Constructive updating/downdating of oblique projectors: a generalization of the Gram-Schmidt process
A generalization of the Gram-Schmidt procedure is achieved by providing
equations for updating and downdating oblique projectors. The work is motivated
by the problem of adaptive signal representation outside the orthogonal basis
setting. The proposed techniques are shown to be relevant to the problem of
discriminating signals produced by different phenomena when the order of the

Las reglas condicionan el desarrollo del juego en cualquier deporte ya que
delimita lo que se puede hacer. Se pretende conocer el orden de importancia de
las reglas en minibasket, así como los medios técnico-tácticos que se derivan
éstas. El método utilizado para la toma de datos ha sido el grupo nominal. Los
participantes han sido siete expertos que cumplían unas condiciones mínimas.
Con relación a la primera pregunta, el orden de importancia de las reglas ha sido:
los pasos, dobles, líneas delimitadoras, faltas, árbitro, reglas de tiempo y
puntuación. Con relación a los medios técnico-tácticos que se derivan de las
reglas más importantes, a modo de ejemplo, a través de los pasos se aprende el

determine the order of importance of the basic basketball rules as well as the
technical and tactical contents deriving from these rules. The method used for
the data collection was that of the nominal group technique. The nominal group
consisted of seven experts who fulfilled the minimum conditions. Regarding the
first question, the order of importance of the rules was: steps, double dribble,
lines, fouls, referee, rules regarding time limits and score. With regard to the
technical and tactical contents deriving from the most important rules, for
example, through the steps’ rules, players can learn starts, stops, lay-up, etc.

Mixing and transport of water in a karst catchment: a case study from precipitation via seepage to the spring
One of the best-known and largest karst areas in Germany, the Blautopf Catchment, offers unique access to waters of the unsaturated zone through a large cave system. It was investigated with stable isotopes (<sup>18</sup>O/<sup>16</sup>O and D/H ratios expressed in permille = &permil;) in precipitation, seepage- and groundwater as tracers for water flow, mixing, and storage. The precipitation showed a distinct seasonality with &delta;<sup>18</sup>O values between &minus;2.9 and &minus;24.6&permil; during summer and winter, respectively. However, the isotope signals in seepage water in the caves as well as the discharge were almost completely buffered and ranged around an average &delta;<sup>18</sup>O value of &minus;10&permil;. This value was also close to the long-term average value of local precipitation, &minus;9.3&permil;. The homogeneous isotopic composition of the Blautopf Spring was unexpected, as its highly variable discharge (0.3 to 32 m<sup>3</sup> s<sup>&minus;1</sup>) is typical for a fast responsive karst system. These isotopic similarities could be explained by nearly complete mixing of the water already in the vadose zone. The data set therefore presents a case study to narrow down zones of mixing in karst catchments. It also confirms the minor role of the fast conduit system in the water balance of the Blautopf Catchment
On the Complexity of -Closeness Anonymization and Related Problems
An important issue in releasing individual data is to protect the sensitive
information from being leaked and maliciously utilized. Famous privacy
preserving principles that aim to ensure both data privacy and data integrity,
such as -anonymity and -diversity, have been extensively studied both
theoretically and empirically. Nonetheless, these widely-adopted principles are
still insufficient to prevent attribute disclosure if the attacker has partial
knowledge about the overall sensitive data distribution. The -closeness
principle has been proposed to fix this, which also has the benefit of
supporting numerical sensitive attributes. However, in contrast to
-anonymity and -diversity, the theoretical aspect of -closeness has
not been well investigated.
We initiate the first systematic theoretical study on the -closeness
principle under the commonly-used attribute suppression model. We prove that
for every constant such that , it is NP-hard to find an optimal
-closeness generalization of a given table. The proof consists of several
reductions each of which works for different values of , which together
cover the full range. To complement this negative result, we also provide exact
and fixed-parameter algorithms. Finally, we answer some open questions
regarding the complexity of -anonymity and -diversity left in the

