    Exchanging uncertainty: interoperable geostatistics?

    Traditionally, geostatistical algorithms are contained within specialist GIS and spatial statistics software. Such packages are often expensive, with relatively complex user interfaces and steep learning curves, and cannot be easily integrated into more complex process chains. In contrast, Service Oriented Architectures (SOAs) promote interoperability and loose coupling within distributed systems, typically using XML (eXtensible Markup Language) and Web services. Web services provide a mechanism for a user to discover and consume a particular process, often as part of a larger process chain, with minimal knowledge of how it works. Wrapping current geostatistical algorithms with a Web service layer would thus increase their accessibility, but raises several complex issues. This paper discusses a solution to providing interoperable, automatic geostatistical processing through the use of Web services, developed in the INTAMAP project (INTeroperability and Automated MAPping). The project builds upon Open Geospatial Consortium standards for describing observations, typically used within sensor webs, and employs Geography Markup Language (GML) to describe the spatial aspect of the problem domain. Thus the interpolation service is extremely flexible, being able to support a range of observation types, and can cope with issues such as change of support and differing error characteristics of sensors (by utilising descriptions of the observation process provided by SensorML). XML is accepted as the de facto standard for describing Web services, due to its expressive capabilities which allow automatic discovery and consumption by ‘naive’ users. Any XML schema employed must therefore be capable of describing every aspect of a service and its processes. However, no schema currently exists that can define the complex uncertainties and modelling choices that are often present within geostatistical analysis. We show a solution to this problem, developing a family of XML schemata to enable the description of a full range of uncertainty types. These types will range from simple statistics, such as the kriging mean and variances, through to a range of probability distributions and non-parametric models, such as realisations from a conditional simulation. By employing these schemata within a Web Processing Service (WPS) we show a prototype moving towards a truly interoperable geostatistical software architecture

    Interpretability of Gradual Semantics in Abstract Argumentation

For thispurpose, many semantics have been defined with, amongst them, grad-ual semantics aiming to assign an acceptability degree to each argument.Although the number of these semantics continues to increase, there iscurrently no method allowing to explain the results returned by thesesemantics. In this paper, we study the interpretability of these seman-tics by measuring, for each argument, the impact of the other argumentson its acceptability degree. We define a new property and show that thescore of an argument returned by a gradual semantics which satisfies thisproperty can also be computed by aggregating the impact of the otherarguments on it. This result allows to provide, for each argument in anargumentation framework, a ranking between arguments from the most to the least impacting ones w.r.t a given gradual semantic

    Gad65 is recognized by t-cells, but not by antibodies from nod-mice

    Since the 64kDa-protein glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) is one of the major autoantigens in T-cell mediated Type 1 diabetes, its relevance as a T-cell antigen needs to be clarified. After isolation of splenic T-cells from non-obese diabetic (NOD) mice, a useful model for human Type 1 diabetes, we found that these T-cells proliferate spontaneously when incubated with human GAD65, but only marginally after incubation with GAD67, both recombinated in the baculovirus system. No effect was observed with non-diabetic NOD mice or with T-cells from H-2 identical NON-NOD-H-2g7 control mice. It has been published previously that NOD mice develop autoantibodies against a 64kDa protein detected with mouse beta cells. In immunoprecipitation experiments with sera from the same NOD mice and 33S-methionine-labelled GAD, no autoantibody binding could be detected. We conclude firstly that GAD65 is an important T-cell antigen which is relevant early in the development of Type 1 diabetes and secondly that there is an antigenic epitope in the human GAD65 molecule recognized by NOD T-cells, but not by NOD autoantibodies precipitating conformational epitopes. Our results therefore provide further evidence that GAD65 is a T-cell antigen in NOD mice, being possibly also involved in very early processes leading to the development of human Type 1 diabetes

    Preprocessing Argumentation Frameworks via Replacement Patterns

    A fast-growing research direction in the study of formal argumentation is the development of practical systems for central reasoning problems underlying argumentation. In particular, numerous systems for abstract argumentation frameworks (AF solvers) are available today, covering several argumentation semantics and reasoning tasks. Instead of proposing another algorithmic approach for AF solving, we introduce in this paper distinct AF preprocessing techniques as a solver-independent approach to obtaining performance improvements of AF solvers. We establish a formal framework of replacement patterns to perform local simplifications that are faithful with respect to standard semantics for AFs. Moreover, we provide a collection of concrete replacement patterns. Towards potential applicability, we employ the patterns in a preliminary empirical evaluation of their influence on AF solver performance.Peer reviewe

    Metabolomics and microbial composition increase insight into the impact of dietary differences in cirrhosis.

