Constructive Aerodynamic Interference in a Network of Weakly Coupled Flutter-Based Energy Harvesters
Converting flow-induced vibrations into electricity for low-power generation has received growing attention over the past few years. Aeroelastic phenomena, good candidates to yield high energy performance in renewable wind energy harvesting (EH) systems, can play a pivotal role in providing sufficient power for extended operation with little or no battery replacement. In this paper, a numerical model and a co-simulation approach have been developed to study a new EH device for power generation. We investigate the problem focusing on a weakly aerodynamically coupled flutter-based EH system. It consists of two flexible wings anchored by cantilevered beams with attached piezoelectric layers, undergoing nonlinear coupled bending–torsion limit cycle oscillations. Besides the development of individual EH devices, further issues are posed when considering multiple objects for realizing a network of devices and magnifying the extracted power due to nonlinear synergies and constructive interferences. This work investigates the effect of various external conditions and physical parameters on the performance of the piezoaeroelastic array of devices. From the viewpoint of applications, we are most concerned about whether an EH can generate sufficient power under a variable excitation. The results of this study can be used for the design and integration of low-energy wind generation technologies into buildings, bridges, and built-in sensor networks in aircraft structures.Fil: Beltramo, Emmanuel. Barriers to teaching communication skills in Spanish medical schools: a qualitative study with academic leaders.
Background: In recent years, Spanish medical schools (MSs) have incorporated training in communication skills
(CS), but how this training is being carried out has not yet been evaluated.
Objective: To identify the barriers to the introduction and development of CS teaching in Spanish MSs.
Methods: In a previous study, 34 MSs (83% of all MSs in Spain) were invited to participate in a study that explored
the factual aspects of teaching CS in these schools. The person responsible for teaching CS at each school was
contacted again for this study and asked to respond to a single open-ended question. Two researchers independently
conducted a thematic analysis of the responses.
Results: We received responses from 30 MSs (85.7% of those contacted and 73% of all MSs in Spain). Five main
thematic areas were identified, each with different sub-areas: negative attitudes of teachers and academic leaders;
organisation, structure and presence of CS training in the curriculum; negative attitudes of students; a lack of trained
teachers; and problems linked to teaching methods and necessary educational logistics.
Conclusions: The identified barriers and problems indicate that there are areas for improvement in teaching CS in
most Spanish MSs. There seems to be a vicious circle based on the dynamic relationship and interdependence of all
these problems that should be faced with different strategies and that requires a significant cultural shift as well as
decisive institutional support at the local and national levels. The incorporation of CS training into MS curricula
represents a major challenge that must be addressed for students to learn CS more effectively and avoid negative
attitudes towards learning CS.post-print853 K
Sono-enzymatically embedded antibacterial silver-lignin nanoparticles on cork filter material for water disinfection
Providing clean drinking water is a great challenge worldwide, especially for low-income countries where the access to safe water is limited. During the last decade, new biotechnological approaches have been explored to improve water management. Among them, the use of antimicrobial nanoparticles for designing innovative centralized and decentralized (point-of-use) water treatment systems for microbial decontamination has received considerable attention. Herein, antimicrobial lignin capped silver nanoparticles (AgLNP) were embedded on residual cork pieces using high-intensity ultrasound coupled with laccase-mediated grafting to obtain biofunctionalized nanomaterial. The developed AgLNP-coated cork proved to be highly efficient to drastically reduce the number of viable Gram-negative Escherichia coli and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus in liquid medium. Additionally, the coated-cork was characterized using FTIR-ATR spectroscopy and SEM imaging, and further used as a filter bed in a point-of-use device for water disinfection. The constructed water filtering system significantly reduced the amount of viable E. coli and resistant Bacillus cereus spores from filtered water operating at increasing residence times of 1, 4, 6, 16, 24, and 48 h. Therefore, the presented results prove that the obtained cork-based antimicrobial nanocomposite material could be used as a filtering medium for the development of water filtration system to control pathogen dissemination.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

Muscle Activation and Distribution during Four Test/Functional Tasks: A Comparison between Dry-Land and Aquatic Environments for Healthy Older and Young Adults