Shrinking the lymphatic filariasis map of Ethiopia: reassessing the population at risk through nationwide mapping
BACKGROUND
Mapping of lymphatic filariasis (LF) is essential for the delineation of endemic implementation units and determining the population at risk that will be targeted for mass drug administration (MDA). Prior to the current study, only 116 of the 832 woredas (districts) in Ethiopia had been mapped for LF. The aim of this study was to perform a nationwide mapping exercise to determine the number of people that should be targeted for MDA in 2016 when national coverage was anticipated.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDING
A two-stage cluster purposive sampling was used to conduct a community-based cross-sectional survey for an integrated mapping of LF and podoconiosis, in seven regional states and two city administrations. Two communities in each woreda were purposely selected using the World Health Organization (WHO) mapping strategy for LF based on sampling 100 individuals per community and two purposely selected communities per woreda. Overall, 130 166 people were examined in 1315 communities in 658 woredas. In total, 140 people were found to be positive for circulating LF antigen by immunochromatographic card test (ICT) in 89 communities. Based on WHO guidelines, 75 of the 658 woredas surveyed in the nine regions were found to be endemic for LF with a 2016 projected population of 9 267 410 residing in areas of active disease transmission. Combining these results with other data it is estimated that 11 580 010 people in 112 woredas will be exposed to infection in 2016.
CONCLUSIONS
We have conducted nationwide mapping of LF in Ethiopia and demonstrated that the number of people living in LF endemic areas is 60% lower than current estimates. We also showed that integrated mapping of multiple NTDs is feasible and cost effective and if properly planned, can be quickly achieved at national scale
Validation Study of the Use of Matlab/Simulink Synchronous-Machine Block for Accurate Power-Plant Stability Studies
This paper presents results of the validity study of the use of MATLAB/Simulink synchronous-machine block for power-system stability studies. Firstly, the waveforms of the theoretical synchronous-generator short-circuit currents are described. Thereafter, the comparison between the currents obtained through the simulation model in the sudden short-circuit test, are compared to the theoretical ones. Finally, the factory tests of two commercial generating units are compared to the response of the synchronous generator simulation block during sudden short-circuit, set with the same real data, with satisfactory results. This results show the validity of the use of this generator block for power plant simulation
Stabilized Schemes for the Hydrostatic Stokes Equations
Some new stable finite element (FE) schemes are presented for the hydrostatic Stokes
system or primitive equations of the ocean. It is known that the stability of the mixed formulation ap-
proximation for primitive equations requires the well-known Ladyzhenskaya–Babuˇska–Brezzi condi-
tion related to the Stokes problem and an extra inf-sup condition relating the pressure and the vertical
velocity.
The main goal of this paper is to avoid this extra condition by adding a residual stabilizing term to the
vertical momentum equation. Then, the stability for Stokes-stable FE combinations is extended to
the primitive equations and some error estimates are provided using Taylor–Hood P2 –P1 or miniele-
ment (P1 +bubble)–P1 FE approximations, showing the optimal convergence rate in the P2 –P1 case.
These results are also extended to the anisotropic (nonhydrostatic) problem. On the other hand,
by adding another residual term to the continuity equation, a better approximation of the vertical
derivative of pressure is obtained. In this case, stability and error estimates including this better
approximation are deduced, where optimal convergence rate is deduced in the (P 1 +bubble)–P1 case.

The impact of residual infections on Anopheles-transmitted Wuchereria bancrofti after multiple rounds of mass drug administration
Background
Many countries have made significant progress in the implementation of World Health Organization recommended preventive chemotherapy strategy, to eliminate lymphatic filariasis (LF). However, pertinent challenges such as the existence of areas of residual infections in disease endemic districts pose potential threats to the achievements made. Thus, this study was undertaken to assess the importance of these areas in implementation units (districts) where microfilaria (MF) positive individuals could not be found during the mid-term assessment after three rounds of mass drug administration.
Methods
This study was undertaken in Bo and Pujehun, two LF endemic districts of Sierra Leone, with baseline MF prevalence of 2 % and 0 % respectively in sentinel sites for monitoring impact of the national programme. Study communities in the districts were purposefully selected and an assessment of LF infection prevalence was conducted together with entomological investigations undertaken to determine the existence of areas with residual MF that could enable transmission by local vectors. The transmission Assessment Survey (TAS) protocol described by WHO was applied in the two districts to determine infection of LF in 6–7 year old children who were born before MDA against LF started.
Results
The results indicated the presence of MF infected children in Pujehun district. An. gambiae collected in the district were also positive for W. bancrofti, even though the prevalence of infection was below the threshold associated with active transmission.
Conclusions
Residual infection was detected after three rounds of MDA in Pujehun – a district of 0 % Mf prevalence at the sentinel site. Nevertheless, our results showed that the transmission was contained in a small area. With the scale up of vector control in Anopheles transmission zones, some areas of residual infection may not pose a serious threat for the resurgence of LF if the prevalence of infections observed during TAS are below the threshold required for active transmission of the parasite. However, robust surveillance strategies capable of detecting residual infections must be implemented, together with entomological assessments to determine if ongoing vector control activities, biting rates and infection rates of the vectors can support the transmission of the disease. Furthermore, in areas where mid-term assessments reveal MF prevalence below 1 % or 2 % antigen level, in Anopheles transmission areas with active and effective malaria vector control efforts, the minimum 5 rounds of MDA may not be required before implementing TAS. Thus, we propose a modification of the WHO recommendation for the timing of sentinel and spot-check site assessments in national programs