    BACKGROUND & AIMS: Dietary changes can modulate gut microbiota and interact with cirrhosis. Our prior study demonstrated that microbial diversity was higher in Turkish versus USA cirrhotics, which was associated with lower risk of 90-day hospitalizations. We aimed to define gut microbial functional and metabolomic changes to increase insight into benefits of the Mediterranean compared to Western diets. METHODS: 139 Turkish (46 controls/50 compensated/43 decompensated) and 157 American subjects (48 controls/59 compensated/50 decompensated) were studied. Turkish subjects consumed a modified Mediterranean diet with daily fermented milk intake while Americans consumed a Western diet. Predicted gut microbial functionalities and plasma metabolomics were compared between/within countries. Correlation network differences between microbiota and metabolites in cirrhotics from Turkey versus USA were evaluated. RESULTS: Predicted microbial function showed lower amino acid, bioenergetics and lipid pathways, with functions related to vitamin B, glycan, xenobiotic metabolism, DNA/RNA synthesis, in Turkey compared to USA cirrhotics. Plasma metabolomics demonstrated higher relative lactate levels in Turkey versus USA. The metabolite changes in decompensated cirrhosis, compared to controls, showed similar trends in Turkey and USA, with reduced lipids and phosphocholines. Phosphocholines were significantly lower in patients hospitalized in 90 days (p=0.03). Correlation networks in cirrhotics demonstrated linkage differences between beneficial taxa, Blautia and Oscillispira, and lactate and unsaturated lipids, in Turkey compared to American patients. CONCLUSIONS: A modified Mediterranean diet was associated with altered plasma metabolomics and beneficially alters microbiota functionality and correlations compared to Western diet in cirrhosis.     A systematic review on the effectiveness of pharmacological interventions for chronic non-specific low-back pain

    The objective of this review was to determine the effectiveness of pharmacological interventions [i.e., non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), muscle relaxants, antidepressants, and opioids] for non-specific chronic low-back pain (LBP). Existing Cochrane reviews for the four interventions were screened for studies fulfilling the inclusion criteria. Then, the literature searches were updated. Only randomized controlled trials on adults (≥18 years) with chronic (≥12 weeks) non-specific LBP and evaluation of at least one of the main clinically relevant outcome measures (pain, functional status, perceived recovery, or return to work) were included. The GRADE approach was used to determine the quality of evidence. A total of 17 randomized controlled trials was included: NSAIDs (n = 4), antidepressants (n = 5), and opioids (n = 8). No studies were found for muscle relaxants; 14 studies had a low risk of bias. The studies only reported effects on the short term (<3 months). The overall quality of the evidence was low. NSAIDs and opioids seem to lead to a somewhat higher relief in pain on the short term, as compared to placebo, in patients with non-specific chronic low back pain; opioids seem to have a small effect in improving function for a selection of patients who responded with an exacerbation of their symptoms after stopping their medication. However, both types of medication show more adverse effects than placebo. There seems to be no difference in effect between antidepressants and placebo in patients with non-specific chronic LBP

    Goal-Driven Structured Argumentation for Patient Management in a Multimorbidity Setting

    We use computational argumentation to both analyse and generate solutions for reasoning in multimorbidity about consistent recommendations, according to different patient-centric goals. Reasoning in this setting carries a complexity related to the multiple variables involved. These variables reflect the co-existing health conditions that should be considered when defining a proper therapy. However, current Clinical Decision Support Systems (CDSSs) are not equipped to deal with such a situation. They do not go beyond the straightforward application of the rules that build their knowledge base and simple interpretation of Computer-Interpretable Guidelines (CIGs). We provide a computational argumentation system equipped with goal-seeking mechanisms to combine independently generated recommendations, with the ability to resolve conflicts and generate explanations for its results.     Managerial Work in a Practice-Embodying Institution - The role of calling, the virtue of constancy

    What can be learned from a small scale study of managerial work in a highly marginal and under-researched working community? This paper uses the ‘goods-virtues-practices-institutions’ framework to examine the managerial work of owner-directors of traditional circuses. Inspired by MacIntyre’s arguments for the necessity of a narrative understanding of the virtues, interviews explored how British and Irish circus directors accounted for their working lives. A purposive sample was used to select subjects who had owned and managed traditional touring circuses for at least 15 years, a period in which the economic and reputational fortunes of traditional circuses have suffered badly. This sample enabled the research to examine the self-understanding of people who had, at least on the face of it, exhibited the virtue of constancy. The research contributes to our understanding of the role of the virtues in organizations by presenting evidence of an intimate relationship between the virtue of constancy and a ‘calling’ work orientation. This enhances our understanding of the virtues that are required if management is exercised as a domain-related practice
