Beyond shareholder primacy? Reflections on the trajectory of UK corporate governance.
Core institutions of UK corporate governance, in particular the City Code on Takeovers and Mergers, the Combined Code on Corporate Governance and the law on directorsâ duties, are strongly orientated towards the norm of shareholder primacy. Beyond the core, however, stakeholder interests are better represented, in particular at the intersection of insolvency and employment law. This reflects the influence of European Community laws on information and consultation of employees. In addition, there are signs that some institutional shareholders are redirecting their investment strategies, under government encouragement, away from a focus on short-term returns, in such a way as to favour stakeholder-inclusive practices by firms. On this basis we suggest that the UK system is currently in a state of flux and that the debate over shareholder primacy has not been concluded
Influence of built structures on Tonle Sap fisheries : synthesis report
This document is a synthesis of the major findings and recommendation of a study on the influence of built structures on the fisheries of the Tonle Sap Lake. The multidisciplinary study analysed the influence and impact of built structures on hydrology, fish, and ultimately on people. The project established a database of major structures around the Tonle Sap Lake. Hydrologists modeled the influence of infrastructure on the flow and quality of water. Environmental scientists analysed information about how infrastructure affects the environment. Experts in ecology and fish biology assessed teh direct impacts on fisheries. Social scientists and economists evaluated the influence of infrastructure development on people's livelihoods, and studied local people's insights related to the planning, construction, and operation of built structures.Inland fisheries, Environmental impact, Structures, Man-induced effects, Cambodia, Tonle Sap L.,

Improving statistical skills through studentsâ participation in the development of resources
This paper summarizes the evaluation of a project that involved undergraduate mathematics students in the development of teaching and learning resources for statistics modules taught in various departments of a university. This evaluation regards studentsâ participation in the project and its impact on their learning of statistics, as characterized in terms of statistical reasoning, statistical thinking, and skills for statistical consultancy. The participation of students is evaluated from the viewpoint of communities of practice. The evaluation resulted in a characterization of the benefits of such a project and suggestions for implementations of future projects, and in addition brought to light new theoretical elements both as regards the learning of statistics and as regards communities of practice. In particular, the analysis highlighted contributions of the students involved to resource development practice in the community of university statistics teachers, as well as contributions to studentsâ learning as a result of participation in this community
The political phenomenology of war reporting
Drawing on interviews with war correspondents, editors, political and military personnel, this article investigates the political dimension of the structuration and structuring effects of the reporterâs experience of journalism. Self-reflection and judgements about colleagues confirm that there are dominant norms for interpreting and acting in conflict scenarios which, while contingent upon socio-historical context, are interpreted as natural. But the prevalence of such codes masks the systematically misrecognized symbolic systems of mystification and ambivalence â systems which reproduce hierarchies and gatekeeping structures in the field, but which are either experienced as unremarkable, dismissed with irony and cynicism, or not present to the consciousness of the war correspondent. The article builds on recent theories of journalistic disposition, ideology, discourse and professionalism, and describes the political dimension of journalistic practice perceived in the field as apolitical. It addresses the gendering of war correspondence, the rise of the journalist as moral authority, and questions the extent to which respondent reflections can be defensibly analytically determined
Prevalence of drooling, swallowing, and feeding problems in cerebral palsy across the lifespan: a systematic review and metaâanalyses
Aim: To determine the prevalence of drooling, swallowing, and feeding problems in persons with cerebral palsy (CP) across the lifespan. Method: A systematic review was conducted using five different databases (AMED, CINAHL, Embase, MEDLINE, and PubMed). The selection process was completed by two independent researchers and the methodological quality of included studies was assessed using the STROBE and AXIS guidelines. Meta-analyses were conducted to determine pooled prevalence estimates of drooling, swallowing, and feeding problems with stratified group analyses by type of assessment and Gross Motor Function Classification System level. Results: A total of 42 studies were included. Substantial variations in selected outcome measures and variables were observed, and data on adults were limited. Pooled prevalence estimates determined by meta-analyses were as high as 44.0% (95% confidence interval [CI] 35.6â52.7) for drooling, 50.4% (95% CI 36.0â64.8) for swallowing problems, and 53.5% (95% CI 40.7â65.9) for feeding problems. Group analyses for type of assessments were non-significant; however, more severely impaired functioning in CP was associated with concomitant problems of increased drooling, swallowing, and feeding. Interpretation: Drooling, swallowing, and feeding problems are very common in people with CP. Consequently, they experience increased risks of malnutrition and dehydration, aspiration pneumonia, and poor quality of life. What this paper adds: Drooling, swallowing, and feeding problems are very common in persons with cerebral palsy (CP). The prevalence of drooling, swallowing, and feeding problems is 44.0%, 50.4%, and 53.5% respectively. There are limited data on the prevalence of drooling, swallowing, and feeding problems in adults. Higher Gross Motor Function Classification System levels are associated with higher prevalence of drooling, swallowing, and feeding problems. There is increased risk for malnutrition, dehydration, aspiration pneumonia, and poor quality of life in CP
Medical Workforce Issues in Australia: Tomorrow's Doctors - Too Few, Too Far
The Australian medical workforce, like those of most developed countries, is increasingly feminised and exposed to the global market for doctors. Demand for healthcare services is increasing in the Australian community. Concern in relation to doctor shortages is increasing, particularly in rural areas. There should be greater flexibility for entry of highly-trained overseas doctors. There is an urgent need to increase medical school student intake. Issues of workforce practice, including task substitution, should be explored
Development of an Interpretive Simulation Tool for the Proton Radiography Technique
Proton radiography is a useful diagnostic of high energy density (HED)
plasmas under active theoretical and experimental development. In this paper we
describe a new simulation tool that interacts realistic laser-driven point-like
proton sources with three dimensional electromagnetic fields of arbitrary
strength and structure and synthesizes the associated high resolution proton
radiograph. The present tool's numerical approach captures all relevant physics
effects, including effects related to the formation of caustics.
Electromagnetic fields can be imported from PIC or hydrodynamic codes in a
streamlined fashion, and a library of electromagnetic field `primitives' is
also provided. This latter capability allows users to add a primitive, modify
the field strength, rotate a primitive, and so on, while quickly generating a
high resolution radiograph at each step. In this way, our tool enables the user
to deconstruct features in a radiograph and interpret them in connection to
specific underlying electromagnetic field elements. We show an example
application of the tool in connection to experimental observations of the
Weibel instability in counterstreaming plasmas, using particles
generated from a realistic laser-driven point-like proton source, imaging
fields which cover volumes of mm. Insights derived from this
application show that the tool can support understanding of HED plasmas.Comment: Figures and tables related to the Appendix are included in the

Two-Dimensional Stimulated Resonance Raman Spectroscopy of Molecules with Broadband X-ray Pulses
Expressions for the two-dimensional Stimulated x-ray Raman Spectroscopy
(2D-SXRS) signal obtained using attosecond x-ray pulses are derived. The 1D-
and 2D-SXRS signals are calculated for trans-N-methyl acetamide (NMA) with
broad bandwidth (FWHM ~14.2eV, 181 as) pulses tuned to the oxygen and nitrogen
K-edges. Crosspeaks in 2D signals reveal electronic Franck-Condon overlaps
between valence orbitals and relaxed orbitals in the presence of the core hole
