La paideia plutarchea nelle Epistole di Guarino Guarini

    Get PDF
At the court of Ferrara, the relationship between Prince Lionello d'Este and Guarino gave an impulse to a vivid interest in Greek and Latin culture. In particular, Guarino's attention, expressed in various epistles, is directed towards the study of history, since reading the deeds of the ancients, rescued from oblivion, shows the way to learn virtue and to escape wickedness. For this reason, Plutarch's Lives fulfil this cultural need well, since in them there were many examples of virtuous characters from the past, who had served the state loyally and honestly, and served as models to be imitated. History is therefore magistra vitae, because it is through it and for it that we know the events experienced in peace and war. From such examples of the past, Lionello will be able to benefit greatly, learning, for example, to recognise flatterers

Mourning in Sparta (Plu., Lyc. 27.1-4)

    Get PDF
With relation to the requirements established by the Spartan Lycurgus on funeral rites, the plutarchean biography mentions two exceptions (one man and one woman) from the rule requiring anonymous burials. The manuscripts' paradosis has been suspected and corrected from the 16th century onwards: in the last two centuries the conjecture Î»Î”Ï‡ÎżáżŠÏ‚, proposed by Latte and printed by Ziegler in the text of his Teubner edition, has been generally accepted. In this paper the reasons in support of this conjecture are rediscussed, and the possibility of retaining the manuscripts' text is advanced on the basis of the Lacedaemonian traditions attested by the sources

Pater kai poietes. Plutarch's Theology in the Ludovicus Nogarola's Translation and Interpretation

    Get PDF
This paper examines the translation and the commentary of Plutarch's Quaestiones Platonicae which Ludovico Nogarola dedicated in 1550 to Pope Julius III. The modus vertendi of the humanist (compared with that of Xylander and Cruserius) and his critical ability in commenting on difficult passages are taken into consideration. Attention is particularly focused on the second Quaestio, which concerns the definition of the supreme god as father and maker of all things
