Gender Differences in Smoking Among an Urban Emergency Department Sample.
BackgroundUrban emergency department (ED) patients have elevated smoking and substance use compared with the general population. We analyzed gender differences in smoking among an urban ED sample and assessed the contribution of substance use, demographic, and couple factors.MethodsWe conducted a secondary analysis of data obtained from a cross-sectional, observational survey (N = 1037 participants) on drinking, drug use, and intimate partner violence (IPV). Gender-specific logistic regression models for current (past 30-day) smoking and multinomial regression models for smoking intensity (light: â©˝5 cigarettes per day [CPD]; moderate: 6 to 10 CPD; heavier: >10 CPD) were estimated.ResultsSmoking prevalence was higher among men than women (35.5% vs 18.9%; P < .001). Substance use (frequency of intoxication, marijuana, amphetamine, and cocaine use), demographic (food insufficiency, unemployment), and couple-related factors (having a spouse/partner who smoked, IPV involvement, being in a same-gender couple) were differentially associated with current smoking and level of intensity among men and women.ConclusionsEmergency department staff should consider the impact of polysubstance use, food insufficiency, unemployment, and whether both partners in the couple smoke when screening patients for smoking and formulating cessation treatment plans. Women in same-gender relationships and those who have experienced IPV involvement may require additional referral
Weekend hospitalization and additional risk of death: An analysis of inpatient data
Objective To assess whether weekend admissions to hospital and/or already being an inpatient on weekend days were associated with any additional mortality risk.Design Retrospective observational survivorship study. We analysed all admissions to the English National Health Service (NHS) during the financial year 2009/10, following up all patients for 30 days after admission and accounting for risk of death associated with diagnosis, co-morbidities, admission history, age, sex, ethnicity, deprivation, seasonality, day of admission and hospital trust, including day of death as a time dependent covariate. The principal analysis was based on time to in-hospital death.Participants National Health Service Hospitals in England.Main Outcome Measures 30 day mortality (in or out of hospital). Results There were 14,217,640 admissions included in the principal analysis, with 187,337 in-hospital deaths reported within 30 days of admission. Admission on weekend days was associated with a considerable increase in risk of subsequent death compared with admission on weekdays, hazard ratio for Sunday versus Wednesday 1.16 (95% CI 1.14 to 1.18; P < .0001), and for Saturday versus Wednesday 1.11 (95% CI 1.09 to 1.13; P < .0001). Hospital stays on weekend days were associated with a lower risk of death than midweek days, hazard ratio for being in hospital on Sunday versus Wednesday 0.92 (95% CI 0.91 to 0.94; P < .0001), and for Saturday versus Wednesday 0.95 (95% CI 0.93 to 0.96; P < .0001). Similar findings were observed on a smaller US data set. Conclusions Admission at the weekend is associated with increased risk of subsequent death within 30 days of admission. The likelihood of death actually occurring is less on a weekend day than on a mid-week day
Evaluation and Utilization of a Tall Fescue Germplasm Collection at Pergamino INTA, Argentina
One hundred and fifty four accessions of tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) representing different types grown around the world were evaluated at Pergamino Inta Experimental Station. A multivariate analysis was carried out to evaluate individual and group variations. Three principal components (PCs) explained 70 % of the variation. Cluster analysis (Ward method) allowed the identification of 7 groups of populations. Plants from the most promising populations were selected in order to form a new breeding gene pool. The main objective of this study is to develop a new cultivar with improved winter herbage yield. Selected genotypes were mostly of Mediterranean origin
Flowering Distribution Pattern in White Clover Cultivars
A trial was carried out at Pergamino Agricultural Experimental Station to examine the distribution pattern and the profuseness of inflorescence production of white clover (Trifolium repens L.). The treatments were 16 cultivars (Churrinche, El Lucero MAG, Bayucuá, Estanzuela Zapicán, Lucero Plus Inta, Haifa, California, Ladino Gigante Lodigiano, Dubrava, Susi, Merwi, Blanca, Sonja, Espanso, Nora, S 184) of different origins and leaf size. The experimental design was a lattice with four replications. Southamerican cultivars showed a similar distribution pattern and had the highest inflorescence production. They also flowered earlier than foreign cultivars, except Haifa. Some of the cultivars evaluated did not have an acceptable inflorescence production. Some others produced seeds at the end of the season under bad weather conditions. Small-leaved varieties tended to have less inflorescence density. The spread of flowering during the reproductive cycle and the number of inflorescence per unit area are important characters that must be considered during breeding and before releasing introduced cultivars to the market
Development of large radii half-wave plates for CMB satellite missions
The successful European Space Agency (ESA) Planck mission has mapped the
Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) temperature anisotropy with unprecedented
accuracy. However, Planck was not designed to detect the polarised components
of the CMB with comparable precision. The BICEP2 collaboration has recently
