    An Experience Report on the Effectiveness of Five Themed Workshops at Inspiring High School Students to Learn Coding

    Today there is a high demand for computing programmers, and at the same time a shortage of skilled professionals. This has triggered the creation of many initiatives in the past few years, with the aim of reversing the phenomenon. To achieve this, such events are designed to promote a more appealing image for programming, both as a profession and as a skill. This paper describes one such initiative, which uses a unique blend of differently themed, parallel workshops to motivate high school students to learn programming. With the use of questionnaires, we survey the participants and present our findings concerning the effectiveness of these workshops to engage the participants, to promote the value of coding, and to encourage the participants to consider a career in the field. We evaluate our results both at a general level, as well as by comparison among five individually themed workshops

    Is a heterozygous missense variant in SGSH the cause of a syndromic form of congenital amastia in an Original Braunvieh calf?

    A 5-days-old female purebred Original Braunvieh female calf was referred owing to a congenital absence of teats and cleft palate. Gross pathology revealed the entire absence of the udder including teats, complete palatoschisis affecting both soft and hard palate, hepatomegaly, corneal opacity and an open vulva (Figure S1). Whole genome sequencing (WGS) was performed using genomic DNA obtained from ear tissue from the calf. Reads were mapped to the ARS-UCD1.2 assembly (Rosen et al., 2020), resulting in an average read depth of 14.7×. The WGS data were evaluated as previously described (Jacinto et al., 2021). Variant filtering did not reveal any private homozygous protein-changing variants present in the genome of the affected calf, making a possible recessive inheritance unlikely. Assuming that a spontaneous mutation affecting a protein-coding gene is the cause, filtering for private heterozygous coding variants present in the calf’s genome allowed the identification of six variants with a predicted moderate or high impact (Table S1). These variants were confirmed as true by visual inspection with the integrative genomes viewer software (Robinson et al., 2017). These variants were absent from a total of 5365 controls and a single variant affects SGSH, a putative candidate gene for the observed congenital anomaly. This heterozygous variant at chr19:52427490C>T represents a missense variant in SGSH exon 4 (NM_001102189.2: c.425C>T) (Figure S2). We suspected that the identified variant in SGSH either occurred post-zygotically in the developing embryo or was inherited from a mosaic parent. Unfortunately, no biological samples were available from the parents. The encoded amino acid of SGSH is predicted to be altered at codon 142 (NP_001095659.2: p.Thr142Met) located in the N-sulphoglucosamine sulphohydrolase domain. The substitution of threonine to methionine affects an amino acid that is highly conserved in all species (Figure S2) and has been predicted to be harmful using three different tools (Provean, −4.729; PhD-SNP, 50%; SIFT, 79%)

    This paper draws from critical data studies and related fields to investigate police officer-involved homicide data for Los Angeles County. We frame police officer-involved homicide data as a rhetorical tool that can reify certain assumptions about the world and extend regimes of power. We highlight the possibility that this type of sensitive civic data can be investigated and employed within local communities through creative practice. Community involvement with data can create a countervailing force to powerful dominant narratives and supplement activist projects that hold local officials accountable for their actions. Our analysis examines four Los Angeles County police officer-involved homicide data sets. First, we provide accounts of the semantics, granularity, scale and transparency of this local data. Then, we describe a “counter data action,” an event that invited members of the community to identify the limits and challenges present in police officer-involved homicide data and to propose new methods for deriving meaning from these indicators and statistics

    Antarctic Marine Bacteria as a Source of Anti-Biofilm Molecules to Combat ESKAPE Pathogens

