Web of Failure: The Relationship Between Foster Care and Homelessness

    Get PDF
The purpose of this project is to examine the connection between foster care and homelessness and to determine whether or not there is an over-representation of people with a foster care history in the homeless population. In order to examine this issue, the project used four sources of information: (1) existing research on the connection between foster care and homelessness; (2) data collected from organizations which serve homeless people and which gather information on their clients' foster care history; (3) data obtained directly from a sample of homeless people; and (4) case studies of people who are or were homeless and who have a foster care history

The X-ray line and continuum emission from a solar active region

The X-ray spectrum of the quiet sun in the energy range 2.3 - 6.9 keV was observed from an Aerobee rocket using an uncollimated graphite crystal spectrometer. These results and spatial measurements made with an onboard modulation collimator are analyzed using solar models

    Experimental Studies of NaCs

We present experimental studies of excited electronic states of the NaCs molecule that are currently underway in our laboratory. The optical-optical double resonance method is used to obtain Doppler-free excitation spectra for several excited states. These data are being used to obtain RydbergKlein-Rees (RKR) or Inverse Perturbation Approach (IPA) potential curves for these states. We are also trying to map the bound portion of the 1(a) 3Σ + potential using resolved laser-induced fluorescence and Fourier transform spectroscopy to record transitions into the shallow well. Bound-free spectra from single ro-vibrational levels of electronically excited states to the repulsive wall of the 1(a) 3Σ + state are also being recorded. Using the previously determined excited state potentials, we can fit the repulsive wall of the 1(a) 3Σ + state to reproduce the experimental spectra using LeRoy’s BCONT program. A slightly modified version of BCONT will also be used to fit the relative transition dipole moments, µe(R), as a function of internuclear separation R, for the various bound-free electronic transitions

A complete sample of 21-cm absorbers at z~1.3: Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope Survey Using MgII Systems

We present the results of a systematic Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) survey of 21-cm absorption in a representative and unbiased sample of 35 strong MgII systems in the redshift range: zabs~1.10-1.45, 33 of which have W_r>1 \AA. The survey using ~400hrs of telescope time has resulted in 9 new 21-cm detections and stringent 21-cm optical depth upper limits (median 3-sigma optical depth per 10 km/s of 0.017) for the remaining 26 systems. This is by far the largest number of 21-cm detections from any single survey of intervening absorbers. Prior to our survey no intervening 21-cm system was known in the above redshift range and only one system was known in the redshift range 0.7<z<1.5. We discuss the relation between the detectability of 21-cm absorption and various properties of UV absorption lines. We show that if MgII systems are selected with the following criteria, MgII doublet ratio <1.3 and W_r(MgI)/W_r(MgII)>0.3, then a detection rate of 21-cm absorption up to 90% can be achieved. We estimate n_{21}, the number per unit redshift of 21-cm absorbers with W_r(Mg(II)>W_o and integrated optical depth Tau_{21}>Tau_o and show that n_{21} decreases with increasing redshift. In particular, for W_o=1.0 \AA and Tau_o>0.3 km\s, n_{21} falls by a factor 4 from =0.5 to =1.3. The evolution seems to be stronger for stronger MgII systems. Using a subsample of systems for which high frequency VLBA images are available, we show that the effect is not related to the structure of the background radio sources and is most probably due to the evolution of the cold neutral medium filling factor in MgII systems. We find no correlation between the velocity spread of the 21-cm absorption feature and W_r(MgII) at z~1.3.Comment: 22 pages, 8 tables, 12 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA

Implementation of Skill-Based, Transdisciplinary Competencies and Their Influence on Teacher Practice

    Get PDF
Competency-based education has been a growing movement in K-12 education but faces several implementation challenges. In addition, discussion in the field is lacking related to the competency-based principle: learning outcomes emphasize the authentic application of knowledge. New to the competency-based field are proficiencies called competencies, which are skill-based, transdisciplinary proficiencies that are structured across a continuum of varying performance levels. This study employed a case study methodology utilizing teacher and educational leader interviews as well as artifacts to explore the implementation of competencies in a competency-based organization and two schools that partnered with it. This study specifically investigated how competencies are implemented at these schools, how competencies influence teacher practice, and implementation challenges. Major themes in the findings include a comprehensive description of: (1) competencies and their deliberate connection to authentic, agentic learning experiences, (2) a dynamic of push and pull between competencies, content, and project-based learning, (3) notable mindsets amongst teachers, (4) characteristics of classroom preparation and practices, (5) professional development, and (6) challenges. This study concludes with implications that address: (1) increasing teacher capacity for competency-based education, (2) developing structures to support authenticity and agency, (3) using competencies as proficiencies and as a tool for teaching, (4) the intersection to other educational fields including social & emotional learning, project-based learning, and service learning, (5) potential solutions to identified challenges, and (6) system-wide structures that may better support competency-based education at scale