Background: The use of rehabilitation protocols carried out in water has been progressively increasing due to the favorable physical properties of the water. Electromyography allows one to register muscle activity even under water. Aim: To compare muscle activity between two groups (healthy young adults (HYA) and healthy older adults (HOA)) in two different environments (dry land and aquatic) using surface electromyography during the execution of four different test/functional movements. Methods: Analytical cross-sectional study. HYA and HOA carried out four functional tasks (Step Up and Down, Sit TO Stand test, Gait Initiation and Turns During Gait) in two different environments (dry land and aquatic). Absolute and relative muscle activation was compared between each group and between each environment. In addition, the stability of the measured was calculated through a test-retest (ICC 2:1). Results: Within the same environment there were significant differences between young and older adults in three of the four functional tasks. In contrast, in the gait initiation, hardly any significant differences were found between the two groups analysed, except for the soleus and the anterior tibial. Measurement stability ranged from good to excellent. Conclusions: Level of the musculature involvement presents an entirely different distribution when the test/functional task is performed on dry land or in water. There are differences both in the relative activation of the musculature and in the distribution of the partition of the muscles comparing older and young adults within the same environment
La arqueometría de materiales cerámicos: una evaluación de la experiencia andaluza
This paper assesses the impact that the introduction of scientific methods for materials characterisation (conventionally grouped under the label of Archaeometry) has had in the methodological configuration of Spanish archaeology over the last two decades. This is achieved through a bibliometric study of publications dealing with characterisation of archaeological ceramics from Andalucía (southern Spain). The variables handled in this study include aspects such as the number of sampled sites and items, their geographical provenance, the chronological and functional dimensions of the archaeological contexts they were taken from as well as the analytical techniques employed in their study.Este artículo intenta valorar el impacto que la introducción de métodos de caracterización de materiales procedentes de la física y la química (y agrupados habitualmente bajo la denominación genérica de Arqueometría) ha tenido en la configuración metodológica de la investigación arqueológica de nuestro país durante las últimas dos décadas. Para ello se realiza un análisis bibliométrico de un ámbito específico de la aplicación de las técnicas arqueométricas, cual es el de la caracterización de materiales cerámicos dentro de la Arqueología andaluza. Las variables tenidas en cuenta incluyen aspectos tales como la cantidad de sitios arqueológicos muestreados y de muestras analizadas, su procedencia geográfica, los contextos cronológicos y funcionales de los que las muestras fueron tomadas y las técnicas analíticas empleadas

Medical students’ attitudes towards communication skills training: a longitudinal study with one cohort.
Objectives: To explore medical students’ attitudes towards communication skills and the evolution of these attitudes from their first to fourth academic years.
Methods: A cohort of 91 medical students completed the Communication Skills Attitudes Scale (CSAS) at the beginning of their medical studies and at the end of their fourth year after having engaged in a training program in communication skills with experiential characteristics (individual encounters with simulated patients, observations in small groups, feedback, and practice). We analyzed students’ positive and negative global attitudes and their affective, cognitive, and respect dimensions towards learning communication skills.
Results: Medical students’ attitudes toward communication skills declined from their first (52.8) to fourth year (49.6) (p=.011). Along with this significant decrease in positive attitudes, a significant increase in negative attitudes toward communication skills was also observed in trained students (32.2 vs. 34.2; p=.023). The decline in students’ attitudes mainly involves a decline in their affective (51.4 vs. 47.3, p=.001) but not cognitive (18.3) attitudes. Female students have more positive attitudes towards communication skills than male students.
Conclusions: The decline in students’ attitudes, mainly in the affective dimension, could be related to their accumulated learning experiences during the learning process and particularly their experiential training in communication skills. Nevertheless, the importance students give to communication skills in the cognitive dimension remains unchanged. Students’ gender also seems to influence their attitudes. Further research is needed to assess the role of other factors involved in this decrease in positive and affective attitudes.post-print610 K