    : The ESKAPE pathogens, including bacteria such as Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Enterobacter species, pose a global health threat due to their ability to resist antimicrobial drugs and evade the immune system. These pathogens are responsible for hospital-acquired infections, especially in intensive care units, and contribute to the growing problem of multi-drug resistance. In this study, researchers focused on exploring the potential of Antarctic marine bacteria as a source of anti-biofilm molecules to combat ESKAPE pathogens. Four Antarctic bacterial strains were selected, and their cell-free supernatants were tested against 60 clinical ESKAPE isolates. The results showed that the supernatants did not exhibit antimicrobial activity but effectively prevented biofilm formation and dispersed mature biofilms. This research highlights the promising potential of Antarctic bacteria in producing compounds that can counteract biofilms formed by clinically significant bacterial species. These findings contribute to the development of new strategies for preventing and controlling infections caused by ESKAPE pathogens

    11 p.Introducción: Entre los síntomas más frecuentes que aparecen en pacientes con síndrome de post-COVID persistente destaca la presencia de dolor musculoesquelético, pero actualmente existe una falta de evidencia sobre el impacto de la presencia de este síntoma sobre otras variables cognitivas, afectivas, funcionales y de discapacidad. En base a ello, el objetivo principal del proyecto es comparar la capacidad funcional y el grado de discapacidad entre pacientes con síndrome post-COVID-19 persistente que sufren dolor y pacientes con dicho síndrome que no sufren dolor. Métodos: Se llevará a cabo un estudio descriptivo transversal. Los pacientes serán reclutados y evaluados en el Centro XXXXX de Valladolid, España. Se recogerán datos mediante cuestionarios autoadministrados para determinadas variables de carácter cognitivo o afectivo y se realizarán pruebas de carácter físico/funcional como la prueba del escalón para evaluar la resistencia cardiorrespiratoria o la dinamometría para evaluar la fuerza muscular, entre otras. Para analizar los datos, se empleará la prueba estadística t de student para estudiar la comparación entre las variables continuas. Las relaciones entre las variables de las dimensiones capacidad física, sensorial, cognitiva y afectiva-motivacional, se examinarán mediante el coeficiente de correlación de Pearson. Ética y difusión: El estudio se realizará atendiendo a la legislación nacional para la protección de datos de los voluntarios según la LOPD y la declaración de Helsinki.     Our project explores un- and under-reported incidents of law enforcement-involved homicides, both justified and unjustified, through an analysis of extant federal and local databases with information pertaining to police officer-involved homicides, combined with mining and analysis of social media data and participatory action research methods to fill gaps in existing government and local databases. The social media information can be used in concert with other publicly available government databases to create a clearer picture of the lived realities of communities encountering police homicides in the United States. We have chosen Los Angeles County as the first community to study.ye

    Ultrasound in managing extrapulmonary tuberculosis: a randomized controlled two-center study

    Patients with clinically suspected tuberculosis are often treated empirically, as diagnosis - especially of extrapulmonary tuberculosis - remains challenging. This leads to an overtreatment of tuberculosis and to underdiagnosis of possible differential diagnoses.; This open-label, parallel-group, superiority randomized controlled trial is done in a rural and an urban center in Tanzania. HIV-positive and -negative adults (≥18 years) with clinically suspected extrapulmonary tuberculosis are randomized in a 1:1 ratio to an intervention- or control group, stratified by center and HIV status. The intervention consists of a management algorithm including extended focused assessment of sonography for HIV and tuberculosis (eFASH) in combination with chest X-ray and microbiological tests. Treatment with anti-tuberculosis drugs is started, if eFASH is positive, chest X-ray suggests tuberculosis, or a microbiological result is positive for tuberculosis. Patients in the control group are managed according national guidelines. Treatment is started if microbiology is positive or empirically according to the treating physician. The primary outcome is the proportion of correctly managed patients at 6 months (i.e patients who were treated with anti-tuberculosis treatment and had definite or probable tuberculosis, and patients who were not treated with anti-tuberculosis treatment and did not have tuberculosis). Secondary outcomes are the proportion of symptom-free patients at two and 6 months, and time to death. The sample size is 650 patients.; This study will determine, whether ultrasound in combination with other tests can increase the proportion of correctly managed patients with clinically suspected extrapulmonary tuberculosis, thus reducing overtreatment with anti-tuberculosis drugs.; PACTR, Registration number: PACTR201712002829221, registered December 1st 2017
