation of ET. From the 985 OA reached by ET, n=486 adopted the programme and completed post-intervention surveys (typically 12 weeks). We also draw on interview data with 18 ET participants, and 7 staff who delivered the programme. Data were subject to thematic analysis to generate overarching and sub themes. Results Of the 486 participants, the majority 95%, (n= 462) were White British and 59.7% (n=290) were female. Most adopters (65.4%/n=318) had not participated in previous interventions in the host clubs. Social interaction was the most frequently reported benefit of participation (77.2%, n=375). While the reach of the club badge was important in letting people know about the programme, further work enhanced adoption and satisfaction. These factors included (i) listening to participants, (ii) delivering a flexible age-appropriate programme of diverse physical and social activities, (iii) offering activities which satisfy energy drives and needs for learning and (iv) extensive opportunities for social engagement. Conclusions Findings emerging from this study indicate that physical activity and health interventions delivered through professional football clubs can be effective for engaging OA

Ways Elementary Administrators Support Literacy Education
The work of an effective school principal is reflected in a variety of ways throughout the school. One area in which the principal\u27s influence is most clearly evident is literacy instruction. Studies conducted over the years provide support for this idea. In an investigation of the role of the school principal in reading instruction, Cox (1978) concluded that the leadership of the principal is vitally important in the development of an effective reading program. Chance (1991) also recognized the importance of principals as instructional leaders as she investigated principals\u27 own views of their involvement in the school reading program. In a summary statement, she maintained that the principal\u27s well planned, competent involvement in the instructional program is essential for program improvement at any level (p. 33)
A five year outbreak of methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus phage type 53,85 in a regional neonatal unit
We identified a 5-year outbreak of a methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) strain, affecting 202 babies on a neonatal unit, by routine weekly phage typing all S. aureus isolates. Multiple staged control measures including strict emphasis on hand hygiene, environmental and staff surveillance sampling, and application of topical hexachlorophane powder failed to end the outbreak. S. aureus PT 53,85 (SA5385) was found on opened packs of Stomahesive®, used as a neonatal skin protectant.
Only following the implementation of aseptic handling of Stomahesive®, and the use of topical mupirocin for staff nasal carriers of SA5385, and for babies colonized or infected with S. aureus, did the isolation rate of SA5385 decline. DNA fingerprinting indicated that [gt-or-equal, slanted]95% of SA5385 isolates were clonal. In vitro death rates of SA5385 on Stomahesive® with human serum were significantly lower than on Stomahesive® alone (P = 0·04), and on cotton sheet with serum (P = 0·04), highlighting the potential of this material as a survival niche. Phage typing remains a valuable, inexpensive and simple method for monitoring nosocomial MSSA infection