reported the first detection of the B-mode polarisation. ESA is funding the
development of critical enabling technologies associated with B-mode
polarisation detection, one of these being large diameter half-wave plates. We
compare different polarisation modulators and discuss their respective
trade-offs in terms of manufacturing, RF performance and thermo-mechanical
properties. We then select the most appropriate solution for future satellite
missions, optimized for the detection of B-modes.Comment: 16 page
Non-thermalization in trapped atomic ion spin chains
Linear arrays of trapped and laser cooled atomic ions are a versatile
platform for studying emergent phenomena in strongly-interacting many-body
systems. Effective spins are encoded in long-lived electronic levels of each
ion and made to interact through laser mediated optical dipole forces. The
advantages of experiments with cold trapped ions, including high spatiotemporal
resolution, decoupling from the external environment, and control over the
system Hamiltonian, are used to measure quantum effects not always accessible
in natural condensed matter samples. In this review we highlight recent work
using trapped ions to explore a variety of non-ergodic phenomena in long-range
interacting spin-models which are heralded by memory of out-of-equilibrium
initial conditions. We observe long-lived memory in static magnetizations for
quenched many-body localization and prethermalization, while memory is
preserved in the periodic oscillations of a driven discrete time crystal state.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, submitted for edition of Phil. Trans. R. Soc. A

Stability theory of TASE-Runge-Kutta methods with inexact Jacobian
This paper analyzes the stability of the class of Time-Accurate and
Highly-Stable Explicit Runge-Kutta (TASE-RK) methods, introduced in 2021 by
Bassenne et al. (J. Comput. Phys.) for the numerical solution of stiff Initial
Value Problems (IVPs). Such numerical methods are easy to implement and require
the solution of a limited number of linear systems per step, whose coefficient
matrices involve the exact Jacobian of the problem. To significantly reduce
the computational cost of TASE-RK methods without altering their consistency
properties, it is possible to replace with a matrix (not necessarily
tied to ) in their formulation, for instance fixed for a certain number of
consecutive steps or even constant. However, the stability properties of
TASE-RK methods strongly depend on this choice, and so far have been studied
assuming .
In this manuscript, we theoretically investigate the conditional and
unconditional stability of TASE-RK methods by considering arbitrary . To
this end, we first split the Jacobian as . Then, through the use of
stability diagrams and their connections with the field of values, we analyze
both the case in which and are simultaneously diagonalizable and not.
Numerical experiments, conducted on Partial Differential Equations (PDEs)
arising from applications, show the correctness and utility of the theoretical
results derived in the paper, as well as the good stability and efficiency of
TASE-RK methods when is suitably chosen.Comment: 26 page
transsphenoidal surgery for secreting pituitary microadenomas: results with intraoperative application of absolute alcohol
ABSTRACT
Background: Pituitary adenomas represent a quite frequent neurosurgical disease. Secreting pituitary adenomas are represented by PRL, GH, ACTH and TSH tumours; the rate of postoperative hormonal recurrence is not ineligible. Methods: We present 106 patients affected by secreting pituitary microadenomas operated through transsphenoidal approach from 1998 through to 2008; in 54 (group 1) patients, intraoperative absolute alcohol was applied, while in the other 52 (group 2) it was not employed. The indications and the intraoperative technique of absolute alcohol application are presented. Hormonal recurrence was treated by hypofractionated stereotactic radiotherapy and/or medical therapy. Results: Postoperative hormonal and clinical remission was achieved in 50 and 47 patients respectively of group one and group two. At the first follow-up control, after 3 months from surgery, no patient of both groups presented hormonal/clinical recurrence. Six months after surgery, no patient of group one presented hormonal recurrence, while two patients of group 2 presented hormonal recurrence. After 2 years from surgery, two patients of group 1 and 4 patients of group 2 presented hormonal recurrence. Three years after operation, hormonal hypersecretion recurred in three patients of group one and in six patients of group 2. At 5 years follow-up, six patients of group one and 8 of group two presented hormonal recurrence. Conclusions: Intraoperative application of absolute alcohol, in selected cases, resulted useful to achieve better results in secreting pituitary microadenomas concerning both postoperative hormonal recurrence and hormonal persistence
Sawja: Static Analysis Workshop for Java
Static analysis is a powerful technique for automatic verification of
programs but raises major engineering challenges when developing a full-fledged
analyzer for a realistic language such as Java. This paper describes the Sawja
library: a static analysis framework fully compliant with Java 6 which provides
OCaml modules for efficiently manipulating Java bytecode programs. We present
the main features of the library, including (i) efficient functional
data-structures for representing program with implicit sharing and lazy
parsing, (ii) an intermediate stack-less representation, and (iii) fast
computation and manipulation of complete programs
